FFmpeg’s real-time input option helps a file play at its recorded frame rate, but continuous playback also needs a playlist strategy, process monitoring, and a plan for recovery.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Recorded classes you have the rights to broadcast, stored where the cloud server or streaming service can access them.
- A cloud VM and an operator comfortable configuring its encoder and process supervision, or a hosted service that manages the streaming workflow.
- A plan for file storage, outbound bandwidth, monitoring, and what should happen if playback or the network fails.
There is no universal cloud VM size or monthly cost for this job. The right resources and price depend on the files’ codecs and frame rates, whether they need transcoding, the stream bitrate, storage needs, cloud region, and provider egress charges.

YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous streams of prerecorded video. Gyre describes uploading files, arranging a looping playlist, connecting a YouTube account, and scheduling a stream on its product page. Check its current plans and limits directly; its promotional claims about growth, retention, or time saved are vendor claims, not independent performance findings.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to create a stream, or use Manage → Schedule stream to schedule one. Use the Stream tab for a new stream.
- Set the event title, visibility, and other details. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility; choose deliberately, especially when testing.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter both in the encoder. Keep the key private: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or tutorial.
- For a scheduled stream, start the encoder and wait for YouTube to show the preview. YouTube’s documented sequence is to click Go live after the preview appears.
See YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder instructions for its current Studio workflow. Confirm live streaming is enabled on the channel before spending time configuring the server.

Connect the cloud encoder securely
Put the stream URL and key into the encoder’s server and key fields. Prefer RTMPS if your encoder supports it. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP carried through SSL and documents YouTube’s ingestion requirements: use the valid protocol, endpoint, and application path, connect on port 443, and preserve the hostname for SNI-based authentication during the TLS handshake.
Use the ingest address YouTube supplies rather than copying one from an old tutorial. For API-based encoders, Google documents the RTMPS ingestion address fields returned by the LiveStreams API. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Store the key in a protected configuration file or secret store, restrict access to the streaming process, and avoid embedding it in logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the server configuration.

Use FFmpeg for real-time file playback
FFmpeg’s -re input option reads a file at its native frame rate; the documentation describes it as equivalent to -readrate 1. It is useful when output timing matters, such as live streaming. This option paces input—it does not choose the next class, supervise the process, or guarantee recovery after every failure. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
There is no safe universal command for every class archive. Inputs can differ in codecs, frame rates, audio tracks, aspect ratios, and duration. Some may be stream-copied; others may require transcoding. Select an input and playlist strategy for your files, then test it in a private or unlisted stream before scheduling a public event.
Separate pacing, sequencing, and recovery
- Pacing: use FFmpeg’s real-time input behavior to avoid reading a file as fast as possible and sending it as an untimed burst.
- Sequencing: configure a playlist runner or another file-concatenation strategy to determine what plays next and whether the list loops. Test transitions for gaps, unexpected stops, and audio changes.
- Supervision: configure an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor to detect a failed encoder and restart it. A restart policy is not the same as a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcast.
- Observation: retain useful logs and check both that the process is running and that YouTube Live Control Room receives a healthy preview for the intended event.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API exposes stream health status and configuration issues for operators who implement API monitoring. An API monitor is optional; it requires an implementation. The FFmpeg documentation supports the pacing behavior, not a particular tested playlist or supervisor recipe.

Protect the class recordings and the channel
Broadcast only recordings you have permission to use, including any music, images, slides, or other material within them. A stream key grants publishing access, so limit who can read it and replace it if it leaks. Test visibility and event selection before going public; an incorrectly selected event can expose a test or send the class to the wrong broadcast.
Plan YouTube archives separately
YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a much longer continuous broadcast will produce one complete, automatically archived replay. If preserving every class matters, retain the source recordings independently or divide the broadcast into shorter events, then verify the resulting replay in the channel.

- Upload your recorded classes.
- Add your YouTube stream key.
- Go live.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube receives no signal
- Check that the encoder is running and the stream URL and key match the intended stream in Live Control Room.
- Confirm the cloud server can make the required outbound connection. For RTMPS, verify the endpoint and path, port 443, and hostname/SNI handling.
- Look at encoder logs and YouTube’s stream health or configuration status for a more specific error.
The stream starts but playback is not continuous
- Check whether the playlist runner has a next-file and loop behavior configured; real-time pacing alone does not sequence files.
- Test file transitions and audio tracks. A file that differs in codec, frame rate, aspect ratio, or audio layout may need separate handling.
- Confirm that the supervisor monitors and restarts the encoder, and that its logs reveal why a process exited.
The live event is not public
Check the event’s visibility in Studio and confirm you are using the intended scheduled stream. For scheduled events, wait for the encoder preview before selecting Go live.
The replay is missing or incomplete
Check the broadcast duration and the channel’s resulting archive. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours; keep original recordings if the complete class library must be preserved.
