To set up a custom greeting on your iPhone, open the Phone app, open the voicemail greeting controls for your Phone layout, choose Custom, record your message, and save or confirm it when prompted. iPhones currently use two Phone app layouts, so the route to the greeting screen may differ.
Use the path that matches the tabs and buttons visible on your screen. The finished greeting is the message callers hear when your carrier’s voicemail answers; it is separate from Live Voicemail’s on-screen transcription.

Before you change the greeting
Your iPhone provides the menu for choosing and recording a greeting, but voicemail is ultimately a carrier-provided service. Apple notes that voicemail, Visual Voicemail, and Live Voicemail are available only through select carriers and in select countries or regions. The exact features shown on your phone can therefore depend on your mobile account and location.

- Voicemail: the service that answers when you do not answer a call.
- Visual Voicemail: a Phone app view that lets supported users see and manage messages without dialing through a voice menu.
- Live Voicemail: a separate feature that can show a transcription while a caller is leaving a message.
A custom greeting changes the message played by voicemail when it answers. It does not change the Live Voicemail transcription feature or the wording displayed during a live call.

Find the voicemail greeting controls
Check the buttons at the bottom or top of the Phone app and use the matching route below. Apple’s iPhone User Guide documents both layouts.

Neither route requires a separate recording app, microphone accessory, or replacement product. The Phone app handles the workflow when your voicemail service supports it.
Use the unified Phone app layout
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap Filter.
- Tap Voicemails to show voicemail controls.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Edit Voicemail Greeting.
If those labels appear, you are in the unified layout. Continue with the recording steps in the next section.

Use the classic Phone app layout
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap Voicemail.
- Tap Greeting.
The classic layout goes directly from the Voicemail tab to the Greeting control. Continue with the same recording steps after the greeting screen opens.
Record and save your custom greeting
- On the greeting screen, select Custom instead of Default.
- Tap the control to begin recording. Speak your complete message after the recording indicator starts.
- Stop the recording when you have finished.
- Play the recording back if a preview control is shown. Check that your words are clear and that the message ends where you expect.
- Tap Save, Done, or the confirmation control shown by your iPhone. Apple’s wording is that you choose a greeting—Default or Custom—and, if you choose Custom, record a new greeting.
The exact confirmation button can vary with the iOS interface and carrier implementation. Do not leave the screen until the phone indicates that the greeting has been saved or returns you to the greeting choices.
Prepare a message that works for callers
A useful greeting tells the caller who they reached, says that you cannot answer, and gives a clear next step. For example:

Say the message at a normal speaking volume and in a quiet place. Avoid including information that will quickly become outdated, such as a temporary meeting location or a short-term return date. If your availability changes, return to the same greeting screen and record a replacement.
Check that callers hear the new greeting
After saving, place a test call to your number from another phone, or ask someone you trust to call while you do not answer. Let the call proceed to voicemail and listen for the greeting. This confirms both that the recording was saved and that the call is reaching the voicemail service associated with the line.

If the test call still plays the old message, reopen the greeting controls and check whether Custom is selected. If the custom recording is selected but callers continue to hear a different message, the carrier’s voicemail system may not have accepted the change; contact the carrier for account-specific assistance.

Custom is not listed
Apple states that recording a custom greeting is not supported by all carriers or in all countries and regions. When the greeting screen contains only Default, or does not offer a recording control, the limitation may be tied to your carrier account or regional service rather than to the iPhone’s microphone or storage.
Contact your carrier and ask whether your line supports recording a custom voicemail greeting. The carrier can check activation and account settings; Apple’s instructions do not provide carrier-by-carrier menus.
The Voicemail or Greeting control is absent
First compare the screen with both navigation paths above. A phone showing Filter uses the unified route, while a phone showing Voicemail as its direct tab uses the classic route. Looking for Greeting in the wrong layout can make the option appear to be missing.
If neither layout provides voicemail controls, voicemail may not be activated for the line, or the feature may not be available through the current carrier or region. Ask the carrier to confirm that voicemail is enabled and that the account is provisioned for the iPhone.
The recording will not start or will not save
- Return to the greeting screen and verify that Custom is selected before attempting to record.
- Follow the on-screen start and stop controls rather than beginning to speak before recording has started.
- Remain on the greeting screen until you have used the available save or confirmation control.
- If the control is present but every recording attempt fails, report the exact behavior to your carrier, since voicemail recording is handled through the carrier’s service.
The greeting sounds wrong on the test call
Record it again in a quiet environment, keep the phone at a consistent distance from your mouth, and play the preview before saving. If the preview is clear but the test call is not, tell the carrier that the saved greeting is not being delivered correctly.

Switching back is reversible: select Default on the same greeting screen. Selecting Default does not erase the fact that Custom was previously available; it simply makes the standard greeting active.
Keep Live Voicemail separate from the greeting
Live Voicemail and the voicemail greeting solve different problems. The greeting is an audio message played after the call is sent to voicemail. Live Voicemail is a separate calling feature that can display a transcription while the caller is leaving a message. Changing one does not constitute changing the other.
If you can see Live Voicemail activity but cannot find a greeting editor, follow the Phone layout paths above. If the editor still lacks Custom, the carrier or regional support limitation applies to custom greeting recording, even if another voicemail-related feature is visible.
