Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD, add MetaMod:Source and SourceMod, use L4DToolZ to raise the server’s client ceiling to at least 20, then use SuperVersus or a maintained equivalent to set both team limits to 10. Finally, run Versus mode, publish the game port through your firewall/router, and test the exact plugin and map combination you intend to host.
What a 10v10 server actually needs
Left 4 Dead 2’s stock Versus configuration is designed for the normal player count. A server that accepts 10 survivors and 10 infected therefore needs two separate changes: a larger server-wide client limit and larger per-team limits. Raising only one of them leaves the other as the bottleneck.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Dedicated server files: Install the Left 4 Dead 2 server through SteamCMD (application ID 222860).
- Extension framework: MetaMod:Source must load before SourceMod and gameplay plugins.
- Player-count extension: L4DToolZ exposes the maximum-client and maximum-player controls needed to exceed the stock ceiling.
- Team-management plugin: SuperVersus, or a current maintained equivalent, sets survivor and infected limits.
- Versus startup: Start the server in Versus mode rather than relying on a lobby’s default.
- Network access: Publish the game port over both TCP and UDP and permit it through the host firewall.
The practical target is 20 total clients: 10 survivors plus 10 infected. A community operator reported 20-player 10v10 as stable in that particular environment, but that is an experience report, not a universal benchmark or a Valve guarantee. Counts above 20 were not time-stable in that report.
Plan the installation before changing files
Choose where the server will run
A home machine gives you direct control over plugins, configuration files, RCON and firewall rules, but you must handle port forwarding, restarts, power outages and your own upstream bandwidth. A rented server or VPS generally removes the router-forwarding task and can automate restarts, while adding provider restrictions and a recurring charge. Confirm that any host permits MetaMod:Source and SourceMod and offers enough CPU and memory headroom for 20 active slots before you install.
#1 Best Overall
- On day one, Left 4 Dead 2 features more co-operative campaigns, more campaigns and maps for the versus game modes than the original Left 4 Dead did, plus support for Survival Mode right out of the box.
- Left 4 Dead 2 features quality co-op action gaming from the makers of Half-life, Portal, Team Fortress and Counter-Strike.
- Updated “AI Director 2.0" technology expands players’ ability to customize level layout, world objects, weather, and lighting to reflect different times of day, creating fresh gameplay every time.
- Put a whole slew of melee weapons including axes, chainsaws, frying pans and baseball bats to use which allow you to get up close with the zombies.
- The game features four different survivors, a new storyline and new dialog.
Decide whether you need a Versus-only instance
If the machine will run only 10v10 games, configure its startup mode as Versus and restrict the allowed game types. If you also want Campaign, Scavenge or other modes, leave those modes available and change the mode when launching a map. A dedicated 10v10 instance is easier to troubleshoot because every test uses the same ruleset.
Prepare an isolated server directory
Download SteamCMD for your operating system and create a server directory outside the SteamCMD installation directory. Keeping the game files separate makes updates, backups and clean reinstalls safer. You will later place server.cfg in left4dead2/cfg/ and copy extension and plugin folders into the server’s left4dead2 tree.
Install the Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated server with SteamCMD
The Steam Community installation procedure identifies application ID 222860 for the Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated server. In SteamCMD, point the install directory at the folder you created, authenticate anonymously, validate the download, and then exit.
force_install_dir <your-server-directory>
login anonymous
app_update 222860 validate
quit
Replace <your-server-directory> with the actual path on your machine. Do not place angle brackets in the real command. The validate option checks the downloaded files; it can take longer than an ordinary update. Run the same app_update 222860 validate sequence when you need to repair or refresh the installation.
Verify the expected tree
After SteamCMD finishes, confirm that the installation contains the left4dead2 directory and its cfg subdirectory. If that directory is missing, SteamCMD was pointed at the wrong location or the update did not complete. Fix the path before installing extensions; otherwise files may be copied into a different Steam library and never load.
Create a server.cfg that is easy to audit
Create left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg. Put one console variable (cvar) on each line. Quote a value when it contains spaces, and avoid copying settings from unrelated game modes until the basic 10v10 configuration works.

The two L4DToolZ variables shown above represent the 20-client target; exact behavior can vary by extension build, so check the documentation shipped with the build you install. Likewise, a maintained team-management fork may use equivalent cvar names. If its documentation uses different names, use those names instead of defining variables that the plugin does not recognize.
Protect the configuration
- Use a long, unique RCON password; never reuse an account or website password.
- Do not publish the password in a public configuration paste or launch script.
- Keep a backup of the working file before changing map, tick or plugin settings.
- When diagnosing a failure, comment out optional settings and add them back one at a time.
Install the extension and plugin stack in the correct order
Server-side add-ons depend on one another. Install the loader first, then the scripting framework, then the gameplay and administration plugins.
- Install MetaMod:Source. Copy its required files into the server’s
left4dead2tree exactly as the package structure specifies. - Install SourceMod. Place its
addonsand configuration directories in the sameleft4dead2tree. SourceMod depends on MetaMod:Source being present. - Install L4DToolZ. Copy the extension files and any supplied configuration files. This extension provides the controls that remove the normal client ceiling.
- Install SuperVersus or a maintained equivalent. Copy its plugin and configuration files only after SourceMod is loading.
- Restart the dedicated server. A full restart is safer than attempting to hot-load every dependency.
- Check the plugin list. Use SourceMod’s plugin-list command from the server console or RCON and confirm that the expected extensions and plugins are listed without load errors.
Do not mix files from unrelated releases. A plugin can appear in the directory yet fail because its extension dependency is absent, its binary targets a different server build, or an older configuration variable has been removed. Treat the plugin-list output and server log as the source of truth.
Raise the maximum client count with L4DToolZ
Install L4DToolZ before attempting to add the tenth player to either team. The extension exposes sv_setmax and sv_maxplayers; set the server-wide capacity to at least 20. A value lower than 20 makes a true 10v10 match impossible even if the team plugin reports limits of 10.

- Restart after installing L4DToolZ.
- Use the server console or RCON to inspect the values of
sv_setmaxandsv_maxplayers. - Set both to 20 if the extension build expects both controls.
- Watch the log for an extension-load error or an unknown-command response.
- Reconnect or start a fresh lobby after changing the capacity; an existing session may retain its original client limit.
If the commands are unknown, L4DToolZ is not loaded, is in the wrong directory, or is incompatible with the current server build. Recheck the installation order and the extension’s own release notes rather than repeatedly changing team cvars.
Set survivor and infected limits to 10
SuperVersus documents survivor-limit support up to 18 and advertises configurations up to 18v18. Its documentation also states that the plugin alone will not allow more than eight players and requires an extension for larger totals. That is why L4DToolZ and SuperVersus are complementary: one expands the server ceiling, while the other manages team sizes.

- Set across 4 massive campaigns
- Game creates a unique and dramatic experience based on players' actions

Configure the two teams
- Confirm that SuperVersus or your maintained fork appears in the SourceMod plugin list.
- Set
l4d_survivor_limit 10. - Set
l4d_infected_limit 10. - Restart or reload the plugin as its documentation requires.
- Start a Versus map and verify that the server creates room for 10 survivors and 10 infected rather than reverting to the stock values.
Do not set 18 merely because the plugin supports it. More slots increase CPU, memory, network and gameplay demands. Ten per side is the requested target; use higher limits only after measuring your own instance and confirming that every plugin in the stack supports them.
Account for plugin forks
SuperVersus has existed in multiple releases and community-maintained forks. A fork may rename cvars, move configuration files or require a different extension. Use the cvar names documented by the exact package you installed. If the plugin reports a maximum of eight despite a 20-client L4DToolZ setting, the team plugin is either not loaded or is the wrong build.
Start the server explicitly in Versus mode
Set the initial mode to Versus so the server does not boot into Campaign or another mode. A containerized deployment uses an environment setting such as DEFAULT_MODE=versus; a native SRCDS launch can include +mp_gamemode versus.
+mp_gamemode versus
The launch argument belongs in the command that starts the dedicated server, not as a line copied blindly into server.cfg. You can also set mp_gamemode "versus" in the configuration when your launch method reads that file at startup. Test one approach at a time so you know which layer controls the mode.
Keep mode changes predictable
- Use a known Versus map for the first test instead of a custom campaign with its own scripts.
- After a mode change, restart or change the map according to the server’s normal procedure.
- If the server returns to Campaign, inspect the launch command and any container environment variables before changing player limits.
Open the network path
The default Left 4 Dead 2 game port identified in the Steam installation guide is 27015. A home-hosted server must receive that traffic through the router and host firewall. Publish both TCP and UDP for the selected port unless your deployment documentation explicitly specifies another arrangement.
Home-server checklist
- Give the server machine a stable local address so the router rule does not point at a different device later.
- Forward the chosen game port from the router to that local address.
- Create host-firewall rules that allow the server process and the forwarded TCP and UDP traffic.
- If you changed the external port, record it as
public-address:portfor players. - Test from a network outside the home LAN; a local test can pass even when the router’s public forwarding is wrong.
For Docker bridge mode, publish the client and host ports consistently. The container documentation warns that the client-facing and host-side ports must match for the advertised setup and documents TCP and UDP publication. A port mismatch can make the server appear to start normally while outside players receive a timeout.

Firewall and carrier-grade NAT limitations
If forwarding is correct but outside players cannot connect, check whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound traffic. In that situation, the router may have no publicly reachable address to forward. A rented server with a public address can avoid that specific limitation. Do not expose RCON on an unnecessary public port; keep remote administration restricted to the game service’s supported mechanism and a strong password.
Make the server discoverable
Players can reach a working server in several ways:
- Steam Group: Associate the server with a group so members can find it through the group’s server listing.
- In-game browser: Search the community or server browser after the instance has registered.
- Forced dedicated selection: From a lobby set to Best Available Dedicated, run
mm_dedicated_force_servers ip:portwith the server’s public address and port. - Direct connection: Use
connect ip:portfrom the developer console.
Use the public address, not the server’s private LAN address, when inviting players outside your home network. If direct connection works but browser discovery does not, the game service is reachable and the remaining issue is registration or listing, not the 10v10 plugin configuration.
Validate the setup with a controlled test
Do not judge the configuration by whether the server process starts. Validate capacity, team assignment, mode, networking and long-session behavior separately.
- Loader test: Confirm MetaMod:Source, SourceMod, L4DToolZ and the team plugin in the plugin list.
- Capacity test: Join with several clients and verify that the server accepts more than the stock count.
- Team test: Continue joining until the survivor and infected counts approach 10 each; watch for rejected connections or automatic spectators.
- Mode test: Confirm the map is running Versus and that the expected Versus rules apply.
- Remote test: Have a player outside the host network connect through the public address.
- Restart test: Stop and start the server, then verify that the same mode, cvars and plugins load without manual intervention.
- Session test: Run a complete map and monitor logs, CPU, memory, tick behavior and network stability.
Test the exact map rotation, plugin builds, hardware and network path you plan to use. A configuration that survives a short local test may still fail during a full 20-player session.

The server caps at the normal player count
- Check that L4DToolZ is loaded, not merely copied into the directory.
- Inspect the console for an unknown
sv_setmaxorsv_maxplayerscommand. - Set the capacity after the extension loads and restart.
- Make sure a startup script or container variable is not overwriting the value.
Team limits remain at the default
- Confirm that SuperVersus or its maintained equivalent appears in SourceMod’s plugin list.
- Use the cvar names required by that exact fork.
- Check whether the plugin reports a missing extension; the team plugin cannot exceed eight total players by itself.
- Reload the plugin or restart after editing its configuration.
Players cannot connect from the internet
- Verify the public address and port shown in the invitation.
- Check both router forwarding and host-firewall rules for TCP and UDP.
- For Docker, compare the published host and container ports.
- Test from a separate network to rule out router loopback behavior.
- Ask the ISP whether inbound traffic is blocked by carrier-grade NAT.
The server starts in the wrong mode
- Inspect the native launch command for
+mp_gamemode versus. - For a container, check the mode environment setting such as
DEFAULT_MODE=versus. - Look for another configuration file or startup wrapper that changes the mode after launch.
The server becomes unstable with a full roster
Reduce optional plugins and run the same map with fewer clients to isolate the cause. Record CPU and memory use, tick settings, map rotation and network conditions. The community report supporting 20-player stability applies only to its author’s environment, so treat your own measurements as the deciding evidence. If the instance is stable at 20 but not above 20, keep the ceiling at 20 rather than assuming the larger value is safe.

Self-hosting versus rented hosting
| Decision factor | Home or self-managed server | Rented server or VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Plugin and configuration control | Full control over MetaMod:Source, SourceMod, L4DToolZ and team plugins, subject to your own maintenance. | Depends on provider policy; confirm that server extensions and custom plugins are allowed. |
| Port forwarding | You must configure the router and host firewall. | Usually handled by the provider’s public network configuration. |
| Uptime and restarts | Depends on your power, internet connection and restart scripts. | Often easier to automate, but behavior depends on the host’s control panel or service. |
| Player latency | Good for players near your home connection; distant players may have higher latency. | You can select a region when the provider offers multiple locations. |
| 20-slot headroom | You supply enough CPU, memory and upstream capacity and monitor them yourself. | Choose a plan with documented headroom for 20 clients; do not infer capacity from a server’s name alone. |
| RCON and firewall access | Direct access, with the responsibility to secure it. | Access and firewall controls vary by provider and may be restricted. |
For either option, verify current support for a 20-slot L4D2 instance, the region your players need, restart behavior and extension compatibility before committing.
Operational security and maintenance
Secure administration
Set a strong RCON password if you need remote administration. Weak passwords invite dictionary attacks. Limit who receives the password, rotate it when staff changes, and remove unused administrative accounts or permissions.
Update deliberately
Back up server.cfg, plugin configurations and any custom scripts before updating the game or extensions. Update one layer at a time: server files, MetaMod:Source, SourceMod, then gameplay plugins. Restart and check the plugin list after each change so an incompatibility is easy to identify.
Keep a rollback path
Save the last known-good extension and plugin packages with the date they were used. If a game update causes load errors, restore the known-good combination while you investigate instead of changing several components simultaneously.
10v10 launch checklist
- SteamCMD installed the dedicated server with
app_update 222860 validate. server.cfgis inleft4dead2/cfg/, with one cvar per line.- MetaMod:Source loads before SourceMod.
- L4DToolZ loads and the server-wide ceiling is at least 20.
- SuperVersus or an equivalent maintained plugin loads.
- Survivor and infected limits are both set to 10 using the correct cvars for that build.
- Versus mode is selected at startup.
- The selected port, normally 27015, is allowed through the firewall and forwarded over TCP and UDP where required.
- Players have a working discovery or direct-connect method.
- RCON uses a unique, strong password.
- A full-map test confirms stability on the intended hardware, map rotation and network path.
Once every item passes, the server is configured for a genuine 10v10 target rather than a lobby that merely displays larger numbers. Keep the limit at 20 until your own long-session tests demonstrate that a higher value is reliable.
