To use your own domain with a live stream, first decide whether it should give viewers a branded page or serve as a custom ingest address for your encoder. Those are different jobs. Add the hostname in the streaming platform, copy the DNS records it provides, complete any verification and HTTPS setup, and test the intended viewer or encoder path only after the platform confirms it is ready. Never reuse another provider’s DNS target.
First decide what the custom domain is for
A custom domain is a hostname you control, such as live.example.com. It does not, by itself, create a page or carry video. The streaming platform must support the role you want that hostname to fill.

Viewer-facing page or playback address
A viewer-facing hostname sends people to a hosted live page or video player. For example, OneStream Live documents custom domains for hosted live pages. A custom playback or delivery domain may instead be used to serve video from a platform or CDN; api.video documents custom domains for live streams and video delivery. Confirm which destination the service supports before choosing the hostname.

An ingest hostname is the destination your encoder sends video to. It is not a branded page for viewers. Cloudflare Stream documents custom RTMPS ingest domains; its live-stream ingestion also supports secure RTMPS and SRT. A custom ingest domain works only when the streaming provider supports and configures it. Pointing an arbitrary hostname at a streaming service does not create a valid ingest endpoint.

It is often clearer to use separate names, such as watch.example.com for viewers and ingest.example.com for an encoder, if your provider supports both uses.
What you need before you start
- A domain you control and access to its DNS management panel.
- A streaming platform that supports the type of custom domain you need.
- The exact hostname and DNS instructions supplied by that platform.
- Access to the platform dashboard or support process to add and verify the hostname.
DNS panels differ: a record’s “Name” field may accept a full hostname or only its subdomain label. Vimeo OTT, for example, describes setting a custom primary domain or subdomain and gives GoDaddy, Namecheap, and DNSimple as domain-registration examples. Do not assume every registrar uses the same fields or labels.

Set up the hostname in the right order
- Choose the hostname and confirm its role. Decide whether it is for viewers, playback delivery, or encoder ingest. Check the platform’s documentation or dashboard for support for that exact use.
- Add the hostname in the streaming platform first. Use its dashboard or support process to register the name. The platform may provide a CNAME target, a TXT ownership record, certificate steps, or a combination. api.video’s custom-domain documentation, for example, lists DNS updates, domain provision, and TLS certificates among the requirements.
- Copy the platform’s DNS instructions exactly. In your DNS panel, create only the records requested, with the record type, name, and target supplied by the provider. If it asks for ownership verification, add that record too. Do not delete existing records or redirect an apex domain (such as
example.com) until you understand what currently relies on it. - Apply the provider’s proxy guidance. Some services require a DNS-only record rather than traffic passing through a proxy. Follow the platform’s instructions for the specific hostname and feature.
- Complete verification and wait for HTTPS readiness. DNS routing, ownership proof, and certificate provisioning can be separate steps. Wait for the streaming service to report the hostname ready and its secure connection active before sharing it or changing an encoder destination.
- Test the path you configured. For a viewer hostname, open the exact URL over HTTPS and confirm it reaches the intended page or player. For ingest, use the secure endpoint supplied by the platform and change the encoder’s server or URL only when the dashboard shows the custom hostname configured; then confirm the stream reaches the intended destination.
Provider-specific DNS examples
The following values apply only to the named services and features. They are not general-purpose live-stream DNS targets.
Cloudflare Stream custom ingest
Cloudflare’s developer instructions, updated April 21, 2026, say to add a CNAME pointing to live.cloudflare.com for a custom ingest domain. If Cloudflare provides the DNS, it adds the record automatically. For a Cloudflare-managed ingest hostname, the instructions require DNS-only mode (grey-clouded), rather than proxying the record. Follow the current platform instructions for the hostname and account you are configuring: Cloudflare Stream: Add custom ingest domains.

OneStream Live hosted page
OneStream Live’s help article, updated March 5, 2025, says to create a CNAME targeting hostedpage.onestream.live, disable proxying if the DNS provider offers that setting, and verify the subdomain in OneStream. Its guidance notes that a DNS name field may accept either the full subdomain or just its leading label, depending on the registrar: OneStream Live: How to Verify Your Custom Domain?
These two CNAME targets configure different features on different services. Do not substitute one for the other.

Verification, certificates, and waiting time
A platform may require proof that you control the hostname before it routes traffic or issues a certificate. Firebase Hosting’s custom-domain guide illustrates the separate concepts: add an ownership TXT record, route DNS, and allow certificate provisioning. It is useful background, not a replacement for a streaming provider’s own steps: Google Firebase: Connect a custom domain.
In a self-managed AWS delivery setup, AWS describes requesting a certificate, adding the hostname as an alternate CloudFront domain, and routing DNS to the distribution. Managed streaming services may automate these tasks or use another workflow, so do not import AWS settings unless your setup actually uses that architecture: AWS: Hosting on-demand streaming video with Amazon S3, CloudFront, and Route 53.

Timing depends on the provider and the DNS and certificate steps involved. OneStream says its verification can take seconds to a few hours; Firebase says some DNS or TLS steps may take up to 24 hours. These are provider-specific estimates, not a universal promise. Use the readiness status in your streaming platform rather than relying on a fixed wait.
Common setup problems and fixes
- The hostname does not resolve to the service: compare the DNS record type, name, and target against the platform’s instructions. Check whether your DNS panel expects a full hostname or only the subdomain label.
- The platform cannot verify ownership: check that any requested TXT or other verification record is present under the exact name and value the service supplied. Leave the record in place until the platform confirms verification.
- The service reports a proxy or DNS error: review its proxy requirements. Cloudflare Stream custom ingest and OneStream hosted-page instructions call for DNS-only or disabled proxying in the documented cases.
- The page loads without HTTPS or the certificate is pending: wait for the provider’s certificate process and check its dashboard for the hostname’s status. Do not share the URL as ready until the service confirms secure access.
- The viewer URL opens but shows no intended page or player: confirm you registered a viewer-facing page or playback hostname, not an ingest hostname. DNS alone does not create the destination page.
- The encoder cannot connect after changing its destination: confirm the platform has finished configuring the custom ingest hostname and that the encoder is using the exact secure ingest URL and protocol provided by the service. Restore the previous working destination while you investigate if the live stream must remain available.
