To keep an Odia radio station live on YouTube, route an authorized station audio feed through an encoder, pair it with suitable video, and connect the encoder to a YouTube Live stream using its server URL and stream key. Continuous operation also requires rights cleared for YouTube, a stable internet connection, monitoring, and a plan to recover from interruptions; YouTube does not promise one broadcast will remain live indefinitely.
Before you set up the stream
- Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet its minimum age requirement of 16 to livestream. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming overview. Initial activation may take time.
- Confirm rights for the actual YouTube use. Terrestrial broadcast permissions may not cover a live simulcast on YouTube or an archive. Confirm the rights for the station’s repertoire, recordings, performances, territories, live use, and any saved copy with the relevant rights holders and licensing bodies.
- Map the signal path. Identify the radio console or playout system output, the encoder computer or device, available audio inputs, and the internet connection’s sustained upload capacity. Compatibility depends on the station’s equipment and connectors.
- Choose a visual presentation. YouTube’s encoder workflow sends audio and video. A studio camera, program visual, or other suitable image can provide video, but that visual must also be owned or cleared. A static image or music is not automatically rights-free.
Connect the station feed to YouTube Live
- Take an output from the console or playout system. Use an appropriate output and connect it to the encoder. If the computer lacks a compatible audio input, an audio interface may be needed; first check connector type, signal level, channel count, and computer compatibility. Not every station needs one.
- Prepare the video and audio in the encoder. Confirm that the encoder receives both the station audio and the intended visual. Listen for clean levels and check that the visual is present before you go live.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions.
- Enter the connection details in the encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into the encoder’s corresponding fields. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Set the encoder and test. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted connection for sending the feed. Use the bitrate and video settings appropriate for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, then test the complete feed before announcing it publicly.
- Start sending and verify playback. Start the encoder, check the stream’s health in Live Control Room, and open the viewer watch page to confirm that audio and video play as expected.
Recommended encoder settings and bandwidth
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends H.264 ingest at 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Its listed recommendation for stereo audio is 128 Kbps. These are platform configuration recommendations, not guarantees of viewer quality or reliability; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use.

- Use CBR. YouTube advises constant bitrate for the encoder stream.
- Choose a sustainable bitrate. Base the setting on measured, sustained upload capacity, not just the internet plan’s advertised maximum. Leave capacity for normal network variation and other station traffic.
- Match settings end to end. Check that the encoder, video source, and selected YouTube stream settings agree on resolution and frame rate.
- Test before going public. Watch for dropped frames, buffering, audio distortion, and stream-health warnings. Lower the bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings.
Google’s developer documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through an SSL connection. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
Plan for 24/7 operation and recovery
A continuous radio stream is an operating process, not an indefinite-broadcast guarantee from YouTube. Keep the encoder, audio source, power, and network path available, and assign someone to watch the stream and respond to problems.

- Monitor the full chain. Check that the console or playout system is producing audio, the encoder is receiving it, Live Control Room reports a healthy feed, and viewers can hear and see the stream.
- Prepare for interruptions. Document how staff will restart the encoder and restore the audio source after a computer, power, or internet failure. If the station has backup power or a second network path, test it rather than assuming it will work.
- Plan stream boundaries and archives. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be fully archived, or that one stream can stay live indefinitely. Choose a restart and archive workflow, then verify how it behaves on the station’s channel. See YouTube’s encoder and stream guidance.
- Recheck platform requirements. YouTube’s interface and requirements can change; confirm current setup details in Live Control Room before launch.
Clear music and other content for YouTube
YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions require the channel operator to have the necessary rights for the live content on Google services worldwide, including music rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. A radio station should not assume its terrestrial permissions automatically cover a YouTube simulcast or an archived stream; the applicable rights depend on the station, territory, repertoire, and agreements.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including other live broadcasts. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or end it. Licensed material can still trigger an interruption if the channel is not on the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. If the stream is archived, Content ID claims may also be made afterward. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and resolve rights and allowlisting questions with the relevant rights holders before broadcasting.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No audio on the watch page | The console output is not reaching the encoder, an input is misselected, or levels are too low. | Check the source output, cable, audio interface if used, encoder input selection, and meters. Listen to the encoder’s output before going live. |
| Video or audio keeps buffering | The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or may be fluctuating. | Check sustained upload capacity and Live Control Room health. Test at a lower bitrate or resolution and reduce competing network traffic. |
| Encoder cannot connect | The server URL or stream key may be incorrect, or the stream may not be ready in Live Control Room. | Recheck the details for the correct stream, confirm the encoder is configured to send to YouTube, and keep the stream key private. |
| Live stream is interrupted or replaced | YouTube may have detected third-party content, or the channel may lack the rights owner’s Content ID allowlisting. | Check YouTube’s live copyright guidance and contact the relevant rights holder about permissions and allowlisting. |
| The archive is incomplete or missing | The stream may have exceeded the documented under-12-hour automatic archive condition. | Use a planned stream-boundary and archive workflow, and verify the result on the channel rather than relying on an indefinite stream to produce a complete archive. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube stream to continue without keeping a station computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not take a live camera feed; it plays uploaded videos.
Nothing has to stay on at home or at the station for the cloud stream to keep running. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, plus looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. UPI and cards are supported in India.
