To keep a 24/7 YouTube radio stream from going silent, add a second audio source that OBS can hear—such as a looping local audio file or another input device—and decide how it will be switched on when the main feed fails. A source sitting in a scene is not automatic failover: the OBS documentation cited here does not establish built-in silence detection that switches sources for you.
This protects against an audio-feed problem while OBS is still streaming. A YouTube backup ingestion path addresses a different failure: the connection carrying the encoder feed to YouTube. You may need both protections.

Choose the failure you need to cover
| Protection | What it covers | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Alternate audio source in OBS | The program audio goes silent or its audio device fails while the encoder remains connected. | Choose manual switching or separately verified automation; check the source, its level, and the fallback content. |
| YouTube backup ingestion path | The primary encoder connection or ingestion path fails. | The cited YouTube backup-server instructions apply to HLS. HLS has higher latency than RTMP, and the primary and backup stream settings must match. |
Neither protects against every failure. For example, a local fallback file does not repair a dropped internet connection, while a backup ingestion URL does not itself detect that the program audio has gone silent.

Set up a fallback audio source in OBS
1. Choose suitable fallback audio
Use a second audio input device or a local audio file. OBS Media Source supports MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV files and includes a Loop option. A short station ident or suitable fallback playlist can maintain audio continuity, but it will not recreate the live program. Confirm that you have the rights needed to use the fallback content; these setup instructions do not determine music licensing obligations.

2. Add and configure the source
- In OBS, open the scene used for the stream and add an audio input device source for your alternate device, or add a Media Source for a local file.
- For a Media Source, select the intended file and enable Loop if it should repeat. Confirm the source is active in the scene.
- Give the source a clear name, such as “Backup audio,” so an operator can identify it quickly in the Sources and Audio Mixer panels.
OBS documents these source types and media-file options, not automatic silence-triggered switching between audio sources. Do not assume that adding a backup source makes OBS detect silence or change sources unattended.
3. Decide how you will switch
For a manual setup, assign an operator to select or unmute the fallback source when the main program feed fails, and verify the exact scene and mixer controls before going live. If you want automation, use a separately verified mechanism that can detect the failure you care about and switch sources; confirm its behavior under test rather than assuming OBS does this by default.

4. Check the signal and avoid duplicate capture
Watch the OBS Audio Mixer meters while the alternate source plays, and monitor it through headphones or another monitoring output. The meter confirms that OBS is receiving audio; listening helps catch silence, distortion, or an unsuitable level. If you capture a device as a scene-specific source, OBS cautions that also selecting the same device globally can create echo. Disable the duplicate global device capture where appropriate.

5. Test the failure you expect
- Make a recording or test stream using the intended scene and audio routing.
- Deliberately stop or disconnect the main audio feed while leaving OBS connected.
- Switch to the fallback using your planned manual control or verified automation.
- Confirm the fallback reaches the encoder at a suitable level and that the transition behaves as intended.
A test stream is especially useful for checking the actual transition, not just whether the backup source appears in OBS. Repeat the test after changing devices, scenes, routing, or automation.

Configure a separate YouTube backup ingestion path
If you also want protection against an encoder-to-YouTube connection failure, YouTube Help documents a backup server URL for HLS ingestion. Its instruction is: “If you need a backup ingestion, copy the ‘Backup server URL.’” In YouTube’s Live Control Room, select HLS and copy the Backup server URL, then configure an HLS-capable encoder for the backup path. This is an HLS-specific workflow, not a universal RTMP backup setting; YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP.
YouTube warns that failover requires the primary and backup streams to use matching settings. Check the following on both paths, and monitor the Live Control Room health indicator for configuration errors:

Troubleshoot common problems
- The backup source is present but silent: Check that it is active in the current scene, that the correct file or device is selected, and that the OBS mixer meter moves. Test playback and device availability before relying on it.
- The source meter moves, but you cannot hear it: Check your monitoring output and listen through the selected headphones or other output. Confirm the stream mix is also receiving the source.
- You hear echo or doubled audio: Check whether the same device is captured both globally and as a scene source. Disable the duplicate capture if needed.
- The local file stops after one play: Reopen the Media Source properties and enable Loop.
- The fallback does not take over automatically: OBS’s cited source and mixer documentation does not establish built-in automatic silence detection. Use an operator switch or verify a separate automation mechanism.
- YouTube reports a backup-stream configuration error: Compare the primary and backup resolution, codecs, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, and channels. Review Live Control Room’s health indicator.
- The backup ingestion setup adds more delay than expected: YouTube’s cited backup-server workflow is for HLS, which YouTube says has higher latency than RTMP.
