How to Set Up a Church Sermon Loop on YouTube Using OBS Media Source

Use OBS Media Source to repeat a sermon locally, then send the scene to YouTube Live with a tested encoder connection and sustainable settings.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop one prerecorded sermon on YouTube Live, add it to an OBS Media Source, turn on Loop, then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with its stream URL and stream key. OBS repeats the video locally; OBS then encodes and sends the scene to YouTube. Test the complete stream before the service.

Before you begin

You need OBS installed, a local sermon video, a YouTube channel eligible to livestream, and an internet connection that can sustain the chosen stream settings. YouTube’s current onboarding guidance lists a minimum age of 16 and no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days as eligibility conditions. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

  • Confirm that the church has permission to stream the sermon and any music, slides, or other material in it. Rights depend on ownership, licenses, and jurisdiction.
  • Decide whether the stream should be public, private, or unlisted. YouTube’s default visibility can vary by the user’s age, so verify the setting rather than assuming it.
  • Keep the YouTube stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to the channel.

Loop one sermon video in OBS

  1. Choose a scene. In OBS, select the scene that should carry the sermon. Create a new scene if you want to keep the stream setup separate from other scenes.
  2. Add a Media Source. In the Sources panel, click the add button, choose Media Source, and create or select a source. Browse to the local video file. OBS lists common supported formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM; see OBS’s Media Sources guide.
  3. Enable Loop. In the source properties, check Loop. It is off by default; when enabled, OBS replays the file after playback completes.
  4. Check the scene and sound. Confirm the video fits the canvas as intended, then play it in the OBS preview and check that its audio reaches the mixer. Adjust the source size or placement if needed.

This setting loops playback inside OBS; it does not itself start a YouTube broadcast. OBS sends the scene’s output to YouTube only after you configure the encoder connection and start streaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Loop a playlist of sermon clips instead

For several files in sequence, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than adding separate Media Sources. Add the clips to its playlist and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed, and OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The single-file Media Source workflow does not require VLC.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select the stream for the service. Choose the visibility setting you decided on—public, private, or unlisted—and confirm it.
  2. Copy the connection details. In the stream settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Do not share or publish the key. If it is compromised, YouTube says it can be reset in Live Control Room; see Manage live stream settings.
  3. Enter the details in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream URL and key as prompted. Verify the account and destination before going live.
  4. Set the encoder output. Open Settings → Output and configure the streaming encoder and bitrate. Then open Settings → Video to set the output resolution and frame rate. Choose values your upload connection can sustain consistently, not simply the highest available.
  5. Start a test stream. Click Start Streaming in OBS and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before making the service public.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for your connection

YouTube’s encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Setting Practical guidance
Resolution and frame rate Match the source and the connection you can reliably maintain. A higher resolution is not better if the upload connection cannot sustain its bitrate.
Video bitrate YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. This is a specific example, not a universal bitrate for every codec, resolution, or frame rate.
Rate control Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, as specified in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Keyframe interval Set two seconds where available; do not exceed four seconds.
Upload headroom YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream’s needs. Other upload traffic can reduce what is available to OBS.

For example, if you choose the 5 Mbps H.264 setting for 1080p at 30 fps, the connection needs capacity for that stream plus YouTube’s recommended headroom, with additional room for other network use and fluctuations. A wired connection and a test at the service location can help reveal instability before the broadcast.

Run a pre-service test

  1. Set the stream to private or unlisted if you do not want the test to be publicly discoverable.
  2. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the YouTube Live Control Room preview.
  3. Watch long enough to confirm the video plays and returns to its beginning. For a playlist, check that the clips advance and the playlist repeats.
  4. Listen to the audio in the preview. Check volume, clarity, and whether any unwanted audio is present.
  5. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS’s connection status. Correct warnings and repeat the test if settings change.
  6. During the service, monitor the Live Control Room and OBS. YouTube advises testing before going live; see its live-streaming tips and streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The video stops instead of repeating: Open the Media Source properties and make sure Loop is checked. For a VLC Video playlist, check Loop Playlist.
  • The source is blank or will not play: Confirm the selected file path is correct and that the file is one of the formats OBS lists as common video formats. Reopen the source properties and select the file again if it was moved.
  • The playlist source is unavailable: Install VLC and ensure its bitness matches OBS. OBS’s guidance specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • YouTube does not show a preview: Check that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube stream and that the stream URL and key were entered correctly. Keep the key private; reset it through Live Control Room if it may have been exposed.
  • The stream health is poor or the stream disconnects: The upload connection may not reliably sustain the selected bitrate, or other devices may be using bandwidth. Lower the bitrate or resolution, reduce competing network traffic, and test again while keeping YouTube’s 20% upload headroom recommendation in mind.
  • The video is stable but audio is missing: Check the source audio and OBS audio mixer during playback, then verify audio in the YouTube preview before the service.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to continue without keeping OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
