Run timedatectl list-timezones to find an IANA Region/City name, apply it with sudo timedatectl set-timezone Region/City, and run timedatectl again to verify the result. Timezone selection changes how the system displays local time; it does not replace network clock synchronization.

What a Linux timezone setting controls
Linux keeps system time as a point on the global timeline and applies a timezone when it displays that time as local time. The timezone determines the UTC offset, daylight-saving transitions, and the local date shown by commands and many applications. A server configured for America/Chicago, for example, displays a different local hour than one configured for Europe/London, even when both have the same underlying UTC time.

This distinction matters when diagnosing a “wrong time” report. If the displayed hour is consistently offset by a whole number of hours, the timezone is probably wrong. If the clock drifts, jumps, or disagrees with other hosts in UTC, the synchronization service needs attention instead. Set the timezone first, then check time synchronization separately.
Before changing the setting
Confirm that you have administrative access
Changing the system timezone requires root privileges on a normal CentOS installation. Use an account allowed to run commands through sudo, or open a root shell according to your organization’s policy. The commands below do not require you to stop applications, but services that cache timezone data may need their own restart if they do not observe the change immediately.

Identify the host’s release and current state
Start with the status command:
timedatectl
Its output includes the local time, universal (UTC) time, the configured time zone, and whether network time synchronization is active. Record the current output before changing anything; it gives you a simple comparison for verification and troubleshooting.
On a minimal image where timedatectl is not installed or systemd is not running, do not assume that a command intended for another environment will work. Check the distribution and init system first, then use the release’s documented time-configuration method. CentOS 8 and RHEL 9 use the systemd-based workflow described here.
Set a timezone with timedatectl
1. List valid IANA timezone names
Linux timezone names come from the public IANA time zone database and use the Region/City format. List the names available on the server:
timedatectl list-timezones
The list can be long. Filter it by a city or region when you know part of the name:
timedatectl list-timezones | grep Chicago
Use the exact spelling and capitalization returned by the list. Prefer a named city such as America/Chicago rather than a fixed numeric offset. A city-based IANA zone contains the rules needed when daylight-saving regulations change; an offset such as UTC−06:00 does not describe those transitions.

2. Apply the selected zone
Pass the complete name to set-timezone:
sudo timedatectl set-timezone America/Chicago
Replace America/Chicago with the value appropriate for the server’s operating location or the time convention required by your application. The command changes the host’s persistent system timezone; it is not merely a display option for the current shell.

Run the status command again:
timedatectl
Check the Time zone line and compare the reported local time with the expected time for that zone. Also note the NTP or network-synchronization status. A correct zone paired with an unsynchronized clock is a different problem from an incorrect zone.
One-command, repeatable changes
For a scripted deployment, make the desired zone an explicit variable and verify it after applying the change:
ZONE="America/Chicago"
sudo timedatectl set-timezone "$ZONE"
timedatectl show --property=Timezone --value
The final command prints the configured zone, making it suitable for an automation check. Keep the value in your host configuration rather than deriving it from an administrator’s laptop; a server’s location and an operator’s location are often different.
CentOS and RHEL version considerations
| Platform or situation | Recommended approach | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| CentOS 8 | timedatectl list-timezones, then sudo timedatectl set-timezone Region/City |
This is the standard systemd workflow for the release. |
| RHEL 9 | Use timedatectl set-timezone Region/City and verify with timedatectl |
Clock synchronization is handled separately by chronyd from the chrony package. |
| CentOS 7 | Use timedatectl on a system running systemd |
A vendor guide reports problems for its own replication products when /etc/localtime was edited directly, and recommends timedatectl instead. That warning is product-specific, but it is a reason to avoid legacy edits when the systemd command is available. |
| CentOS 6 or another legacy installation | Follow that release’s documented timezone procedure | Older practice commonly replaced or symlinked /etc/localtime directly. Do not copy an old procedure onto a newer system without checking its init and packaging model. |
Command names and output labels can vary between releases and stripped-down images. If a command is rejected, check the installed release documentation instead of forcing a file-level workaround.

Timezone selection is not clock synchronization
What timedatectl changes
timedatectl set-timezone selects the rules used to convert the system clock to local time. It does not contact a time server and does not correct a drifting hardware or virtual clock.
How chronyd fits in on RHEL 9 and later
On RHEL 9 and later, the chrony package provides chronyd, the service used for network time synchronization. Inspect the overall state with:
timedatectl
Look at the network time synchronization fields. If the timezone is correct but the reported UTC and local times are wrong, investigate the chrony service, its sources, and network access rather than changing the timezone again.
Manual time setting is a fallback
timedatectl set-time can set the clock manually, but Red Hat’s guidance is to prefer chrony-based synchronization. Manual adjustment is appropriate only when you understand why synchronization is unavailable and have an operational reason to make a one-time correction. It does not provide the ongoing correction that a configured time service supplies.
Runtime versus permanent chrony changes
Commands issued through chronyc affect the running chronyd process. Red Hat documents that such changes are not permanent and can be lost when chronyd restarts. Put lasting configuration in /etc/chrony.conf, then restart or reload the service according to your release’s procedure. This persistence rule applies to synchronization settings, not to the timezone selected with timedatectl.

Why directly editing /etc/localtime is usually the wrong first choice
Legacy Linux instructions often create a symbolic link or copy a zone file over /etc/localtime. That file is involved in the system’s timezone behavior, but hand-editing it bypasses the systemd interface and makes automation and verification less consistent. It can also conflict with software that expects the distribution’s supported configuration path.
A Cirata guide specifically warns that direct /etc/localtime changes caused problems with that vendor’s replication products on CentOS 7 and recommends timedatectl. This is not proof that every application will fail, but it is a concrete compatibility warning. Use the supported timedatectl command wherever it is available, and reserve a file-level method for a documented legacy environment that lacks the command.
If you inherit a host that was configured by hand, do not “fix” it by deleting the file while services are running. First capture timedatectl output, identify the distribution release, and schedule a controlled change. Confirm application log timestamps after the change.

Changing one server interactively
- Run
timedatectland record the current timezone and synchronization status. - Run
timedatectl list-timezones | grep <city-or-region>to find the exact IANA name. - Apply it with
sudo timedatectl set-timezone <Region/City>. - Run
timedatectlagain and verify both the timezone line and the displayed local time. - Check a representative application log or scheduled task if local-time behavior is operationally important.
Changing a fleet consistently
Define the expected zone in inventory or host metadata, not in a free-form shell prompt. Have automation run the set command with elevated privileges and then read back the value for an assertion. Treat a mismatch as a failed deployment rather than silently continuing. Apply the same policy to every host in a service cluster unless the software explicitly requires a different convention.
For distributed systems, consider using UTC for logs and machine-to-machine data while setting a local zone only where operators or a legacy application require it. A timezone change can alter the date shown in reports and cron-related workflows even though the underlying UTC instant remains the same, so coordinate it with application owners.
Best Value
Changing a remote host safely
Use an existing secure administrative session and keep a second access path available. The timezone command normally does not terminate the session, but a separate clock correction, service restart, or automation step might affect monitoring and scheduled jobs. Capture the before-and-after output and record the exact IANA name used.
Troubleshooting a failed or apparently ineffective change
“Unknown command: timedatectl”
The host may be a legacy CentOS release, a container without systemd, or a minimal image missing the relevant tools. Identify the release and init system, then use its supported documentation. Do not assume that installing a systemd utility inside a container will make the host’s timezone persistent.
“Invalid time zone” or an empty search
Use the complete name returned by timedatectl list-timezones. Check capitalization, the slash, and spelling. If a desired location is absent, the image may have an incomplete or outdated timezone-data package; update it through your normal operating-system process before selecting a zone.
Permission denied
Run the setter with sudo or have an administrator perform it. Do not loosen file permissions on timezone data to avoid privilege controls.
The timezone line is correct, but the hour is wrong
Separate the two possibilities: an unsynchronized system clock and an application-specific interpretation. Check timedatectl for network synchronization, then inspect chronyd and its configuration on RHEL 9 and later. If the OS time is correct, check whether the application uses UTC, a bundled timezone database, or a separate container setting.
Logs still show the old zone
Some processes read timezone data at startup. Compare a new system command’s output with a newly written log entry. If only an already-running service is stale, restart that service during an approved maintenance window and verify its logs afterward. Do not restart unrelated services merely because the host timezone changed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsScheduled jobs moved unexpectedly
Changing local time can change the apparent wall-clock time of jobs configured in local time, especially around daylight-saving transitions. Review schedules that run near midnight or a transition boundary, and document whether each job is intended to follow local time or UTC before applying the change in production.
Verification checklist
- Exact zone: The
Time zonefield shows the intended IANARegion/Cityvalue. - Local time: The displayed date and time match a trusted reference for that location.
- UTC time: The universal-time value is sensible and consistent with another trusted host.
- Synchronization: Network time status is understood; a timezone change has not been mistaken for an NTP repair.
- Persistence: After a controlled reboot or service restart, the configured timezone remains the intended one.
- Applications: New log entries, reports, and time-based jobs use the expected convention.
- Documentation: The host inventory records the exact zone and the date of the change.
Command reference
| Purpose | Command | Result |

Shows local time, UTC, timezone, and synchronization status. |
| List every available zone | timedatectl list-timezones |
Prints IANA timezone names installed on the host. |
| Filter the list | timedatectl list-timezones | grep Chicago |
Shows matching names so you can choose an exact value. |
| Set the zone | sudo timedatectl set-timezone America/Chicago |
Persistently selects the specified local-time rules. |
| Read back only the zone | timedatectl show --property=Timezone --value |
Prints the configured timezone, useful in scripts. |
Bottom line for CentOS administrators
On CentOS 8 and systemd-based CentOS 7 installations, and on RHEL 9, choose a valid IANA Region/City name and set it with sudo timedatectl set-timezone. Verify with timedatectl, then handle chrony synchronization as a separate task. Avoid direct /etc/localtime edits unless a documented legacy environment leaves no supported alternative, and always test logs and scheduled jobs after a production change.
