For a continuous internet-radio stream, a practical self-hosted route is AzuraCast on a Linux VPS. Its Docker deployment includes AutoDJ playback through Liquidsoap and Icecast-KH as the broadcasting frontend. The software can automate playback; it does not grant rights to the music. Before you put Indian commercial recordings on a public stream, get written confirmation from the relevant rights holders that your repertoire, internet use, territory and business model are covered.
This guide walks through planning, deployment and ongoing operation. A single VPS is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service, and an internet-radio stream is different from a 24/7 YouTube video stream.

Check music rights before you build the station
Clearance is separate from the streaming software. Treat rights in musical and literary works and rights in sound recordings as distinct questions; a license for one does not establish that the other is covered. The answer can depend on the songs and recordings you use, how listeners access them, where you distribute the stream and whether the service is commercial.

IPRS lists “Internet Non Interactive” (INTB) as a license category and says platforms using its repertoire, including online streaming services, need a license or must pay the author royalty share for its members. That makes it a relevant contact for a radio-style stream, but it does not by itself establish that a particular catalogue or operation is covered. Confirm the applicable route directly with IPRS’s license chooser and its licensing information.

PPL India says its standard tariff license covers on-ground music use and does not permit non-physical or digital use. Its FAQ directs radio-broadcast license inquiries to its licensing team. Do not assume an on-ground or terrestrial-radio permission also clears internet simulcasting: ask PPL about your exact online use and the sound recordings you plan to play. Other labels or recording owners may control relevant rights too. See PPL India’s tariff page and FAQ.
PPL India describes a repertoire exceeding 1.04 crore songs in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Punjabi, Marathi, Bhojpuri and Haryanvi. That is PPL’s stated library, not proof that a specific recording is included or licensed for internet streaming; verify the songs and rights that matter to your station with the relevant rights holders. - List the exact repertoire and recording versions you intend to use.
- Describe the service accurately: an internet, non-interactive radio-style stream, its territories and whether it is monetized.
- Ask each relevant rights holder for written confirmation of the rights, territories, reporting and payment obligations that apply.
- Do not upload or schedule tracks until you have established that you have the necessary permissions.
Choose and size a Linux VPS
AzuraCast documents installation on a VPS or other server and recommends Docker for most users. Its stated requirements are software guidance, not a promise of how many listeners a server will support. Actual resource use depends on factors including the media library and stream or transcoding load.

See AzuraCast’s requirements before ordering. AzuraCast lists one-click installer options for Linode (Akamai), Vultr and DigitalOcean, as well as self-installation, but this is not a current price or performance comparison. Compare provider region relative to your listeners, bandwidth or egress charges, support, available backup or snapshot options, resource sizing and the network ports your chosen installation requires.
Install AzuraCast with Docker
- Create a compatible Linux VPS. Start with a fresh, minimal host and the resources above. Keep administrator access available for installation and updates.
- Connect over SSH and follow the current Docker installation guide. AzuraCast recommends its Docker method for most users and documents an installer, including unattended installation commands suitable for cloud-init. Use the commands and prerequisites currently published in the official Docker guide; do not rely on a copied command from an older tutorial.
- Complete the web setup and create a station. Follow the installer’s current prompts and AzuraCast’s setup flow. Keep administrator credentials private and use a unique, strong password.
- Add only cleared media. Upload recordings for which you have confirmed the required rights. Then configure the station’s playlists and AutoDJ so AzuraCast can schedule and play the library automatically. AzuraCast describes these functions, along with its Icecast-KH broadcasting frontend, in its product documentation.
- Test from outside the VPS. Use the station’s public player or mount point from a separate network or device. Confirm that audio plays and that the stream continues when your setup browser is closed. If it does not, check the station’s playback and playlist configuration, server status and the public address you are testing.
Give the station a domain and HTTPS
Point a domain or subdomain to the server, then configure HTTPS using AzuraCast’s current instructions. AzuraCast’s Let’s Encrypt guide says a domain must point to the installation for certificate setup. Follow its current steps rather than exposing an unsecured administration interface. Keep the admin interface credentials private, and share the public player or stream address—not administrative access—with listeners.

Back up station data
Plan how you will back up both the media library and station configuration, and make sure you know how to restore them. A VPS can fail; a backup that has never been checked is not a recovery plan.

Schedule maintenance deliberately
AzuraCast’s update guide recommends backing up before updating and warns that stations will be briefly offline during updates. Choose a low-listener period, tell listeners about planned interruptions and follow the current update instructions. AzuraCast update guide
Decide what to do if the VPS or network fails
A single VPS can fail or require maintenance, so “24/7” describes the intended schedule, not guaranteed uptime. Availability depends on the host, network, monitoring, backups and recovery arrangements. AzuraCast documents AzuraRelay as an option for distributing a stream or handling a large volume of incoming traffic; whether that extra layer is useful depends on your audience and architecture. What to verify before opening the stream
- Relevant rights holders have confirmed in writing that your planned recordings, internet use and territories are covered.
- AzuraCast is installed on a host that meets its requirements, with capacity monitored as the library and workload grow.
- AutoDJ has eligible tracks and playlists, and the public player works from outside the server.
- Your domain and HTTPS are configured, admin credentials are private, and media and configuration backups have a recovery path.
- You have a maintenance window and a plan for server, network and update interruptions.
