To run computer science lessons on YouTube around the clock, first enable livestreaming on an eligible channel, then choose between an encoder running on your computer and a cloud service that loops prerecorded lessons. For an unattended stream, cloud playback avoids leaving a computer and home connection on; for live teaching or screen demonstrations, use an encoder such as OBS. In either case, test the stream, protect your stream key, and plan around YouTube’s archive, copyright, and monetization rules.
Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube requires an encoder-livestreaming channel to be verified, to have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and to be operated by a creator who is at least 16. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the lesson launch date: YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- Verify the channel and check for any current livestreaming restriction.
- Enable livestreaming and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Prepare original lessons or confirm you have the rights needed to broadcast any third-party material.
Choose how the lessons will stay live
Run an encoder on your computer
YouTube recommends encoders for screen sharing and more involved productions. Install OBS on a computer, capture the code editor or slides, and send the feed to YouTube. This is a good fit when you want to teach live, change material as you go, or control narration and production directly. The computer and its internet connection must remain active for the stream to continue.
Loop prerecorded lessons in the cloud
For unattended playback, YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for prerecorded video. Gyre describes uploading videos, arranging a playlist, connecting a YouTube account, and scheduling a loop. This avoids running the playback computer locally, but vendor claims about growth or performance are not independent guarantees. Compare the workflow and current terms before choosing any service.

Set up a computer-based stream with OBS
- Prepare the lesson scene. Install OBS and add a screen-capture source for your code editor, slides, or other teaching material. Check that the text is legible at the output resolution and that notifications or private information will not appear on screen. YouTube describes OBS as free, open-source encoder software in its encoder setup guide.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live. Create a stream or schedule one, then open the Stream tab. A scheduled stream can appear to subscribers as upcoming, with an option for viewers to request a notification.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the corresponding OBS streaming settings. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it: YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it to encrypt the connection to Google’s servers. YouTube calls the stream key similar to a password, so share it only with trusted operators and reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s encoder instructions and stream-key guidance.
- Set a sustainable output. Use an upload-speed test, not your advertised download speed, and leave about 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. Include a backup feed in the total if one is configured. YouTube’s encoder table gives 14 Mbps H.264 ingest as a recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps; treat that as a starting reference, not a requirement to force 1080p on a weaker connection. Choose a lower resolution or bitrate if your actual upload cannot sustain the setting with headroom. Refer to YouTube’s recommended encoder settings.
- Test before going public. Use representative sound and movement, check the Live Control Room preview, and open the watch page on a phone. Confirm speech is clear, slides and code remain readable, and audio and video stay synchronized. Monitor stream health rather than assuming that an initial successful connection will remain stable. YouTube’s encoder recommendations and live-streaming guidance cover testing and health checks.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Start streaming from OBS, confirm the preview in Live Control Room, then start the YouTube broadcast if it does not begin automatically. Keep an operator available to respond to connection problems, content matches, or other interruptions.
Plan for continuous playback and saved replays
YouTube automatically archives livestreams that are under 12 hours. A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that window, so do not assume the entire run will be saved as one replay. If archives matter, plan breaks or separate broadcasts and verify the archive behavior in your chosen workflow. YouTube also offers reusable custom stream keys and encoder auto-start and auto-stop settings; test these before relying on an unattended schedule.

This matters for monetization as well as replay access. YouTube’s qualified watch-hours guidance, updated August 12, 2026, says qualifying public watch hours must come from public long-form videos or archived livestreams; hours from unarchived livestreams do not qualify. An uninterrupted broadcast is therefore not a guaranteed way to accumulate qualifying public watch hours.
Protect lesson rights and keep the content meaningfully educational
Copyright applies during livestreams
YouTube scans livestreams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; continued use of third-party material can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even licensed material can be interrupted unless the rights holder has allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Credit, permission, or an educational purpose alone does not guarantee that Content ID will not match material or that the stream can remain uninterrupted. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams.

YouTube’s livestream terms state: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” The terms also place responsibility for requirements that apply in the stream’s territory on the provider: YouTube livestream terms. This setup guidance does not establish India-specific licensing, tax, child-audience, or other legal obligations for an individual creator; check requirements that apply to your circumstances.
Make the channel’s educational value clear
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams. Its policy page records a July 15, 2025 update renaming “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarifying that repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible. Build a real teaching schedule: label topics clearly, provide substantive instruction, and make lessons meaningfully varied. Reusing material without meaningful commentary, modification, or educational value can create monetization problems, while copyright remains a separate issue. Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Livestreaming is unavailable: verify the channel, check for a restriction in the previous 90 days, confirm the creator is at least 16, and allow up to 24 hours after first-time activation.
- OBS will not connect: check that the server URL and stream key match the active stream in Live Control Room. If a key was exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- The stream buffers or drops: check actual upload throughput, lower the output bitrate or resolution, and preserve the recommended upload headroom. Check stream health and test again using representative audio and movement.
- Viewers see a blank or blocked segment: review YouTube’s live copyright notices and remove or resolve matched material. For licensed content, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: check whether the broadcast exceeded 12 hours and review the workflow’s archive behavior. Split a long run into shorter broadcasts if saved archives are important.
