Set the rack’s bar supports so you can unrack and rerack an empty bar under control without reaching onto your toes. Set the safety bars so they stay clear during a normal squat but catch the bar if you cannot stand back up. The correct settings depend on your rack, your bar path and your squat depth, so follow the rack’s manual and test the setup with an unloaded bar before adding weight.
1. Check the rack, manual and training space
Start with the manual for your exact rack. Assembly, attachment orientation, locking pins, compatible bar dimensions and load limits vary by model; do not assume another rack uses the same setup. Assemble the frame as instructed, use the specified hardware, and confirm that screws, pins and other fasteners are secure. For example, the RPM Power Adjustable Pro Squat Rack manual directs users to secure its spotter bars with pull pins.

Check the floor and leave room for the bar ends, plates, walkout and your movement. Decathlon recommends a level floor and a safety perimeter of at least 1 m for its Power Rack 900; that clearance is model-specific, not a universal requirement for every rack. Decathlon also says bars used with that rack must be at least 2 m long and either 28 mm or 50 mm in diameter. Check your own rack’s compatibility specifications rather than applying those dimensions to other models.

- With no plates on the bar, adjust both J-hooks or bar supports to the same height.
- Approach the bar as you would for a squat and check that you can take it out without an awkward shrug, a tiptoe reach or a deep dip.
- Unrack the empty bar under control, take your normal steps into position, then return it to the supports. Make sure you can guide it back onto both supports without stretching or guessing.
For its Adjustable Pro Squat Rack, RPM Power recommends setting the supports just below shoulder height so the lifter can lift the bar while already in a squat position. Treat this as guidance for that rack, not a universal measurement: the right hole depends on your body and the rack’s adjustment increments.

3. Set the safety bars for your actual squat
- Begin with the empty bar on the supports. Put the safeties at matching heights and make sure their locks or pins are fully engaged.
- Rehearse your normal squat depth and bar path. The safeties should not touch the bar during a normal repetition.
- Check that, if you crouch lower than usual or cannot stand back up, the bar would meet the safeties before trapping you in a position you cannot exit. Adjust the height and repeat the empty-bar check if needed.
RPM Power recommends its spotter bars just below shoulder level when the lifter is at the lowest squat position. Use that as a product-specific cue, then verify where the bar actually sits relative to the safeties in your own position. There is no universal hole number or numerical safety-bar height established by the manufacturer guidance cited here.
4. Do a final check before loading the bar
- Confirm both bar supports and both safeties are level, seated correctly and locked.
- Check that the rack is assembled securely and does not shift or have frame play. If it moves, stop and check its assembly and floor; Decathlon notes that tightening screws and floor conditions can affect movement.
- Make sure there is adequate space around the rack and that your bar and attachments match the rack’s specifications.
- Follow the rack’s stated load limit. Do not infer capacity from appearance or from another model’s rating.
Once those checks pass, load the bar and begin with a weight you can control. If you change the rack, bar, shoes or squat depth, repeat the unloaded setup check before relying on the safeties.
