This guide covers 57Ajay/Scout, the GitHub project that gives AI agents remote VM control, including shell execution and file operations. “Scout” also refers to unrelated products, including Microsoft Scout and Docker Scout; the steps below do not apply to those tools.
For a safer first deployment, use Docker Compose with a narrowly scoped project-directory mount, a strong bearer token, and no Docker socket unless the task specifically requires host Docker access. Then configure Scout’s filesystem roots and command policy explicitly: the project documents permissive defaults that can otherwise give an approved agent broad access.

Choose a deployment path based on the access Scout needs
The two documented deployment options differ in what the running Scout process can reach. Isolation depends on the privileges and mounts you grant, not just on whether Scout runs in a container.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

|---|---|---|
| Native build | Runs with the installing user’s access to files, Docker, and Kubernetes. Filesystem reach is bounded by that account’s permissions, unless further restricted. | You need a native installation and can run Scout as a dedicated, low-privilege account with carefully limited access. |
| Docker Compose | Can mount a selected host directory read-write. The documented example can also mount the host Docker socket and kubeconfig; the repository warns that the socket mount is root-equivalent on the host. | You want to scope file access to a specific directory and can omit unnecessary host integrations. |
Neither option is automatically a sandbox. Native Scout inherits the user’s access, while Docker Compose mounts can expose host resources. For a first run, Compose with only the project directory mounted is the more directly scoped starting point; do not add host Docker or Kubernetes access unless the workflow needs it.

Set up Scout with Docker Compose
The following sequence follows the project’s documented quick start. Choose a directory containing only files the agent should be able to access, and use a long, unique token.
-
Clone the Scout repository and enter the cloned directory.

Inspect the Compose configuration. Remove the host Docker socket mount unless the task requires managing host containers; likewise, omit kubeconfig and other sensitive mounts that Scout does not need. The repository explicitly describes the Docker socket mount as root-equivalent on the host.
-
Build and start the service with
docker compose up -d --build. -
Before allowing access beyond a trusted local environment, configure TLS using the bundled Caddy option or Scout’s certificate settings. Keep the token out of URLs, logs, screenshots, and publicly accessible configuration files.

Constrain filesystem and command access
Scout’s project documentation says its filesystem roots default to ["/"] and its command policy defaults to allow. It warns that with those settings “an approved agent can do anything you can.” Change both rather than assuming the container mount alone provides sufficient restriction.

Limit filesystem roots
In Scout’s configuration, set filesystem.roots to the smallest directory the task requires, such as the project workspace. A narrow root reduces accidental reads and writes outside the work area. Also check container mounts: a broad or sensitive host mount can expose data regardless of how carefully you intended the workflow to be scoped.
Choose a command policy deliberately
For a cautious first run, set policy.default: ask so commands require approval, or use policy.default: deny and add explicit allow rules for the commands needed. The documented dangerous-command guard sends listed destructive patterns for approval, but it does not make the default-allow policy safe: ordinary commands may still run immediately. Treat approval prompts as a control to review, not a replacement for narrow filesystem and command permissions.
Review protected paths
The project lists sensitive locations and patterns—including .ssh, .aws, .gnupg, kubeconfig, *.pem, *.key, .env*, /etc/shadow, and sudoers—for escalation. The documentation says access, including reads, is escalated. Review the list and add organization-specific secrets or credential locations that matter in your environment.

Scout’s documentation says every endpoint requires the bearer token, including health and dashboard routes. Authentication is not a reason to expose the service without transport protection: configure TLS before external exposure, use a strong token, and avoid sending it over plaintext connections. Where practical, configure allowed_ips to restrict which callers can reach Scout.

Keep the token in a protected environment or configuration file rather than sharing it with agent instructions or committing it to a repository. Anyone who obtains the token may be able to call authenticated control endpoints, so rotate it if it is exposed.
Build and run Scout natively
The repository documents a native build that requires Go 1.23 or newer. This option does not isolate Scout from the installing account: the process can access files and services available to that user, including Docker or Kubernetes credentials where present.
-
Install Go 1.23 or newer.
-
Clone the repository and enter its directory.
-
Build the binary with

Start Scout with
./scout --config scout.yaml.
The repository also documents a one-shot installer that uses sudo to install a service running as the user’s account. That use of elevated privileges is for installation; it does not make the resulting service isolated. Prefer a dedicated low-privilege account and avoid giving it credentials or host access unrelated to the task.
What the project documentation does—and does not—establish
The setup commands, defaults, and security controls described here are documented by the 57Ajay/Scout project itself. They are not evidence of an independent security audit or validation. Review the repository’s current configuration and deployment instructions for the version you use, because defaults and options can change.
