To loop a video on YouTube Live from Ubuntu, add it to OBS as a looping Media Source, set the video output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, choose a supported encoder and YouTube-compatible bitrate, then connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room and test the feed. The computer must stay on and capable of rendering and encoding the scene for as long as the stream runs.
Before you start
- An Ubuntu computer with OBS Studio installed and a local video file—or VLC installed if you want to play a playlist.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- A reliable wired or wireless internet connection with enough available upload capacity for the selected bitrate.
- A video and audio track that you have the right to stream. Make sure you have permission for the footage, music, and other material; livestreaming it does not remove copyright obligations.
OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland among its Linux requirements. Those are baseline compatibility requirements, not a guarantee of sustained 4K60 performance. OBS cautions that a compatible system may still be unable to stream or record at a chosen workload. Check the current OBS installation guidance for your Ubuntu release and test the actual machine, drivers, and encoder you plan to use.

1. Install OBS and create a looping video source
Install OBS using the current Linux instructions from the OBS Project’s Linux installation guide. Its listed Ubuntu coverage includes Ubuntu 18.04 or newer; follow the guide for your installed release rather than assuming every package or driver behaves the same.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLoop one video file
- Open OBS and create a scene in the Scenes panel.
- In Sources, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source, select the video file, and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Resize or fit the source to the canvas. Right-click it and use the available transform option if it needs to fill the canvas.
OBS’s Media Source works on Linux and provides a loop option for a local file. If the image or sound jumps at the repeat point, inspect the recording’s final and opening frames and audio transition. The loop control repeats playback, but it cannot make every file transition gaplessly.

Loop a playlist
For multiple files, add a VLC Video source and build a playlist. VLC must be installed so OBS can use its libraries. Loop Playlist is on by default; confirm the playlist order and test a complete pass before going live.
2. Set the canvas and frame rate to 4K60
- In OBS, open Settings → Video.
- Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 3840×2160.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160.
- Set Common FPS Values to 60.
- Select Apply, then OK.
A 4K output does not add detail to a lower-resolution source: OBS can scale it up, but the source remains lower resolution. Rendering and encoding a 3840×2160, 60 fps scene is demanding, and the load also depends on source decoding, filters, overlays, and other scene elements. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point, not proof that a setup will hold up during a long stream. Run a representative rehearsal and watch OBS’s rendering and encoding lag indicators.

3. Configure the encoder for YouTube
Open Settings → Output and select Advanced output mode if needed to expose encoder controls. Choose an encoder available and stable in your OBS installation. Hardware encoding can shift work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component; availability depends on the GPU, Ubuntu drivers, OBS build, and codec. OBS documents Intel Quick Sync support on Linux for compatible Intel HD Graphics hardware. Do not assume an encoder is available simply because a GPU advertises a particular brand or feature.

| Ingest codec | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder-setting recommendations, not a guarantee of quality or performance on a particular system. Use a codec OBS actually offers and YouTube accepts for the selected ingest protocol. If a stable AV1 or HEVC option is unavailable, H.264 is the documented fallback, but YouTube’s recommended 4K60 bitrate for it is higher.
Set the remaining video and audio parameters
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Scan and pixels: progressive scan and square pixels.
- SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit.
- Audio: AAC or MP3; for stereo, YouTube recommends 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz.
YouTube says 4K streams are optimized for normal latency; the low-latency optimization option is unavailable at 4K. Recheck YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before a planned broadcast because recommendations can change.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the server information and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not share it publicly or include it in a screenshot.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select YouTube RTMPS if it is available. Otherwise, enter the server and key from Live Control Room in the matching fields.
- Select Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear in Live Control Room, then check stream health before making the stream public.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Its encoder setup guidance covers the stream key and connecting an encoder.
5. Check upload capacity and rehearse
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total outgoing stream bitrate. At its recommended H.264 rate of 50 Mbps, that means planning for at least 60 Mbps of available upload; at 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC, plan for at least 42 Mbps. These figures apply the 20% headroom guidance to the listed video bitrates; they are not separate bitrate targets published by YouTube. Leave room for any other outgoing traffic, and remember that other devices on a shared network can reduce what is available to OBS.

Run an upload speed test on the same network you will use for the stream. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours before a planned event and starting it at least 15 minutes early. Use that time to confirm the preview, playback loop, audio/video sync, stream health, and OBS rendering and encoding load. YouTube’s streaming tips explain its preparation and monitoring guidance.
6. Plan for long streams and archives
YouTube can automatically archive livestreams shorter than 12 hours, including streams at 1440p and 2160p. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not be captured at all. If you need a reliable copy of a long loop, enable local recording in OBS, confirm that the recording file continues to grow, and arrange a controlled stop and restart before the stream passes 12 hours. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Troubleshooting common 4K60 loop problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming feed | Wrong or stale stream key, server setting, or connection mode. | Copy the current server and key from the selected Live Control Room stream. Check the OBS stream settings and use YouTube RTMPS where available. Keep the key private. |
| Stream health warns about bitrate or connection | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or the network is shared. | Test upload on the live network, compare available capacity with the selected bitrate plus headroom, and reduce competing traffic. If the encoder is unstable, try a lower output workload or a codec/bitrate the machine and connection can sustain. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding lag | The system cannot sustain the scene, resolution, frame rate, or encoder workload. | Check the selected encoder and driver, simplify filters and overlays, and rehearse again. Reducing resolution or frame rate may help, but then the output is no longer 4K60. |
| Video looks soft despite a 4K output setting | The source itself is lower resolution or lacks detail. | Use a higher-resolution source where available; upscaling a smaller file does not restore missing detail. |
| Playback pauses or the loop transition is noticeable | The source file, playlist, decoder, or transition at the end/start of the file is causing the interruption. | Check that Loop is enabled for Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video, inspect the media’s ending and opening, and test a full cycle before the broadcast. |
| The live archive is missing or incomplete | The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archival threshold, or capture otherwise did not complete. | Keep an OBS local recording for long-running use and plan a controlled stop/restart if a YouTube archive is required. |
