The safest way to copy a VPS is to use a provider-native snapshot transfer when the provider supports it. Otherwise, create a VPS at the destination, copy application files and databases, restore configuration, test on the new server, and only then change DNS. Keep the original VPS and a fresh backup until the new machine has survived production traffic.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
A snapshot is a point-in-time image, not a live mirror. Any writes made after it is created are absent, replacement servers normally receive new public and private IP addresses, and attached volumes, managed databases, Kubernetes clusters, and hosted applications may need separate migration work.

Your source and destination determine how much of the VPS can be copied as one unit. A same-provider account move may transfer a complete server image, while a move between vendors is usually a rebuild-and-restore project.
| Method | What moves | Downtime and consistency | IP and attached-resource impact | Rollback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Provider snapshot transfer | Boot disk, operating system, installed packages, users, SSH keys, and configuration present when the snapshot was taken | Usually a short maintenance window; data is consistent only at snapshot time unless applications are quiesced first | New VPS gets different addresses; volumes and special services may be excluded | Easy while the source VPS and original snapshot are retained |
| Snapshot copied between regions | Provider image of the instance or block storage, depending on the service | Point-in-time copy; transfer duration depends on image size | Replacement instance receives new addresses and may change region-specific behavior | Keep the source-region instance until verification |
| Export and restore between providers | Files, databases, certificates, application settings, and selected system configuration | Downtime is controlled by the final sync and database cutover; consistency depends on your backup method | New addresses, firewall rules, DNS records, allowlists, and provider integrations must be updated | Source remains available as a fallback |
| Application-level migration | Only the application and its data, rebuilt on a clean operating system | Can minimize downtime with replication or staged sync, but requires the most configuration work | All infrastructure settings are recreated; external services must be re-authorized | Rollback is a DNS reversal if the old application remains writable-safe |
Use a snapshot when the destination supports the same image format and you want the closest possible copy of the server. Use export and restore when changing vendors, operating systems, architectures, or storage layouts, or when you need to leave obsolete packages behind.

What a VPS copy includes—and what it does not
Data captured in a snapshot
A machine snapshot records the disks and system state available at one instant. That normally includes the operating system, installed software, local users, SSH keys, service files, web content, and databases stored on the captured disk. Amazon Lightsail describes this limitation precisely: “A snapshot contains all of the data that is needed to restore your resource (from the moment when the snapshot was taken).”
Running processes are not a substitute for a consistent backup. A database may have unflushed transactions or application writes occurring while the image is created. For a busy service, pause writes, put the application in maintenance mode, or take a database-native backup before making the final snapshot.
Items that commonly sit outside the image
- Separate block-storage volumes or network filesystems.
- Managed database instances, object-storage buckets, queues, and caches.
- Kubernetes clusters, container orchestration control planes, and provider-managed applications.
- Floating or reserved IP addresses, reverse-DNS assignments, load balancer configuration, and provider firewall objects.
- DNS zones, registrar settings, external monitoring, payment webhooks, OAuth callbacks, and IP allowlists.
Make a separate export or recreation plan for each item. Treat the VPS image as one component of the service, not the service itself.
DigitalOcean: transfer a Droplet snapshot
DigitalOcean states, “You can’t directly transfer a Droplet to another user, but you can transfer a snapshot of a Droplet.” The supported pattern is to snapshot the Droplet, transfer that snapshot to the other account or team, create a new Droplet from it, test, and then move DNS.
Procedure
- On the source account, create a Droplet snapshot after stopping writes or completing a database backup.
- If you need a copy to remain in the original team, create a second snapshot first. A transferred snapshot leaves the original team, so the transferred image is not also retained there.
- Use the snapshot transfer action and select the destination account or team. Confirm ownership and region details before accepting the transfer.
- In the destination account, create a new Droplet from the transferred snapshot. Choose equal-or-larger CPU, memory, and disk capacity; an image cannot restore onto a smaller disk than its used layout requires.
- Confirm that the new Droplet contains the expected users and SSH keys. DigitalOcean notes that keys and user accounts present when the snapshot was taken are carried into the new Droplet.
- Attach or recreate any volumes and firewall rules that were not part of the Droplet snapshot.
- Test services on the new address, then update DNS and any systems that allow traffic by IP.
Droplet IP addresses belong to Droplets, not snapshots. A snapshot transfer therefore does not preserve the old public address. DigitalOcean volume snapshots cannot be transferred directly, so copy the data to a destination volume or use a separate volume migration procedure. Kubernetes clusters and App Platform applications require separate recreation or redeployment rather than a Droplet-image transfer.
Amazon Lightsail: copy a snapshot across Regions
Lightsail snapshots are point-in-time baselines. AWS documents copying instance and block-storage snapshots between Regions and launching a replacement instance from the copied snapshot.
Recommended Free Tools
Procedure
- Create an instance snapshot after quiescing the application and taking database backups.
- Copy the instance snapshot, and any required block-storage snapshot, to the destination Region.
- Launch a new Lightsail instance from the copied snapshot, selecting a plan with enough memory, CPU, disk, and transfer capacity.
- Recreate attachments, static content, firewall rules, scheduled jobs, and monitoring that were not included in the image.
- Check the operating system, services, certificates, and application configuration on the new instance.
- Change DNS and update every allowlist, monitoring target, webhook, and configuration file that references the old addresses.
A Lightsail instance cannot be directly moved between Regions. The replacement receives different private and public IP addresses, so applications that use address-based licensing, database access, firewall rules, or callback URLs need explicit updates. Snapshot storage is billable; remove temporary copies only after you have a verified backup and a rollback decision.
Cross-provider migration: rebuild, transfer, restore
When vendors differ, assume that a raw snapshot cannot be launched directly. The reliable approach is to provision a destination VPS, copy data and configuration, restore services, and perform a controlled cutover. DigitalOcean recommends taking a backup at the old provider, uploading it to the new Droplet, and updating settings such as database credentials. Vultr describes an analogous process for migrations from several major cloud and shared-hosting environments, using exported files and databases with scp or rsync.

Prepare an equivalent destination
- Select an equal-or-larger disk and enough memory for the source workload, including peak usage and database cache.
- Choose the operating system and CPU architecture required by your packages and application binaries.
- Create a non-root administrative user, install the required SSH key, and restrict root login and password authentication according to your security policy.
- Recreate network firewalls, private networks, security groups, and required inbound and outbound ports.
- Install the same runtime versions, web server, process supervisor, container engine, language packages, and system libraries before restoring the application.
Copy files with a final synchronization
For a Linux-to-Linux move, an initial synchronization can run while the source remains online:
rsync -aHAX --numeric-ids --info=progress2 /srv/app/ user@NEW_IP:/srv/app/
Options preserve permissions, hard links, extended attributes, ACLs, and numeric ownership where the destination filesystem supports them. Replace the paths and account names with your layout. Do not copy pseudo-filesystems such as /proc, /sys, /dev, or /run as ordinary data. For a small set of files, scp -r is simpler, but it does not provide rsync’s efficient delta transfers or metadata controls.
Before the final sync, stop application writers or enable maintenance mode. Run rsync again, then verify ownership with stat, permissions with namei -l, and available space with df -h. Copy secrets through an encrypted channel and rotate credentials if the transfer touched an untrusted workstation.
Export and restore databases
Use the database engine’s backup format rather than copying live database files between different operating-system or database versions.
- PostgreSQL: create a custom-format dump with
pg_dump -Fc, copy it to the destination, create an empty database and role, and restore withpg_restore. For all databases and global roles, usepg_dumpall --globals-onlyin addition to per-database dumps. - MySQL or MariaDB: run
mysqldump --single-transaction --routines --triggersfor transactional tables, or use the engine’s physical-backup tooling when the dataset is too large for a logical dump. Create users and grants on the destination before importing application data. - Redis and similar caches: decide whether the data is disposable. Rebuilding a cache is safer than restoring stale session data; persistent queues require a service-specific export and replay plan.
Test a restore before migration day. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Compare row counts, application checksums, migration versions, and representative queries after import.

- Databases, queues, uploaded files, scheduled exports, and retention policies.
- Firewall rules, fail2ban or equivalent controls, private addresses, IP allowlists, and outbound mail settings.
- External integrations such as payment callbacks, webhooks, SMTP relays, OAuth redirect URLs, monitoring checks, and license servers.
- Attached volumes and provider resources that a snapshot does not include.
Save the inventory outside the VPS so a failed migration does not destroy your checklist.
2. Lower DNS TTL before the move
Reduce the relevant DNS records’ TTL in advance, commonly to a few minutes, while they still point to the source. Resolver caches may retain the previous value until the old TTL expires, so lowering it immediately before cutover cannot guarantee an instant change. Restore a normal TTL after the new endpoint is stable.

3. Set a maintenance and rollback window
Choose a period that covers the final backup, transfer, verification, DNS change, and observation time. Tell users when writes will stop. Define the rollback trigger in advance, such as failed health checks, rising error rates, corrupt data, or a critical integration that cannot be repaired quickly.
4. Take consistent final backups
Quiesce write-heavy services, flush queues, stop workers that can create new records, and create the final snapshot or database dump. Label it with the date and source hostname. Verify that the backup completed and that there is enough destination storage to restore it.

5. Transfer or restore
Use the provider snapshot workflow when available. Otherwise, provision the destination, install the required software, copy files, import databases, and recreate system configuration. Keep the source read-only or in maintenance mode during the final synchronization so no writes are lost between the last backup and cutover.
6. Reconcile identity and configuration
Replace old hostnames, private addresses, database endpoints, credentials, storage mount points, API keys, and environment-specific paths. Confirm filesystem ownership and service users; a copied file owned by the wrong numeric user can expose secrets or prevent a daemon from starting.
7. Validate before changing DNS
Use the destination IP or a temporary hostname. Test the home page and authenticated flows, create and read a record, upload and download a file, run background jobs, send and receive email, renew or load TLS certificates, and inspect logs. Check CPU, memory, disk, inode, and database metrics under representative load.
8. Cut over traffic
Change A and AAAA records, load-balancer targets, reverse-proxy upstreams, and any hard-coded service endpoints. Update IP allowlists and monitoring at the same time. Because old DNS answers remain cached, keep the source available and safe to serve during propagation.

10. Retire only after the rollback period
Keep the original VPS powered on but protected from accidental writes, along with snapshots and database backups. Once traffic is consistently reaching the destination and all scheduled jobs have run successfully, take a final destination backup, then decommission the source and delete temporary transfer artifacts according to your retention policy.

DNS, IP addresses, and services that break after a move
DNS and certificates
Changing an A or AAAA record does not change every dependent record. Check CNAMEs, MX records, reverse DNS, DNS-based certificate validation, and split-horizon zones. If certificates are tied to hostnames, they normally remain valid, but the destination must have the private key and renewal challenge path. Reissue a certificate when the key was not copied or when policy requires a new key.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIP-based controls
Replace the old address in database grants, firewall rules, partner allowlists, monitoring checks, SMTP provider policies, VPN peers, webhooks, and license systems. Search configuration files and infrastructure manifests for the old address instead of relying on memory.
Scheduled and background work
Copied cron entries and systemd timers can run twice if the old and new servers are both online. Disable writers and workers on the source before enabling them on the destination, then confirm that each timer has a single owner. Pay special attention to billing, email, cleanup, and data-export jobs.
Common failure modes and fixes
The snapshot boots but the application does not
Inspect service status and logs first. Typical causes are a changed network interface name, missing volume mounts, wrong environment variables, a database that did not start, or a package that expects a different kernel or architecture. Correct the destination configuration rather than repeatedly rebooting.
Files exist but permissions are wrong
Restore the intended user and group ownership, then apply restrictive modes to secrets, private keys, and configuration files. If numeric user IDs differ between servers, map ownership deliberately instead of applying a blanket recursive chmod or chown.
The database is missing recent records
Writes made after the snapshot or dump are not included. Return the source to service, take a new consistent backup, and repeat the final synchronization. Do not merge two independently writable database copies without an engine-specific conflict plan.
Users still reach the old server
Check the authoritative DNS zone, TTL values, cached resolver responses, IPv6 records, and any CDN or load balancer in front of the VPS. Keep the old server available until caches have expired and monitoring confirms that traffic has moved.
Disk space is unexpectedly low
Snapshots preserve the source layout, while a rebuild may allocate a different filesystem or leave less free space. Compare df -h, inode usage, database growth, and volume mounts. Expand the destination disk or attach a larger volume before enabling writes.
Best Value
Special resources need their own migration plan
Attached block storage
Confirm whether the provider includes each volume in the instance snapshot. If not, create a volume snapshot, copy the data with rsync, or export files to object storage. Record mount points and filesystem UUIDs so the destination mounts the volume at the same path.
Managed databases and object storage
Use the service’s native export, replication, or cross-region copy feature. Recreate users, network policies, encryption keys, lifecycle rules, and retention settings. A VPS snapshot cannot capture a managed service that lives outside the VPS.
Kubernetes and provider applications
Recreate the cluster or application from manifests, images, secrets, persistent-volume snapshots, and deployment configuration. Validate ingress, certificates, storage classes, and external load balancers separately. A Droplet or instance image is not a portable cluster backup.
Cost, security, and downtime decisions
Snapshot storage, cross-region copies, destination VPS hours, temporary disks, data-transfer bandwidth, and duplicate monitoring can all incur charges. Keep two servers only for the period required to verify the cutover, but do not delete the rollback copy to save a small amount of storage before the migration is proven.
Limit snapshot and backup access to the accounts that need it; images can contain private keys, API tokens, customer data, and password hashes. Encrypt exports in transit and at rest, remove temporary archives from shared workstations, and rotate secrets if access was broader than intended.
Downtime is mainly determined by database consistency and the final synchronization, not by snapshot creation alone. A small static site may switch in minutes. A write-heavy application may need replication, a longer maintenance window, or an application-level migration to avoid losing transactions.
When the move is complete
- The destination serves the production hostname over valid TLS.
- All critical read and write paths have been exercised with real-shaped data.
- Databases, queues, uploads, email, cron jobs, and integrations operate once, not twice.
- DNS, allowlists, monitoring, reverse DNS, and provider firewalls reference the new addresses.
- Backups run successfully from the destination and a restore test has passed.
- The source VPS and final backups are retained for the agreed rollback period.
Once these checks pass, document the new server’s inventory, credentials ownership, backup schedule, and decommission date. That record turns the next provider or account change from an emergency exercise into a repeatable procedure.
