For most eligible Windows 11 PCs, the easiest way to install version 26H2 is through Settings > Windows Update. Microsoft is rolling it out in phases, so the update may not appear on every device at once. If you need bootable media, a virtual-machine image, or a mounted-ISO upgrade, Microsoft also provides a Windows 11 download page.
Choose the right way to get Windows 11 26H2

Install 26H2 through Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available if you want to receive eligible updates as soon as Microsoft offers them.
- When Windows 11 version 26H2 appears, select Download & install.
- Allow the installation to finish and restart the PC when prompted.
Microsoft announced general availability on September 29, 2026, but is expanding the update through a phased rollout. The offer can therefore arrive at different times on eligible devices. Microsoft may also hold it back on a PC with a known compatibility issue. Check the Windows 11 26H2 release-health page for current rollout status, safeguard holds, and known issues.
Why 26H2 can install as a small update
For supported Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices, 26H2 is delivered as an enablement package rather than a full operating-system download. Microsoft says those versions share a servicing branch and codebase; the package activates features already present through monthly servicing updates and requires one restart. The documented prerequisite is KB5124010, dated September 22, 2026, or a later cumulative update. Microsoft describes the package in KB5121794.
Download an ISO or create installation media
Use Microsoft’s Download Windows 11 page if you need installation media, want to install Windows in a virtual machine, or plan to upgrade by mounting an ISO. The ISO is not required for the routine Windows Update installation.

Create bootable USB media
- On Microsoft’s download page, choose the installation-media option and follow the instructions to download and run the Media Creation Tool.
- Connect a blank USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity, then use the tool to create the installation media. The process deletes everything on the drive, so copy off any files you need first.
- Use the completed media to start installation on the target PC, following the on-screen instructions.

Use an ISO
Download the ISO from Microsoft’s Windows 11 page for a virtual machine or to upgrade a running PC by mounting the image and starting setup. Check the device’s compatibility and the manufacturer’s driver guidance before installing. Microsoft’s page distinguishes its x64 Media Creation Tool from the Arm64 ISO option; it directs Arm PC owners to wait for a Windows Update notification and provides separate Arm64 downloads.

If the 26H2 update is not offered
- Check the starting version: the enablement-package route described by Microsoft applies to Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, not every Windows version.
- Install available cumulative updates: KB5124010 from September 22, 2026, or a later cumulative update is the documented prerequisite for eligible 24H2 and 25H2 PCs.
- Allow for the phased rollout: general availability does not mean the offer appears on all devices at the same time.
- Check for a compatibility hold: Microsoft may temporarily withhold the update from devices with known issues. Review the 26H2 release-health page before trying to work around a missing offer.
Back up before using installation media
Back up important files before installing or reinstalling Windows. A USB drive used to create bootable media is erased, so do not use one that contains files you still need. Microsoft’s installation-media guidance covers preparation and backup considerations.
