Set a Satisfactory dedicated server’s administrator password in the in-game Server Manager while you claim the server. From the main menu, add the server, name it, and enter an administrator password. That password controls privileged actions such as loading saves, changing server options, and creating games.

A separate player password is optional and disabled by default. You enable it from the Server Settings tab. If you forget the administrator password, there is no in-game recovery form: the documented reset is to remove the server’s ServerSettings.PORT.sav file, then claim the server again.

Satisfactory dedicated servers use two distinct credentials. Confusing them is the most common reason a password appears not to work.

The Official Satisfactory Wiki’s dedicated-server documentation describes claiming as a prerequisite for starting a game. Once claimed, the server owner can create a new game or import an existing save from Server Manager.

What you need before setting the password
- Access to the Satisfactory client’s main menu and its Server Manager.
- The server address and port if you are adding a server hosted on another machine or by a hosting provider.
- Permission to edit the server if it is managed by a host or container. File locations and restart controls vary by provider.
- A password you can store securely. The administrator password is the key to privileged server actions, so do not post it in a public chat or share it with every player.
The exact interface can change between game builds. The labels below reflect the documented Server Manager flow; if a later patch moves a control, look for the same names—Authenticate, Server Settings, Admin Password, and Player password protection.
Set the administrator password on a new server
This is the normal way to set a password for a server that has not yet been claimed.

- Open Server Manager. Start Satisfactory and choose Server Manager from the main menu.
- Add the server. Use the add-server option and enter the server connection details requested by the manager. For a local installation, these are the details for your dedicated-server instance; for a hosted instance, use the address and port supplied by the host.
- Give the server a name. Enter a recognizable name. This is the name shown in Server Manager and is separate from the save or session name.
- Enter an administrator password. Fill in the administrator-password field and confirm it. Completing this step claims the server for administration.
- Start or create the game. After the claim succeeds, Server Manager lets you create a new game or import an existing game. A server must be claimed before it can start a game, according to the Official Satisfactory Wiki.
- Record the credential safely. Store the administrator password in a password manager or another private location. You will need it whenever Server Manager asks you to authenticate.
Claiming is not the same as requiring a password from ordinary players. Claiming establishes who can administer the server; the optional player-password setting determines whether joining players must supply a password.
Enable an optional password for players
Player-password protection is not enabled by default. You can leave it off for a private network where access is already controlled, or enable it when anyone who can reach the server should still need a shared join password.

- Open Server Manager and select the claimed server.
- Open the Server Settings tab.
- Find Player password protection.
- Click Change Password next to that setting.
- Enter the player password and confirm it. Apply or save the setting if the interface presents a separate confirmation control.
The player password is separate from the administrator password. Give regular players only the player credential; anyone who knows the administrator password can perform the privileged actions listed in the server’s administration settings.
When to use a player password
- Use one when the server is reachable by people outside your intended group and you want an additional join check.
- Leave it disabled when another access control already limits connections and you do not want players to type a shared password.
- Change it independently when a former player should lose join access but administrators must retain control. Changing the player password does not replace the administrator-password change procedure.
Change an existing administrator password
You cannot change the administrator password anonymously. First authenticate with the current password; this prevents a player who can see the server from taking ownership of its administration settings.

- Open Server Manager and select the server.
- Click Authenticate.
- Enter the current administrator password and confirm.
- Open the Server Settings tab.
- Locate Admin Password and press Change Password.
- Enter the new administrator password and confirm the change.
After the change, anyone who administers the server must use the new password when authenticating. Some hosting instructions also call for a server restart after changing the credential so that the new value is loaded; follow your host’s restart procedure if the panel does not apply the change immediately. If the old password is rejected
- Check that you are using the administrator password, not the player password.
- Check for a typing or paste error, including an accidental leading or trailing space.
- Confirm that Server Manager is connected to the intended server and port; changing the password on one instance does not authenticate you to another.
- Do not keep guessing if the password may have been changed by another administrator. Use the reset procedure below only after backing up the server settings file.
Reset a forgotten administrator password
Satisfactory does not provide an in-game “forgot password” reset. The documented recovery method is to delete the server-settings save file whose name contains the server port, such as ServerSettings.7777.sav. The Official Satisfactory Wiki lists this as the way to make the server claimable again.

Back up before deleting anything
The file location depends on how the dedicated server was installed and whether it runs in a hosting container. Host documentation may show a different path from a self-hosted installation. Stop the server first if your control panel provides a stop command, locate the file, and copy it to a safe backup location. The file contains more than the password, so a backup gives you a way to restore the previous settings if you identify the wrong instance.
The XGamingServer guide, Satisfactory Admin Password: Claim & Reset, also warns that the path varies by installation or container and recommends locating and backing up the file before removal.

- Stop the dedicated server through its normal service or hosting-panel control, if available.
- Locate the settings file. Find the file named
ServerSettings.PORT.sav, replacingPORTwith the server’s port number. An example isServerSettings.7777.sav. - Back it up. Copy the file outside the server’s active configuration directory and retain the copy until the server is working again.
- Delete the active file. Remove the
ServerSettings.PORT.savfile from the active server installation. Do not delete save-game files unless you have a separate, deliberate backup and recovery plan; the password reset targets the server-settings file. - Start or restart the server. With the settings file gone, Server Manager should present the server as available to claim again.
- Claim the server again. In Server Manager, add or select the server, enter a server name, and set a new administrator password.
- Reapply optional settings. Enable the player password again if you use one, and restore any other server settings that were cleared.
What the reset removes
Deleting the settings file is a broad reset, not a password-only operation. The Official Satisfactory Wiki says it also resets the server name, player password, auto-load session name, and certificate. Plan for those values to be recreated after the new claim. Your existing game save is not the target of this procedure, but keep normal save backups before changing server files.

- In Server Manager, authenticate with the new administrator password. If authentication succeeds, open Server Settings and confirm that the administrator-password control is available.
- Attempt an administrator action, such as loading a save or changing a harmless server option. Those actions are gated by the administrator credential.
- From a non-administrator account, test joining with the player password if protection is enabled. Test once with an incorrect password to confirm that the join requirement is actually active.
- Confirm that the server name and auto-load session name are correct after a reset, because those values are cleared along with the settings file.
- If the password change is not visible after a hosted-panel operation, perform the provider’s restart step and reconnect to the same address and port.
Common problems and the correct fix
“The server will not start a game.”
A new dedicated server must be claimed before it can start a game. Return to Server Manager, add the server, set its name and administrator password, and complete the claim. After that, create a new game or import an existing one from the same manager.
“Players can join without a password.”
That is expected when player-password protection is off, because it is disabled by default. Open Server Settings and use Change Password next to Player password protection. Make sure you are editing the intended server instance.
“My player password does not let me change settings.”
Player and administrator credentials have different purposes. Authenticate in Server Manager with the administrator password before opening administrator settings. A player password is for joining, not for claiming or managing the server.
“I changed the password, but another administrator still cannot connect.”
The old credential no longer authenticates after a successful change. Give current administrators the new password through a private channel, then have them select the server and use Authenticate again. If a hosted instance still uses the old value, restart it according to the host’s instructions.
“I cannot find ServerSettings.PORT.sav.”
Do not assume that a path from a different installation applies to yours. The file location differs between self-hosted installs and hosting containers. Use the host’s file manager or documentation, search for the exact ServerSettings. filename pattern, and verify the port before deleting anything. If you cannot identify the active file, stop and ask the host rather than removing unrelated configuration or save files.
“The reset worked, but my server looks newly configured.”
That is the expected result of deleting the settings file. Claim it again, choose the server name and administrator password, restore the player password, and re-enter the auto-load session name or other cleared settings.
Safe password administration
- Use a different administrator password from the player password. Sharing one credential for both roles makes it impossible to limit administrative access.
- Store the administrator password in a password manager or another protected location instead of a public chat, stream overlay, or shared screenshot.
- Give the player password only to people who should be able to join. Change it when that group changes.
- Keep a backup of
ServerSettings.PORT.savbefore editing or deleting it. Remember that the backup may contain the current player-password setting and certificate-related configuration. - Document the server address, port, owner, and the date of the last password change for the people responsible for administration. This avoids resetting a server simply because nobody knows which instance is active.
- After a password change or reset, test both an administrator login and an ordinary player join before treating the server as ready.
Version and hosting notes
The password workflow is documented for Satisfactory dedicated servers, but interface placement can change with a game update. The available material does not verify every label against a specific 2026 game build, so use the current labels in your client as the authority if they differ slightly.
Self-hosted servers and managed hosts also differ in how you stop, start, and browse files. The claim and password concepts remain the same: administrator password during claiming, optional player password in Server Settings, current-password authentication for changes, and the ServerSettings.PORT.sav deletion method for a forgotten administrator password. Host guides should be treated as instructions for their own control panels, especially where they describe file paths or mandatory restarts.
