You can run a prerecorded or generated YouTube live feed from a Hetzner Cloud server by hosting an encoder there and sending its output to YouTube Live. The VPS replaces the computer that would otherwise have to stay on; it does not remove the need to activate live streaming on your channel, configure an encoder, monitor bandwidth, or plan for interruptions.
For Indian creators, Hetzner’s Singapore location is one option to evaluate, not a proven best choice: the available sources do not establish latency from your ISP or from any Hetzner location to YouTube’s ingest servers. This guide covers the setup, the settings that matter, traffic and security planning, and the limits of calling a stream “24/7.”

How does a Hetzner VPS keep a YouTube stream running?
The VPS acts as the encoder host. It reads your video files or generated feed, encodes the output, and pushes it to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Your channel still needs live streaming enabled, and the encoder and network path must remain healthy for the broadcast to continue.
“24/7” describes the intended operation, not a guarantee. Hetzner’s Cloud and vServer service agreement describes commercially reasonable efforts toward 99.9% monthly availability for each Cloud Server. That figure is not an end-to-end promise for your media source, encoder, network route, YouTube ingestion, or public watch page.

What to prepare before provisioning
YouTube channel and stream
- Enable live streaming on your channel well before the planned launch. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Keep its server URL and stream key available for the encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs.

Media, operating system, and access
- Decide whether the source is a prerecorded playlist or a generated feed, and confirm the server can read it continuously.
- Choose a server operating system and encoder workflow you can maintain. The cited guidance does not identify a preferred FFmpeg or OBS configuration, nor establish a server size that is sufficient for a particular codec or resolution.
- Keep administrative access limited to what you need, and have a plan for checking process health, disk space, and outbound traffic.
Which Hetzner Cloud location should Indian creators choose?
Hetzner lists Falkenstein, Nuremberg, and Helsinki in Europe; Ashburn and Hillsboro in the United States; and Singapore in the ap-southeast region. Its Singapore product page explicitly addresses creators in India and nearby markets, making Singapore a sensible location to evaluate. It is not evidence that Singapore will always provide the lowest latency for your ISP or YouTube’s ingest edge.
Compare candidate regions using the actual route from your network to the server and onward to YouTube ingestion. Test the route and stream preview before committing to a continuous workload. Hetzner’s location information is available on its Cloud page and Singapore Cloud page.

How much outbound traffic will a continuous stream use?
Estimate traffic from the encoder’s bitrate, then compare that estimate with the exact server plan’s included outbound allowance. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate of 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, continuous video payload over 30 days is roughly 1.3 TB by arithmetic. That estimate excludes protocol overhead, reconnects, other server traffic, and bitrate variation; it is not a provider quote.
Hetzner’s traffic documentation lists 0.5–5 TB per month for Singapore CX and CPX Cloud Servers, varying by plan. The cited page was last changed on 2024-05-21, so verify the current allowance and price in the Console before ordering. See Hetzner billing FAQ and Hetzner traffic documentation.
Hetzner says outbound use beyond the included amount is charged in 100 MB blocks. Usage notices at 75% and 100% do not stop traffic. A stream can therefore continue generating charges after an alert; monitor usage rather than treating notices as automatic limits.

What YouTube encoder settings should you use?
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its technical guidance covers H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; supports up to 60 fps; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Confirm the current recommendations on YouTube’s live encoder settings page before launch.

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 values, not a guarantee of a suitable server size or ingest quality. Select settings the server can encode reliably and the server’s network connection can sustain. Higher bitrates also increase outbound traffic.
How do I set up a 24/7 YouTube live stream on a VPS?
- Enable YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, complete the live-stream activation process and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or select a stream. Open the Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key into a secure place accessible to the encoder.
- Provision a Hetzner Cloud Server. Compare available regions and plans, checking the current monthly traffic allowance and price. For India, include Singapore in your route tests without assuming it is automatically best.
- Install the encoder and source files. Configure the encoder to read the intended prerecorded playlist or generated feed and send it to YouTube over RTMPS using the stream details from the Live Control Room.
- Set the output parameters. Choose a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, and keyframe interval. For H.264, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate; its examples include 4 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30.
- Start with a private test. Check the YouTube preview and stream status, confirm audio and video behave as intended, and watch for encoder errors or dropped connections before making the broadcast public.
- Supervise the process. Configure a service supervisor or restart policy, health checks, and alerts as appropriate. These are implementation practices, not a tested configuration or a guarantee of end-to-end uptime. Check process health, YouTube status, disk space, and outbound traffic.
How should you secure the VPS?
Hetzner says Cloud Firewalls block inbound traffic unless a rule allows it; outbound traffic is allowed by default when no outbound rules are configured. A push-only encoder generally does not need a public video-ingest port. Keep only the management access you actually need and restrict SSH appropriately. This is security guidance based on the documented firewall behavior, not a provider-mandated configuration.

Never expose the YouTube stream key in a public repository, a shared support log, or a screenshot. If it is disclosed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.

Recovery and ongoing monitoring
A service supervisor can restart an encoder process after a process failure, but that alone cannot fix a failed source file, server, route, or YouTube ingest interruption. Monitor the encoder and YouTube’s stream status, and use alerts that make it possible to notice a stopped or degraded broadcast. Hetzner’s 99.9% availability effort applies to the Cloud Server under the service agreement’s conditions, not to the full broadcast chain.
Billing and traffic
Hetzner bills a Cloud Server while it exists, including when it is powered off. Deleting or stopping a server are not interchangeable cost controls: check the current billing terms and the Console before changing a live setup. Beyond-plan outbound traffic is charged in 100 MB blocks, and usage alerts do not stop it. Current prices and regional availability can change, so confirm them at order time.

Planning YouTube archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when sending stops. Do not assume that one uninterrupted stream running longer than 12 hours will yield a complete permanent archive. If an archive matters, plan deliberate stream segments and verify the current behavior in your channel’s Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
