You can loop a library of prerecorded sermons into a YouTube Live encoder feed with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, provided the files have compatible streams and you configure real-time output, YouTube ingest settings, and recovery around it. A concat file alone does not make a 24/7 service: test the full setup, supervise the encoder, and plan separately for outages and recordings.
What you need before you start
- A computer or server that can stay powered and connected for the duration of the stream.
- FFmpeg installed and available in your shell or command prompt.
- A playlist of sermon files you have permission to stream, with compatible audio and video streams if you plan to use stream copy.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus its stream URL and private stream key.
- Stable upload capacity with headroom, and a plan to monitor and restart the encoder if it fails.
YouTube says first-time live streaming activation may take up to 24 hours. Check the current eligibility requirements and Studio screens before the planned launch. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the activation and encoder workflow.

Prepare a compatible sermon playlist
When the concat demuxer and stream copy fit
The concat demuxer reads files in order and can avoid re-encoding when the files have matching streams. FFmpeg requires the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases; differences in resolution, frame rate, or audio layout can also make a playlist unsuitable for seamless stream copy. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPut the concat file in the same directory as the sermons and use simple relative filenames. Its first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for automatic recognition:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'sermon-01.mp4'
file 'sermon-02.mp4'
file 'sermon-03.mp4'
Save it as sermons.ffconcat. Relative paths avoid many surprises with the demuxer’s default safe-path handling. Do not relax that protection with -safe 0 for an untrusted or generated file list.
Check duration and transitions
The demuxer adjusts timestamps between files, but an inaccurate stored duration can create timestamp artifacts or gaps at transitions. Play the joined output locally and inspect audio, picture, and handoffs. FFmpeg allows durations to be overridden in a concat script when the file’s duration metadata is wrong; consult the concat documentation for syntax and behavior.

When to normalize or re-encode
If the sermons differ in codec, dimensions, frame rate, time base, or audio configuration, normalize them to one output profile first, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter when re-encoding is appropriate. This costs processing time and can introduce another generation of compression, but gives the encoder a consistent stream. FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat demuxer from the concat filter and recommends the filter where re-encoding is required.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if it is not already enabled, then create or schedule an encoder stream. Follow the current encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the event’s stream settings. YouTube describes the key as functioning like a password, so keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and shared repositories. See Manage live stream settings.
- Keep the key in a private configuration or environment variable and pass it to FFmpeg only on the machine that runs the encoder. Avoid putting a real key in a published example or command history.
- Start with an unlisted or test event where feasible. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the event public.
Choose YouTube ingest settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and keyframes about every two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Confirm the current values in YouTube’s encoder settings.

For H.264, YouTube lists these recommended example bitrates; they are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality for every source or network:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
For sermons, 720p30 or 1080p30 may be a reasonable starting point if it matches the source and your upload capacity. Avoid upscaling a low-resolution recording simply to select a higher setting. Keep the stream URL and key private; supply them as configuration values rather than copying credentials into a public example.

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Run a controlled FFmpeg test before going live
A concat file does not, by itself, guarantee real-time pacing, reconnection after a network interruption, process restart after failure, or indefinite operation. FFmpeg options and behavior can vary by build and source files. Treat this as an integration to test, not a proven appliance command. Build and verify the exact command for your FFmpeg version, files, output profile, and YouTube destination before relying on it.

Watch for errors, audio discontinuities, timestamp warnings, and black or frozen frames at file boundaries.
- Use a test or unlisted YouTube event when possible. Configure the encoder output for YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest and the chosen codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, audio/video quality, stream health, and that the intended audience can access the event.
- Observe at least several transitions between different sermon files, then test under the expected network load. Do not infer long-term reliability from a short successful preview.
YouTube recommends encoder testing and monitoring. Its streaming tips advise planning for the primary and backup streams and leaving about 20% upload bandwidth headroom over the total streaming bitrate; shared networks can reduce available capacity. Plan the 24/7 operations, not just the playlist
A continuous channel needs more than an FFmpeg process: the host must remain powered, storage and connectivity must be adequate, and someone should be responsible for alerting and recovery. Arrange process supervision or a restart procedure, monitor the feed, and decide who responds to failures. These are operational requirements to plan for; FFmpeg and YouTube do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
One long event or shorter rotated events?
A single long event avoids routine event changes but creates an archive risk. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends keeping a local archive. Do not rely on YouTube’s archive for a continuous 24/7 channel. Keep sermon masters locally and publish individual recordings separately, or establish a reviewed event-rotation and archive workflow. Rotation is a planning option, not a guarantee that every event will be archived. YouTube’s archive guidance.
Keep rights and recordings in order
The channel operator is responsible for having the necessary rights for live and archived material. Owning a sermon recording does not automatically clear worship music, backing tracks, images, or guest contributions in it. Check applicable permissions and licenses for the content and territories involved. YouTube’s livestream terms cover rights responsibilities and Community Guidelines.

Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg rejects the concat list: confirm the first line is exactly
ffconcat version 1.0, filenames are valid relative paths, and the file is in the expected working directory. Check that every listed file exists and that the list uses the expected syntax. - Playback breaks or glitches at a sermon boundary: inspect stream layouts, codecs, time bases, timestamps, and duration metadata. Use compatible files for stream copy, correct inaccurate duration entries where justified, or normalize/re-encode with a concat-filter workflow.
- YouTube does not receive a feed: verify the event is live-enabled, the ingest URL and private key are correct, the key has not been exposed or changed, and the selected protocol and codec match the current encoder guidance. Review the Live Control Room status.
- The picture or audio is unstable: compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec and output, verify CBR and keyframe settings, and check actual outbound capacity and competing network traffic.
- The feed stops after a connection or process fault: a concat list does not provide recovery policy. Add monitoring and a tested restart/supervision plan, and verify how the chosen FFmpeg build behaves after interruption before depending on it.
- No YouTube archive appears: check the event duration and retain a local recording. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so an archive workflow should not depend on the platform copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer and home internet connection to remain on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud.
