To use a 3D avatar on a livestream, create or obtain a compatible model, load it in avatar-tracking software, choose a webcam or other supported tracking input, then capture the animated avatar in OBS. The key is matching the model’s file format to the app: VRoid Studio exports VRM, VSeeFace supports VRM0 (not VRM 1.0), and Warudo accepts VRM and its own .warudo format.
1. Create or choose a 3D avatar
Make a model with VRoid Studio
VRoid Studio is a free character-creation app that exports models as VRM. It is a practical starting point if you want to customize your character yourself. Its published requirements are for running VRoid Studio—not a guarantee that the same computer can smoothly run tracking software, OBS, and a live stream at once. The listed Windows baseline is Windows 8.1, 10, or 11; an Intel Core i5 6th generation or later or AMD Ryzen 5 3rd generation or later; 8 GB RAM; Intel Iris Graphics 540 or higher; and 10 GB free storage. For Mac, the page lists macOS 11, 8 GB RAM, and 10 GB storage. Check the current requirements on the VRoid Studio product page.

Use a purchased or commissioned model
If you do not want to model a character yourself, you can obtain a third-party avatar. Before paying, confirm its actual file format and version, whether your chosen avatar app supports it, and what the license allows. In particular, check commercial-use and redistribution terms for the model and any included assets. VRoid Studio’s product information also advises users to observe the licensing conditions for Pixiv or third-party model data.
2. Pick avatar software that supports the file
The avatar app animates and renders your model; OBS captures that output and combines it with your stream layout. These are separate jobs. Confirm compatibility before setting up tracking, because a model that imports into one app may not work in another.

3. Choose and configure tracking
Start with the equipment you have
A webcam can be enough to begin. VSeeFace describes face and hand tracking for VRM avatars. Warudo’s onboarding can suggest a motion-capture setup according to your available equipment; its documented example uses iFacialMocap on an iPhone for face tracking and MediaPipe through a webcam for hand tracking. That is one optional arrangement, not a requirement to buy an iPhone or a dedicated full-body tracker.

Load the model and check movement
- Open your chosen avatar app and import the model in a format and version it supports.
- Select or configure the tracking input described by that app—for example, a webcam-based input or an optional supported phone-tracking setup.
- Move in view of the camera and check that the avatar responds before building your OBS scene.
- Test the expressions and gestures you intend to use. A successful import does not ensure that every expression or body movement will work; behavior depends on both the model’s rig and the application.
4. Capture the avatar in OBS
VSeeFace: transparent Game Capture
VSeeFace documents using OBS Game Capture with “Allow transparency” enabled to capture the avatar without its background. Add the capture to your scene, enable that option, and check the result over your intended background. This is useful when you want the avatar layered over gameplay or another scene element.
VSeeFace: virtual camera
Alternatively, enable VSeeFace’s virtual camera in its settings, then select that camera as a source in OBS. VSeeFace documents virtual-camera output at 1280×720. Check framing and size in OBS before going live, especially if your scene uses a different canvas resolution.

Check the complete scene
- Confirm that the avatar is visible and moving in OBS, not just in the avatar app.
- Check that the capture method gives you the intended background or transparency.
- Make a private or unlisted test stream if you need to verify the final scene on YouTube; check the current visibility options in YouTube Studio.
- Keep the avatar app and OBS running during a conventional computer-based livestream. The avatar app renders the model; OBS captures and composes it.
Common problems and fixes
- The model will not import: Check the exact format and version. VSeeFace requires VRM0 rather than VRM 1.0; Warudo’s getting-started guide accepts VRM and .warudo.
- The model loads, but the face or body does not move: Check that the tracking input is selected and available, and that you are testing movement supported by the model’s rig. Importing alone does not validate every expression or gesture.
- The avatar has an unwanted background in OBS: If you use VSeeFace Game Capture, enable “Allow transparency.” Otherwise try its virtual-camera output and check the scene composition.
- The virtual-camera image does not fit the scene: VSeeFace documents 1280×720 output. Adjust the source’s placement and scale in OBS, or use the documented Game Capture route if it better fits your workflow.
- You are trying to load a VRM in VTube Studio: VTube Studio supports Live2D Cubism models, not 3D VRoid/VRM models. Use software with 3D format support, such as VSeeFace for VRM0 or Warudo for VRM and .warudo.
