To connect OBS on Windows to YouTube Live, copy the Stream URL and Stream key for your intended stream from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter them in OBS, then start streaming. Prefer the RTMPS URL shown by YouTube when OBS supports it. There is no separate India-only URL in the official YouTube instructions covered here, so use the URL displayed for your own stream rather than a hard-coded address.
Before you configure OBS
Confirm that your channel can go live before troubleshooting encoder settings. YouTube says a creator needs a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its general guidance also says a person must be at least 16 to live stream. Availability and account eligibility apply in India as elsewhere. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

You need OBS installed on your Windows computer and access to the YouTube channel’s Live Control Room. Treat the stream key as a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not share it or include it in screenshots or public posts.

In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.

Open Stream. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to broadcast. If you have streamed before, YouTube may load earlier settings or a previous key; check that the selected stream is the right one.

Copy that stream’s Stream URL and Stream key. Use the values shown in Live Control Room for this stream; do not substitute an address found elsewhere.

Open OBS and go to its streaming configuration. The exact menu labels can vary by OBS version.

If OBS offers a YouTube service preset, select it and follow its prompt to enter the stream key.

If you need a custom service, choose the custom option, paste the copied YouTube URL into the server field, and paste the matching key into the stream-key field. Keep the URL and key paired with the same stream.

Apply or save the settings. Start streaming from OBS.

For RTMPS, open the lock icon beside Stream URL in Live Control Room to reveal and copy the RTMPS address. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which it defines as “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection.” If OBS provides a YouTube RTMPS preset, use it and enter the key when prompted. Otherwise, use the RTMPS URL YouTube displays in the custom server field. Details: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

For a scheduled event, starting OBS sends the feed but does not necessarily publish the event to viewers immediately. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live. To finish, stop sending from OBS and select End Stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose stable encoder settings
The URL and key establish the connection; resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate affect the outgoing video. YouTube recommends choosing settings that your upload connection can sustain reliably, testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. Its encoder can be detected automatically, and YouTube transcodes for viewers on different devices and network conditions. Recommended bitrates are guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection can carry them.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations accessed in 2026, not India-specific thresholds. Pick a setting based on a reliable upload connection, allowing room for normal network variation rather than treating the recommended figure as a speed guarantee.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds that should not exceed 4 seconds.

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced guidance gives 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio, with 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1.

For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709. These encoder recommendations are not prerequisites for entering a server URL and key.

Fix common connection problems

OBS will not connect: Recopy the URL and key from Live Control Room for the intended stream. Check for typing or paste errors, a changed stream, or a key that has been reset.

RTMPS SSL error: Make sure the server address is the RTMPS URL, not an RTMP address. YouTube suggests trying port 443 if the URL otherwise appears correct; start with the URL YouTube supplies and change the port only if needed.

Connection times out: Verify the displayed server URL and that your installed encoder supports RTMPS.

No preview appears: Confirm OBS is sending, then allow time for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, select Go live there after the preview arrives.

Video is unstable or stream health is poor: Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to fit the stable upload available; test with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health. A brief speed-test result does not prove the connection can sustain a live feed.

Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification, age eligibility, and any live-streaming restrictions before changing OBS settings.
Reset an exposed or outdated stream key
If a key may have been exposed, or OBS still uses a key that no longer works, a channel owner or manager can replace it in Live Control Room. Open Stream, find Stream key, choose Reset, then copy the newly generated key into OBS before the next broadcast. Editors and viewers cannot reset the key. Resetting invalidates the old credential, so update any encoder that used it. See Manage live stream settings.
