Estimate a 24/7 YouTube stream’s electricity cost by measuring the average power draw of the equipment you keep running, converting that draw into kilowatt-hours (kWh), then applying the marginal tariff for your state, utility, consumer category and current usage slab. There is no single reliable India-wide cost: both equipment consumption and electricity tariffs vary.
Calculate energy use for the streaming period
Use this formula:
Energy (kWh) = average power (watts) × operating hours ÷ 1,000
One electricity “unit” on a typical bill is one kWh. For uninterrupted operation, use the actual number of days in the period:
Monthly energy (kWh) = average watts × 24 × days ÷ 1,000

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, suppose a hypothetical complete setup averages 150 W and runs for a 30-day month. It uses 150 × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 108 kWh, or 108 units. This is an arithmetic example, not a claim about the power use or tariff of a typical stream.
Use average watts, not the encoder bitrate
A stream’s resolution, frame rate and encoding workload can affect how hard equipment works, but a video bitrate is not a measure of electrical power. YouTube’s encoder documentation describes software and standalone hardware encoders and gives video/network configuration guidance; it does not provide a general wattage for a 24/7 stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and encoder settings guide can help identify the streaming arrangement, but do not use their bitrate recommendations as watts.

Measure the whole setup you intend to cost
The best estimate starts with the equipment that will actually remain on. A computer-only reading is not comparable to a reading that includes the router, display, camera or other gear.
- List what stays powered. Include the computer or encoder and, where applicable, continuously powered display, router, camera, lights, capture equipment and audio gear.
- Separate added use from existing use. If the router or computer would be on anyway, decide whether you want the total consumption of the setup or only the extra consumption caused by streaming. For the incremental estimate, count only the additional power attributable to the stream.
- Measure over a representative period. A plug-in electricity usage meter with a kWh display can measure one device’s accumulated consumption. For multiple devices, measure the complete setup safely or measure devices separately and add their energy. One meter reading may not capture every device.
- Record what the reading means. A watt display is an instantaneous power reading; a kWh display records energy over time. A short watt reading can miss changes in CPU or GPU load and idle periods, so treat it as an estimate rather than a guaranteed average.
- Calculate the target period. Use the measured average watts in the formula above, or use the meter’s accumulated kWh over a representative interval and scale it to the operating period.
Do not assume that a particular “24/7 stream” has a standard wattage. YouTube supports different encoder types and stream configurations, while the equipment and workload determine the actual draw.

Find the tariff that applies to your added units
India does not have one universal household electricity rate. The applicable amount depends on the state and distribution utility, consumer category, current monthly usage and tariff slab, subsidy eligibility, and the current tariff schedule. The Ministry of Power states that retail tariffs are determined by the appropriate electricity regulatory commissions, while state governments may provide subsidies to consumer classes. The Ministry of Power’s 10 August 2026 explanation of tariff design also discusses recovery of fixed costs through fixed or demand charges.
- Identify your supply. Check your bill for the state, distribution utility and consumer category, such as domestic or non-domestic.
- Check the current schedule and bill. Use your utility’s applicable tariff order or bill, including the slab structure, subsidy and adjustments. Tariffs and subsidies can change; a cross-state reference is not a substitute for the latest schedule applying to your connection.
- Determine where the extra units fall. If the tariff is slabbed, estimate how the added kWh change the units charged in each relevant slab. Do not multiply all added units by a headline rate if some cross into a different slab.
- Apply the relevant energy charges. For a flat marginal rate, multiply added kWh by that rate. With slabs, calculate the added energy charges using the applicable marginal slab rates and any subsidy treatment.
- Decide whether you want energy charges or the whole bill impact. An energy-only estimate does not automatically include fixed or demand charges, electricity duty, fuel or power-purchase adjustments and other bill items. Apply the treatment shown in your tariff and bill to estimate the total bill change.
Why a state example is not a national estimate
The Central Electricity Authority’s Electricity Tariff & Duty and Average rates of electricity supply in India (2025 compendium) gives state and consumer-category tables, slab rates and subsidy details. For its Tamil Nadu domestic example, the table lists energy charges of ₹4.80 per unit for several lower slabs and ₹6.45 per unit for the 201–250 unit slab before subsidy; the displayed subsidy-adjusted rates differ. Those figures are from the table with a tariff effective date of 1 July 2024. They illustrate the effect of slabs and subsidy; they are not a current rate for every reader or a guarantee of the rate under later orders. See the CEA 2025 tariff compendium and verify the current schedule for your connection.

Work through a hypothetical bill estimate
Suppose a hypothetical setup averages 150 W for 30 days, as in the energy example, and suppose—only to demonstrate the arithmetic—that the added units all fall under a flat marginal energy rate of ₹6 per unit. The estimated energy charge would be 108 × ₹6 = ₹648. Neither the assumed wattage nor the assumed rate is a claim about a real household, tariff or typical streaming setup.
If your added use crosses tariff slabs, replace the single ₹6 assumption with the relevant rates for the units added in each slab. If you want the entire bill increase, account separately for applicable fixed or demand charges, duties, adjustments and subsidies. The Ministry’s regulatory explanation and the CEA tables are useful context, but your utility’s current schedule and your own bill determine the applicable treatment.

Compare streaming arrangements on equal terms
If you are deciding whether to keep a PC or encoder running, compare complete setups rather than isolated devices. Use the same measurement period and tariff assumptions for each option.
- Average power: measured watts for all equipment included in the arrangement.
- Stream workload: resolution, frame rate and encoding arrangement.
- Included devices: note whether the measurement includes the router, display, camera, lighting and other continuously powered equipment.
- Tariff basis: state the consumer category, marginal slab and subsidy assumption used.
- Results: show estimated monthly kWh and energy-charge cost separately from any whole-bill estimate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. This removes the stream computer from your home power estimate, though it does not mean other home equipment you keep on uses no electricity.
Quick Recap
- Nothing has to stay on at home to keep the StreamNeo stream running.
- Uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps, with one flat price per slot and no quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required (one free day per account).
