Connect your Xbox to an HDMI-capable AV receiver, or connect it to your TV and return audio to the receiver over ARC/eARC. Then choose an HDMI audio format supported by the device connected directly to the console, and configure the receiver for five speakers plus a subwoofer. Xbox Series X|S has no optical audio output, so use HDMI for those consoles.
Choose the right HDMI connection
Use the route that supports both your video needs and the audio formats your equipment can pass. Xbox audio options depend on the capabilities reported by the device directly connected to the console: that may be the receiver or the TV.

| Connection route | When to use it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox → AV receiver → TV | The receiver supports the video features you use and the desired audio formats. | Check the receiver’s HDMI input and output capabilities, video passthrough, cables, and speaker configuration. Xbox Wire recommends appropriately certified HDMI cables when a receiver sits between the console and TV: Xbox Series X|S compatibility and connections. |
| Xbox → TV → receiver | The TV is the better video endpoint, or the receiver cannot pass through the video features you need. | Connect the TV’s designated ARC/eARC port to the receiver’s ARC/eARC port. Check that the TV passes audio through and that the receiver supports the format. Xbox Wire recommends direct-to-TV routing where appropriate, with audio returned to the home-theater device over ARC/eARC: Xbox Series X|S compatibility and connections. |
| Xbox Series X|S → optical | Not available as a direct console connection. | Series X|S has no optical audio output. Use HDMI instead. Microsoft notes that the optical audio option is available only on older Xbox consoles: Spatial Sound for app developers for Windows, Xbox, and HoloLens 2. |
ARC and eARC capabilities vary by TV and receiver. The port labels alone do not establish which audio formats the full path supports; check both devices’ manuals for their supported formats and audio pass-through settings.

- Connect the console using your chosen route and turn on the TV and receiver.
- On Xbox, open Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
- Under the HDMI audio options, choose a format supported by the device directly connected to the Xbox. Microsoft says the HDMI audio list reflects the formats supported by the connected AVR, soundbar, or TV: Microsoft’s spatial sound documentation.
- If you want Dolby Atmos for home theater or DTS:X for home theater, select the appropriate HDMI bitstream option and matching format. Xbox Wire documents this setup path; Microsoft notes that Xbox may prompt you to install Dolby Access or DTS Sound Unbound for those selections: Xbox Wire and Microsoft Learn.
- If using the TV-to-receiver route, set the TV’s digital audio output to pass through a supported multichannel format. The setting’s name and available formats depend on the TV model; consult its manual.
Configure the receiver and speakers for 5.1
A conventional 5.1 layout has five main channels—front left, center, front right, surround left, and surround right—plus the low-frequency effects (LFE) channel, usually reproduced by a subwoofer. The receiver manages speaker routing and bass handling, so use its setup menu to declare the speakers you actually have.
#1 Best Overall
- 5.1.2ch Surround Sound System: A 5.1.2-channel system featuring up-firing speakers, surround sound, and a powerful subwoofer creates lifelike, multidimensional audio. Feel the Sky Around You—raindrops falling from above, helicopters circling overhead, thunder rumbling in all directions. Sound isn’t just around you, it engulfs you, as if the ceiling disappeared. This is Dolby Atmos: not just heard, but felt.
- Up-Firing Drivers with Neodymium Core: The up-firing channels use neodymium internal magnets and 18-core large voice coils to enhance height precision and vertical throw. This aerospace-grade configuration ensures better high-frequency dynamics, delivering focused and elevated sound images that unlock the true potential of Dolby Atmos.
- 360° SurroundX Audio: SurroundX technology combines two rear surround speakers and dual up-firing Atmos drivers to build a true 360° sound field. Powered by intelligent spatial algorithms, the system precisely positions audio around and above you—enhancing Dolby Atmos with a more natural, three-dimensional soundstage. Note: Not compatible with DTS.
- Lossless Audio Transmission: Unlock full Dolby Atmos performance with HDMI eARC, supporting up to 37Mbps bandwidth for lossless 5.1.2-channel audio. Compared to regular ARC, eARC delivers richer detail and better surround effects with no compression. With CEC, your TV and soundbar work as one—power, volume, and input sync automatically for effortless control.
- Advanced App Control: Customize every detail of your audio experience with the Ultimea App. Fine-tune your surround sound with 13-step level adjustment (-6 to +6), optimize with a 10-band graphic EQ, and choose from 121 preset sound settings. Enjoy seamless OTA updates that unlock new features and keep your system performing at its peak.
- Confirm the receiver is set to a 5.1 speaker configuration and that each speaker is assigned to the correct output.
- Check speaker wiring and subwoofer connection against the receiver and speaker manuals.
- Run the receiver’s calibration routine if it has one, following its instructions for microphone placement and room setup.
- Play known multichannel content and check the receiver’s input or status display to see what signal it receives. A receiver may upmix a stereo signal or apply other processing; that does not mean the Xbox source itself is discrete 5.1.
Understand the format choices
Standard 5.1 and bitstream
5.1 describes the speaker-channel layout, not a guarantee that every game or app sends six discrete channels. A bitstream setting sends encoded audio to a compatible downstream device for decoding. Select a format the entire HDMI chain supports; the Xbox menu’s available formats are constrained by the device directly connected to the console.
Atmos and DTS:X for home theater
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are spatial-audio formats, not synonyms for owning five speakers and a subwoofer. Their home-theater options use HDMI and require compatible equipment along the route. Whether a particular game or app produces those formats depends on that content and the connected devices; do not assume every title outputs Atmos, DTS:X, or discrete 5.1.

Uncompressed audio
An uncompressed option may be suitable when the connected device chain supports it. There is no universally best setting: receiver and TV compatibility, the selected route, and the content all matter.

Why is 5.1 not showing up on Xbox?
The HDMI format is missing
First identify which device is connected directly to the Xbox. If the console connects to the TV, the format list reflects what the TV reports—not necessarily every format the receiver could decode. If it connects to the receiver, the receiver must report the format. Check the selected HDMI input and the format support documented for that device and the rest of the route.
Only stereo appears when the Xbox connects to the TV
Confirm that the TV and receiver are connected through their designated ARC/eARC ports, and that the TV is set to pass audio through to the receiver. Menu labels and format support differ among TV models, so use the TV manual for the exact setting.

Atmos or DTS:X asks you to install an app
That prompt is expected when the related home-theater format is selected and its app is not installed: Dolby Access for Dolby Atmos or DTS Sound Unbound for DTS:X. Microsoft documents these prompts in its Xbox spatial sound guidance.

You are looking for an optical setting on Series X|S
Series X|S does not provide optical audio output. Route sound over HDMI, either through the receiver or through the TV’s ARC/eARC connection.
Audio is delayed
There is no single route or setting that universally fixes audio delay. Try another supported connection route or audio setting, then consult the TV and receiver manuals for model-specific sync controls.
Check the whole signal path
For reliable 5.1 playback, the Xbox, the directly connected HDMI device, any audio-return connection, the receiver, and the content all have to align. If the receiver reports stereo, determine whether the Xbox is sending stereo, the TV is passing only stereo, or the receiver is displaying a processed mode. Use the receiver’s signal-status display and the manuals for your exact TV and receiver to isolate the point where multichannel audio is lost.
