To host Cottage Witch, use the Forge edition for Minecraft 1.19.2, run it with Java 17, and allocate at least 6 GB of RAM for the original pack. Cottage Witch: Recast uses the same Minecraft and Forge versions but is safer to start at 8 GB, with 9 GB sensible for a public or larger server. A managed host can install the pack in one click; self-hosting requires the matching Forge installer, server pack, Java runtime, firewall rule and network configuration.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Confirm which Cottage Witch pack you are hosting
“Cottage Witch” can refer to the original pack or the separate Cottage Witch: Recast project. Both versions in the available documentation target Minecraft 1.19.2 and Forge. They are not interchangeable: players must install the same pack edition, Minecraft version, loader and pack version as the server.

| Original Cottage Witch | 1.19.2 | Forge | 6 GB | BisectHosting lists 6 GB; Apex Hosting gives 6–8 GB depending on player count. |
| Cottage Witch: Recast | 1.19.2 | Forge | 8 GB | CurseForge lists 4 GB for five or fewer players and 8 GB for fewer than 10; StickyPiston recommends starting at 8 GB and 9 GB for public servers. The 1.5.4 file page states 6–8 GB. |
The latest Recast file identified in the available listings is Cottage Witch Recast-1.5.4.zip, uploaded September 11, 2024. That date is not a guarantee that it remains current in 2026, so check the project’s CurseForge files tab immediately before installation. The listed 1.5.4 server pack is 410.3 MB.
What you need before installation
- A pack decision: choose Original Cottage Witch or Recast and record the exact file version.
- Forge for Minecraft 1.19.2: use the Forge build specified on the pack’s files page. The exact build number is not established in the available listings, so do not substitute a random 1.19.2 Forge build until you have checked the pack files.
- Java 17: Forge 1.19.2 is generally run with Java 17. A Forge forum response warns that generated launch scripts can select a different installed Java, so verify the binary the script actually starts.
- Memory: reserve 6 GB for a small Original server and 8 GB for Recast; leave additional memory for the operating system.
- Storage: keep room for the 410.3 MB Recast server archive, the unpacked server, world data, logs and backups. World size grows continuously.
- Network access: managed hosts provide an address; a home server normally needs a firewall exception and, when players are outside your home network, port forwarding.
- Matching client files: every player needs the same modpack edition and version. A vanilla client or a different Forge/mod version will not reliably connect.
Managed hosting: the quickest route
A managed Minecraft host avoids installing Java, configuring a service and exposing a residential connection. Providers that list Cottage Witch generally offer a modpack installer. Labels differ by control panel, but the workflow is usually the following.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
- Open the host’s modpack or Minecraft version selector.
- Search for
Cottage Witch. If two entries appear, select the correct Original or Recast project. - Choose the pack’s Minecraft 1.19.2 Forge entry. Do not select a similarly named pack on another Minecraft version.
- Set the memory allocation before the first start: 6 GB for a small Original server, 8 GB for Recast, and 9 GB if you expect a public or larger Recast group.
- Install the pack and wait for the panel to finish downloading and unpacking the server files.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA when the panel presents the option, then restart. One-click instructions published by Apex Hosting describe searching for “Cottage Witch,” selecting it and restarting.
- Copy the displayed server address and port. Have players install the same pack version through their launcher, then connect from Minecraft’s multiplayer screen.
Managed-host checks after the first boot
- Look at the console for a message that the server is ready to accept players rather than still generating a world.
- Confirm the panel reports Forge and Minecraft 1.19.2, not a vanilla or NeoForge template.
- Check the Java setting if the panel exposes one; choose Java 17.
- Keep the server stopped while changing the pack version or replacing server files. Restart only after the panel reports a completed installation.
Managed hosting is convenient, but it does not remove the need for backups, version discipline or moderation. The host’s RAM slider is an allocation limit, not a promise that the pack will run well with unlimited players.
Self-hosting on Windows or Linux
Self-hosting gives you direct access to files and logs but makes you responsible for Java, Forge, updates, firewall rules, uptime and backups. Use a separate folder for each pack instance so an Original server and a Recast server cannot accidentally share a world or configuration.

Make a folder such as C:MinecraftCottageWitch on Windows or ~/minecraft/cottage-witch on Linux. Avoid installing the server inside a cloud-synced documents folder; sync conflicts can corrupt region files while the server is running.
2. Install and verify Java 17
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime. Open a terminal or Command Prompt and run:

java -version
The result should identify Java 17. If another version appears, install Java 17 or change the system path. On Windows, where java shows which executable is being found first; on Linux, which java does the same.
Do not assume that a correct terminal result means Forge will use that same binary. Forge’s generated run.bat or shell script can pick up another Java installation. Read the launch output and, if necessary, edit the script or use the full path to the Java 17 executable.
3. Download the exact Forge installer
From the selected pack’s files page, note the required Forge build and download the Forge 1.19.2 installer. The available Cottage Witch listings confirm the Minecraft version and loader but do not establish one universal Forge build number; the files page for your chosen pack version is authoritative.
Run the installer and choose Install server, pointing it at the empty server directory. A successful installation normally creates Forge libraries and launch files. Do not run the installer in your client’s .minecraft folder.

4. Add the pack’s server files
Download the server pack supplied for the same Cottage Witch version. Extract it into the Forge server directory, preserving folders such as mods, config and any pack-specific scripts. If the archive contains a top-level folder, open it and place the contents where the Forge launch files are located instead of creating an extra nested directory.
For Recast 1.5.4, the listed server archive is 410.3 MB. A client-only mod folder is not a substitute for the server pack; copy the server distribution supplied by the pack author.
5. Accept the EULA and launch once
Start the generated Forge script once. It will usually stop and create eula.txt. Open that file, change eula=false to eula=true only if you accept Mojang’s EULA, save it, and launch again.
Forge 1.19.2 installations commonly provide run.bat on Windows and a shell script for Linux. Some installations also include user_jvm_args.txt. Put memory settings in the file or script that your installation provides; do not maintain several competing launch scripts.

6. Set a sensible memory limit
Use a 64-bit Java process and reserve memory for the operating system. A typical launch allocation is:
-Xms6G -Xmx6G
for a small Original server, or:
-Xms8G -Xmx8G
for Recast. A public Recast server can begin at -Xmx9G if the machine has enough physical RAM. Do not allocate all installed memory: a computer with 8 GB total cannot safely give 8 GB to Java because the operating system and file cache also need space.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
7. Complete the first world start
Launch the server and wait until the console reports that it is ready. The first run can take longer while Forge builds caches and generates terrain. Stop it from the console with stop rather than closing the window, then edit server.properties for the world name, difficulty, view distance, simulation distance and other settings. Start again after saving.
Networking: let players connect safely
Local testing
On the host computer, connect with localhost. Another device on the same home network can use the host computer’s private IPv4 address, such as 192.168.x.x. This test separates a Minecraft configuration problem from an internet routing problem.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Internet access from home
- Give the server computer a stable private address through your router’s DHCP reservation.
- Allow Java or the server process through the operating system firewall on the private network.
- Forward Minecraft’s TCP port, normally
25565, from the router to the server computer’s private address. If you changed the server port, forward the changed value instead. - Give friends your public IP address and port. Never publish your router login, Java remote-console credentials or backup files.
- Test from a connection outside your home network, such as a phone hotspot. Testing only from inside the same LAN can hide a forwarding error.
Some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound forwarding. In that case, use a managed host or a private networking service rather than weakening firewall rules.

Published numbers differ because player count, chunk loading, entity activity and the host machine all affect memory use. Treat them as starting allocations, not guarantees.

| Original, very small private group | 6 GB | BisectHosting’s published recommendation. |
| Original, more active group | 6–8 GB | Apex Hosting ties the range to player count. |
| Recast, five or fewer players | 4 GB may be sufficient | CurseForge’s project guidance; monitor logs and lag before increasing. |
| Recast, fewer than 10 players | 8 GB | CurseForge’s higher player-count guidance. |
| Recast public or growing server | 8 GB initially; 9 GB for public use | StickyPiston recommends 8 GB to start and 9 GB for public servers. |
If the console shows OutOfMemoryError, the process repeatedly crashes during chunk generation, or the operating system begins swapping, stop the server and increase RAM only when physical memory allows it. More RAM does not fix a wrong Java version, mismatched mods or a slow CPU. If memory remains mostly unused but players experience long tick times, investigate CPU load, entity farms and view distance instead.
Make the client and server match
- Install the same Original or Recast project, not a mixture of both.
- Use Minecraft 1.19.2 and Forge, exactly as the server does.
- Match the pack file version. If you update the server, have every player update before reconnecting.
- Do not add or remove gameplay mods on one side only unless the pack documentation explicitly marks them client-only.
- Keep configuration changes synchronized when a mod checks configuration hashes during login.
A “missing mods,” “incompatible FML modded server” or registry-mismatch message usually means one of these values differs. Compare the client’s installed profile with the server’s mods directory before changing Java or reinstalling Forge.
Updates and world protection
Before updating
- Stop the server cleanly with
stop. - Copy the entire world folder,
mods, config, defaultconfigs, server.propertiesand any pack-specific data to a dated backup location. - Read the new pack’s changelog and confirm it still targets Minecraft 1.19.2 Forge.
- Install the new server pack in a separate directory first. Never overwrite your only working installation.
- Start the copy, verify the world and test with one operator account before switching players over.
The Recast version identified in the available listing is 1.5.4 from September 11, 2024; newer files may exist. Check the current files tab rather than assuming 1.5.4 is still the newest release.
Backups that can actually recover a world
Keep at least one backup offline or on another machine. Rotate several dated copies so a corrupted save is not mirrored into every backup. Back up while the server is stopped, or use a backup tool that creates a consistent snapshot. Periodically restore a copy to a test directory; a file that cannot be restored is not a usable backup.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The server exits immediately and mentions Java | Wrong Java major version or the script found another installation. | Verify java -version, inspect the launch output, and point the Forge script to Java 17. |
| Players get a mod-list or registry mismatch | Client and server use different pack files, mods or configurations. | Install the identical pack version and compare the mods and configuration folders. |
| “Could not connect” from outside the home | Firewall, incorrect forwarding, changing private IP or carrier-grade NAT. | Test locally, reserve the host’s private IP, allow the process through the firewall, verify TCP 25565 forwarding and test from an external network. |
| Frequent crashes during exploration | Insufficient allocation, exhausted physical RAM or a faulty mod/configuration. | Read the latest crash report, check system memory, increase allocation within the machine’s limits and revert the last mod or configuration change. |
| Severe lag despite ample RAM | CPU saturation, high view distance, chunk generation or entity-heavy areas. | Lower view and simulation distances, pre-generate cautiously, inspect entity counts and move the server to a faster CPU if the tick time remains high. |
| Forge starts but the pack content is missing | Server archive was extracted into a nested folder or only client files were copied. | Place the supplied server pack’s mods, config and related folders beside the Forge launch files. |
Should you use NeoForge?
No. The documented Cottage Witch and Cottage Witch: Recast releases in scope target Forge on Minecraft 1.19.2. General NeoForge guidance for newer Minecraft versions does not establish a NeoForge build for these packs. Install the Forge loader named by the specific pack file instead.
