Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo stream 4K at 60 frames per second from OBS on a Mac, enable live streaming on your YouTube channel, connect OBS to a stream in YouTube Live Control Room, set the video output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, and configure a codec-appropriate bitrate. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1 and H.265/HEVC at 4K60. Whether your Mac and internet connection can sustain those settings depends on your hardware, scene, and connection, so test the complete setup before broadcasting.
Before you start: check the channel, Mac, and connection
- Enable YouTube live streaming early. If the channel has never streamed before, activate live streaming in YouTube Studio ahead of time. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Check macOS compatibility. OBS lists macOS 11 or later and an Intel or Apple Silicon processor as basic macOS requirements. That means OBS can run; it does not guarantee your Mac can render and encode a demanding 4K60 scene. See OBS system requirements.
- Confirm your video source supports the target. The camera, capture device, screen source, and scene must supply the resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast. Upscaling a lower-resolution source to 4K changes its output dimensions, not its original detail.
- Check stable upload capacity. The encoder must send the selected bitrate continuously. Use the YouTube recommendation for your chosen codec as a target, not as proof that your connection or Mac can sustain it.
Install OBS on macOS
- Download the official macOS installer from the OBS Mac installation guide.
- Open the downloaded DMG and drag OBS into the Applications folder.
- Launch OBS and grant the macOS permissions needed for your sources, such as screen or camera access. Exact prompts depend on which sources you use.
Create a YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. If you need an overview of the process, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube explains these settings in Manage live stream settings.
- In OBS, open the stream configuration and select YouTube or a custom service as appropriate for the available connection options. Enter the stream URL and key if prompted, then apply the settings.
- Keep the stream key private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. YouTube supports creating a custom key and reusing it where appropriate; avoid sharing it or exposing it in a recording or screenshot.
Set OBS video output to 4K at 60 fps
- In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set both the base (canvas) resolution and the output (scaled) resolution to 3840×2160.
- Set the common frame rate to 60 fps. Check that the actual source also runs at the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Open Settings → Output and configure the streaming encoder, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval described below. OBS menu choices can vary with the installed version and Mac hardware; verify the selected encoder is actually available in your encoder menu.
Choose a codec and bitrate
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends the following ingest bitrates for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. These are live-stream recommendations, not recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos.

| Ingest codec | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
Figures are YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee of achievable quality or performance. Choose a rate your upload connection can sustain steadily, and confirm that OBS offers an encoder for the codec you intend to send. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as ingest codec options, but the available OBS choices depend on the Mac and encoder implementation. YouTube recommends RTMPS where available, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose the encoder for your Mac
- Apple Silicon: OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox streaming support with H.264 on Apple Silicon. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, but does not guarantee that a particular Mac can render and encode every 4K60 scene without dropped frames.
- Intel Mac: OBS directs Intel Mac streamers to x264. OBS says the Intel Mac VideoToolbox streaming path does not support the constant-bitrate mode required by most streaming services.
- If 4K60 is unstable: Simplify the scene or lower the output resolution or frame rate, then test again. OBS notes that performance varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See OBS hardware encoding guidance.
Set audio and SDR color
- For a standard stereo stream, configure AAC audio at 44.1 kHz.
- YouTube lists 48 kHz for 5.1 surround audio and supports 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS only with AAC.
- For SDR video, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color space with 8-bit depth.
Use the audio and color options that match your actual sources and chosen output. YouTube’s complete recommendations are on its encoder settings page.

Test the stream before your event
- Where appropriate, use an unlisted or private test stream rather than testing in front of your intended audience.
- Reproduce the real broadcast: use the same sources, overlays, audio, and amount of movement. A static desktop is not a useful test of a scene with camera motion or animation.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Confirm that picture, audio, and motion look right and that the connection sustains the chosen bitrate.
- Watch the stream for long enough to expose interruptions or performance problems, and leave time to adjust settings before the actual broadcast. YouTube advises testing before a stream and monitoring stream health during it.
YouTube’s guidance says 4K/2160p live streams use normal latency; the low-latency option is unavailable at that resolution. If your broadcast relies on real-time audience interaction, tell viewers to expect normal latency.
Troubleshooting common 4K60 problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot connect to YouTube | Incorrect stream URL or key, or live streaming has not been activated | Check the stream’s URL and key in Live Control Room, replace the key in OBS if needed, and confirm the channel is enabled for live streaming. |
| Stream health reports connection problems | The upload connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate | Test the connection during a representative stream. Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain; if necessary, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, or the stream drops frames | The Mac is under load from encoding, sources, or scene complexity | Check OBS performance indicators, close unnecessary workloads, simplify browser sources or overlays, and test a lower output resolution or frame rate. No single Mac model threshold can be inferred from the basic system requirements. |
| Output is not actually 4K60 | OBS output, source, or capture hardware is set to a lower resolution or frame rate | Verify OBS canvas and scaled output settings, the source’s own format, and any capture-device configuration. Upscaling cannot restore detail absent from the source. |
| Picture looks soft despite 4K output | The source itself is lower resolution, or the chosen bitrate is not suited to the content and connection | Check the source resolution first. Re-test with the recommended bitrate for the selected codec if your upload capacity can sustain it. |
| Audio is missing or distorted | Wrong audio source, track, or sample-rate configuration | Check OBS audio meters and source routing, then test the intended stereo or 5.1 setup in the Live Control Room preview. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than a live camera or interactive OBS production, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; it streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera-based OBS broadcasts. Start the free first day.
