For desk work on Meta Quest 3, start with a clear seated area and a Stationary boundary; use Roomscale only when an app or task requires you to move and you can clear a larger area. Passthrough can keep the room in view, but it is a camera feed—not natural optical see-through—so keep physical hazards visible and do not rely on it for fine reading or precise movement.
Choose a seated or Roomscale setup
A seated desk session usually suits Quest 3’s Stationary boundary, which Meta describes as a compact option for smaller spaces and seated experiences. Roomscale is intended for movement within a mapped, unobstructed play area. Reaching with your hands or leaning from your torso at a desk does not by itself require you to use Roomscale.

The figures describe different things: the 6.5 ft × 6.5 ft figure is Meta’s stated minimum, while the larger room and playable-area figures are its recommendation. Neither means that the space is automatically safe. See Meta’s boundary guidance and device comparison.

- Clear the desk and reach zone. Before putting on the headset, move breakable objects, loose cables, pets, and trip hazards out of the area. Leave room for your arms to move without striking nearby objects. This is practical workspace advice, not a quoted Meta checklist.
- Start seated if the task is desk-based. Set up a Stationary boundary for a compact, mostly seated session. If the app requires walking or other free movement, first clear the floor area and choose Roomscale.
- Map the boundary for the activity. For Roomscale, distinguish Meta’s minimum from its recommended setup, and allow additional clearance around furniture and walls. For seated work, keep the desk and reach zone clear even if you are not moving around the room.
Set up room geometry when an experience supports it
Some browser-based mixed-reality experiences can use room settings to define furniture such as a desk or couch. Meta’s WebXR documentation describes detected planes for supported features and gives the path Settings > Boundary > Mixed Reality for setting up room geometry. Follow the current on-device labels and the app’s prompts if they differ; this step is relevant to supported experiences, not a requirement for every productivity app. Details are in Meta’s Mixed Reality Support in Browser documentation.

Use passthrough without treating it as a safety view
Quest 3 supports full-color passthrough: the headset shows a camera view of the physical surroundings, and Meta describes depth estimation for occlusion between physical and virtual objects. That does not make the view equivalent to looking through a clear lens. Meta says passthrough quality and latency vary, and cautions against experiences that require fine-text reading or precise real-world movement based on the passthrough image. Its device comparison lists Quest 3 passthrough at 4 MP and 18 PPD, plus a depth sensor; those specifications do not establish that the image resembles natural vision.
- Position virtual windows so you can still see the desk, objects, and people you need to notice.
- Do not use the passthrough image as your sole guide for handling small objects or moving precisely through the room.
- If text is hard to read against the real background, reposition the virtual content or use a more suitable viewing mode rather than straining to read it.

Keep hazards and transitions in mind
A boundary marks the edge of a mapped area; it does not certify that the space inside it is clear. Meta warns that scene understanding can miss hazards and states, “The scene is not a safety feature.” Keep the boundary available, avoid placing large virtual objects over the floor or objects you need to see, and pause to reorient when switching between mixed reality and fully immersive content. Make the session manageable and comfortable
Meta lists Quest 3 battery life at approximately 2 hours. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed runtime: workload and conditions can affect how long a session lasts. Plan breaks or charging around the actual task rather than assuming a fixed work block.

Comfort varies by wearer. The official material cited here does not establish a universal face-fit routine or comparative benefits for third-party straps, facial interfaces, battery straps, or prescription-lens inserts. As practical guidance, take breaks and readjust if pressure or discomfort develops; verify Quest 3 compatibility before considering an accessory, and do not assume a particular product will improve comfort for everyone.
