Fix Puppeteer Screenshots of Indian Bank Websites Showing a Certificate Error

If Puppeteer captures a certificate warning on an Indian bank website, the screenshot is usually showing Chromium’s response to an HTTPS validation failure—not a rendering defect. Identify the exact certificate error and inspect the connection from the same machine or container before changing browser settings. For real banking sites, do not bypass the warning or enter credentials while it is present.

What the certificate warning means

When Puppeteer navigates to an HTTPS page, Chromium checks whether the connection’s certificate and hostname can be trusted under the browser runtime’s current rules. If those checks fail, Chromium may display an interstitial warning. A screenshot can faithfully capture that page; it does not, by itself, show that Puppeteer’s screenshot mechanism is broken.

A warning alone does not identify the cause. Possibilities include an expired or not-yet-valid certificate, a hostname mismatch, a missing intermediate certificate, an untrusted root in the runtime, or TLS interception by a proxy. Chromium’s root-store FAQ also documents that trust-store or verifier rollout behavior can affect some users, including an instance involving NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID: Chromium certificate FAQ.

Record the failure before changing settings

Capture enough detail to reproduce the failure. In particular, note the exact net::ERR_CERT_* code, the final URL after redirects, Puppeteer and browser versions, the operating system or container image, and the system clock. The certificate chain must be inspected from the same runtime that Puppeteer uses; a certificate viewed in another browser or on another machine may differ.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
  const page = await browser.newPage();

  page.on('requestfailed', request => {
    console.error('Request failed:', request.url(), request.failure()?.errorText);
  });

  try {
    const response = await page.goto('https://www.indianbank.in', {
      waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
      timeout: 45000
    });
    console.log('Final URL:', page.url());
    console.log('HTTP status:', response?.status() ?? 'no response');
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'bank-page.png', fullPage: true });
  } catch (error) {
    console.error('Navigation error:', error.message);
    console.error('URL at failure:', page.url());
  } finally {
    console.log('Puppeteer version:', puppeteer.version());
    console.log('Browser version:', await browser.version());
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

The URL in this example is only an example of a bank address; it is not a claim that the site currently has a certificate problem. Puppeteer’s page.goto() may reject on navigation errors, so log the exception as well as the page URL and failed-request details. If the browser reaches a certificate interstitial rather than throwing, the resulting page can still be captured; inspect what the page actually contains before treating the image as a valid site capture.

Check the certificate path in the affected runtime

  1. Confirm the final hostname. Follow redirects in the logs and compare the address-bar hostname with the certificate’s subject alternative names. A redirect to a different host can explain why the initial URL looks right but validation fails.
  2. Check the clock and validity dates. A badly skewed system clock can make a valid certificate appear not yet valid or expired. Confirm that the machine or container has the correct date and time.
  3. Inspect the chain. Verify that the server presents the needed intermediate certificates and that the chain terminates at a root trusted by the browser runtime. Do not assume the chain observed by your desktop browser is the same one seen inside a container.
  4. Check for TLS interception. Corporate proxies, security appliances, or local inspection software may substitute certificates. Establish whether the proxy is expected and whether its root certificate is installed in the trust store used by Chromium.
  5. Compare environments carefully. A current, separate browser can help determine whether the failure is environment-specific, but agreement or disagreement between browsers does not independently prove which endpoint is trustworthy.

Without the target hostname, exact error, runtime versions, environment, and observed chain, there is no reliable way to identify which cause applies to a particular bank page.

Fix the underlying cause where possible

  • If the system time is wrong, correct time synchronization and retry.
  • If a proxy is substituting a certificate, verify its configuration and install its approved root only through the organization’s normal security process. Do not add an unknown certificate merely to silence a warning.
  • If the hostname or redirect target is unexpected, confirm the official address independently and investigate the redirect rather than continuing to the unexpected host.
  • If the chain is incomplete or the certificate is invalid at the server, report the issue to the site operator and wait for a corrected connection. A screenshot setting cannot repair a server certificate.
  • If the failure occurs only in a particular container or browser build, update the runtime through a trusted distribution path and verify its certificate trust configuration.

When Puppeteer’s insecure-certificate option is appropriate

Puppeteer’s current ConnectOptions reference documents acceptInsecureCerts as “Whether to ignore HTTPS errors during navigation.” The documented default is false; the reference identifies Puppeteer version 25.12.0. This option changes browser acceptance behavior. It does not repair a certificate, establish the identity of a bank, or make credential entry safe.

Use it only in a controlled test fixture or an explicitly trusted, non-sensitive capture context where the certificate problem is understood. For example, where supported by the installed Puppeteer version, launch an isolated browser context with the option enabled:

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
  headless: true,
  acceptInsecureCerts: true
});

Keep this experiment away from online banking sessions and never submit banking credentials while ignoring HTTPS errors. If your Puppeteer version or launch mode does not accept the option, consult that version’s API reference rather than assuming configuration compatibility.

Do not confuse a certificate error with a blocked request

net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT is distinct from certificate-validation errors such as net::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting page discusses ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT in connection with Chrome’s HTTP-first warning feature; that workaround does not fix an HTTPS certificate validation failure: Puppeteer troubleshooting.

Banking safety: keep the warning meaningful

A clean-looking screenshot is not evidence that a banking connection is safe. Indian Bank advises customers to type its URL directly and check the correct address and SSL lock; its customer notice says: “Always type https://www.indianbank.in or https://www.indianbank.net.in the browser address field to access the web site/ netbanking page of Indian Bank.” See Indian Bank. That guidance does not establish the current certificate condition of either address, nor does it identify the cause of a warning on another bank’s site.

Indian Bank’s 2024 cyber-security audit document includes TLS version and algorithm and certificate-validity checks among HTTPS controls: Indian Bank cyber-security audit (2024). It is an audit checklist, not proof of the current status of any particular hostname. A separate 2018 study assessed a set of Indian banks, but its historical conclusions cannot establish the present health of a specific bank website: 2018 study of digital security in Indian banking.

ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status. These features do not make it appropriate to ignore a real certificate warning on a banking site or submit credentials through an untrusted connection.

For a non-sensitive page that is safe to capture, the API call is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Try it by signing up for ScreenshotNeo free.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • Screenshot shows a Chromium warning: record the exact certificate error and final URL; inspect the chain in the Puppeteer runtime before capturing or relying on the page.
  • Navigation throws an error: log the exception, failed request URL and error text, browser version, Puppeteer version, and environment. Do not treat a failed navigation as a successfully captured bank page.
  • The error differs between host and container: compare clock, Chromium build, root trust, proxy settings, and the chain each environment sees.
  • The page redirects: record the final hostname and validate the certificate for that host, not just the URL supplied to page.goto().
  • You are considering acceptInsecureCerts: reserve it for isolated, understood, non-sensitive tests; never use it as a banking workaround.
  • The code is ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT rather than ERR_CERT_*: investigate the HTTP-first or client-blocking issue separately; certificate bypass settings do not address it.
