The normal game client is a different Steam application (app ID 251570).

What you need before starting
Use the PC that will run the world as the server machine. It can be your gaming PC, but the dedicated process must remain running whenever friends should be able to join. A separate always-on PC avoids interrupting play when the host shuts down the game.

- A Windows PC with enough free storage for the server files, world saves, logs and backups.
- A SteamCMD download extracted to a folder you can find again.
- A Steam account that can log in anonymously to download the dedicated-server application.
- Administrative access to Windows Firewall and the router that connects the server PC to the internet.
- A copy of the game client for every player, with a build compatible with the server build.
- A plan for backups and restarts before inviting other players.
The dedicated application is separate from the game installation. Installing the game through the Steam client does not, by itself, install the dedicated server.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
1. Create a dedicated install folder
Download SteamCMD for Windows from Valve, extract it, and create a folder such as C:7dtd-server for the server files. Avoid putting the server in a personal game-library folder that you routinely reorganize. A short path makes batch files and backup scripts easier to maintain.

2. Run the SteamCMD commands
Start steamcmd.exe. At the SteamCMD prompt, set the install directory, sign in anonymously, install app 294420, validate the files, and quit:
force_install_dir C:7dtd-server
login anonymous
app_update 294420 validate
quitThe validate option checks the downloaded files and replaces damaged or missing files. The command can be run again later to update the server; it is also the normal recovery step when a file has been corrupted.

Open C:7dtd-server and locate the supplied serverconfig.xml and the dedicated launch script, commonly startdedicated.bat. Do not edit the shipped configuration in place. Copy it to a custom name such as myserver.xml; updates can replace shipped files, while your copy keeps your settings separate.
Configure serverconfig.xml safely
Open your copied file in a text editor that preserves XML. Keep the existing element names and quotation marks, change only the values you need, and save the file as plain text. XML is unforgiving: an unclosed tag or an accidental character can prevent startup.

Keep the personal configuration outside the update-managed defaults. When moving the server to another PC, copy the custom XML together with the save folder and any required mods, then check every path for the new machine.

Networking option and NAT
The official configuration reference notes that dedicated servers should disable SteamNetworking when there is no NAT router between users and the server, or when port forwarding is configured correctly. Treat that option as a networking choice rather than a universal toggle: follow the current comments in your shipped configuration and use the mode that matches your topology.

Launch the server in dedicated mode
Using the supplied batch file
Run startdedicated.bat from the server folder. If the script points to a different configuration filename, edit the script or use the command-line form below so it loads your copy.
Using the documented executable command
From a Command Prompt opened in the server directory, launch the dedicated executable with headless flags and your configuration file:
7DaysToDieServer.exe -batchmode -nographics -configfile=myserver.xml -dedicatedThe exact executable filename can vary with the current server build; use the dedicated executable supplied in the installation. -batchmode and -nographics keep the process running without an interactive game window, while -configfile=myserver.xml selects your custom settings and -dedicated starts server mode.
Leave the console window open while testing. Watch for a message indicating that the world has loaded and the server is listening. If the process exits immediately, inspect the last lines for an XML syntax error, an invalid path, a port already in use, or a missing file.

Open Windows Firewall and router ports
Local access and internet access are different tests. A player on the same network may connect even when your router blocks outside traffic, so test both deliberately.
Allow the process through Windows Firewall
- Open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security.
- Create inbound rules for the dedicated server executable, or create port rules that match the ports configured in
serverconfig.xml. - Choose the network profiles you actually use and allow the connection.
- Apply the rules to the private/public profile appropriate to your network; do not expose more profiles than necessary.
If Windows displays a firewall prompt the first time the server starts, allowing the dedicated executable on the intended network profile creates the basic exception. Explicit inbound rules are easier to audit when you run more than one instance.
Forward the ports on the router
Sign in to the router, find Port Forwarding or NAT, and point the rule at the server PC’s local IP address. The sources give this as an example external-access rule:

These are examples, not a promise that every build uses exactly this set. Forward the ServerPort and any additional ports required by the current server build, then mirror those choices in Windows Firewall. If you run multiple instances, assign distinct ports and create a complete rule set for each one.
Give friends your public address and the configured port, not the server’s private address such as 192.168.x.x. A DHCP reservation or other stable local address prevents a router rule from pointing at the wrong PC after a reboot. Do not publish a private server password or your local network details in a public post.

Connect and verify the installation
- Start the dedicated process and wait for the world to finish loading.
- From another PC on the same network, try the server’s local address and port. This isolates game, configuration and firewall problems from router problems.
- Ask a friend outside your network to connect using your public address and configured port.
- Join with the same game build the server is running. A client that is ahead of or behind the server may be refused even when networking is correct.
- Check that the expected world, seed, password and player cap are in effect before inviting the whole group.
Once a save has been created, treat its world name and save location as fixed data. Changing a path or world setting later can make the server appear to have reset when it is actually loading a different save.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The server is not visible in the browser
- Confirm that the dedicated process is still running and has finished loading.
- Check that
ServerNameis spelled as expected and that you are searching the correct browser filters. - Verify that client and server builds are compatible.
- Test a direct connection with the reachable address and port instead of relying only on browser discovery.
Friends get a timeout or connection refused
- Confirm the router rule targets the server PC’s current local IP.
- Compare the forwarded ports with
ServerPortand any additional ports required by the build. - Check both TCP and UDP rules where your configuration calls for them.
- Review Windows Firewall inbound rules and make sure the active network profile is allowed.
- Test from outside your home network; some routers do not support a local client connecting through its own public address.
The server closes during startup
- Restore the last known-good copy of
myserver.xmland reapply one change at a time. - Check XML punctuation, tag names, file encoding and the spelling of save paths.
- Look for a port conflict with another server process and choose a different
ServerPortif necessary. - Run
app_update 294420 validateto repair the installation.
A player is rejected for a version mismatch
Update the server and the affected clients to compatible builds. Do not assume that a successful SteamCMD download means every player’s game updated at the same moment; coordinate a restart and tell players which build they should run.
The world or characters appear to be missing
Stop the server and check SaveGameFolder, the selected GameWorld, and the exact configuration file passed with -configfile. A copied XML that points to a new location can create a fresh save while the original remains intact elsewhere. Restore from a known backup only after identifying the correct path.

Updates, mods and backups
Update the server
Announce downtime, stop the dedicated process, back up the saves and configuration, then run the same SteamCMD update command:
force_install_dir C:7dtd-server
login anonymous
app_update 294420 validate
quitRestart with the same custom configuration and verify the world before players return. Keep a note of the server build and update date so you can correlate a problem with a recent change.
Install server-side mods carefully
Place server-side mods in the server’s Mods/ directory. Some mods also require matching files on each player’s client; tell players exactly which files and versions are required. Back up the save before adding, removing or upgrading a mod, because a mod change can alter data that an older setup cannot read.
Use a simple backup rotation
- Copy the custom XML and the complete save location before every update or mod change.
- Keep at least one backup on a different drive or machine so a disk failure does not destroy the only copy.
- Label backups with the date, server build and mod set.
- Periodically restore a copy to a test folder to confirm that the backup is usable.
Keep the world running persistently
A dedicated server is a standalone process, so the world can continue when the host player is not in the game. For unattended operation, use a wrapper, Windows Scheduled Task or service manager that starts the process after reboot and restarts it after a failure. The specific tool is an implementation choice; make sure it does not launch multiple copies against the same save.

Automatic restarts do not replace backups: a service can bring the process back, but it cannot recover a corrupted save.
Self-hosting compared with managed hosting
Running the server on your own PC gives maximum control, while a managed host trades some control for less administration. Exact managed-host prices and features vary, so verify them at the time you choose one.

Choose self-hosting when you want file-level control and are comfortable maintaining networking and backups. Choose managed hosting when avoiding router exposure, hardware uptime and routine administration matters more than direct control.
