Set the Conan Exiles thrall limit from Server Settings → Pet and Hunger by enabling Use Minion Population Limit, then choosing the base population, per-player population, and cleanup interval. On a dedicated server, set the same values in ServerSettings.ini with UseMinionPopulationLimit, MinionPopulationBaseValue, MinionPopulationPerPlayer, and MinionOverpopulationCleanup.

The labels and available keys can differ between installations, hosts, and the current live or Enhanced build. Funcom’s clearest reference is Technical Manual version 1.6 from 2020, so confirm the names shown by your server before saving changes.

The minion population limit controls the number of active follower entities a server permits before overpopulation cleanup begins. The relevant controls are grouped under Pet and Hunger in the private-server settings.
- Use Minion Population Limit: turns the limiter on or off.
- Thrall and Pet Population Base Value: the population allowance associated with a solo player or one-person clan.
- Thrall and Pet Population Per Player: the additional allowance associated with clan members.
- Overpopulation Cleanup Interval: the period, in minutes, between cleanup checks for followers above the limit.
Private servers can choose their own values or disable the limiter entirely. These settings do not automatically reproduce the historical rules used on official servers.

Set the limit in the server-settings interface
This method applies when your host exposes Conan Exiles’ normal settings screen rather than requiring a configuration-file edit.
- Stop or pause the server if your host recommends doing so before changing settings. This reduces the chance that a running process overwrites unsaved values.
- Open Server Settings.
- Select Pet and Hunger.
- Enable Use Minion Population Limit.
- Enter the desired value for Thrall and Pet Population Base Value. Treat this as the allowance for a solo player or one-person clan.
- Enter Thrall and Pet Population Per Player. This controls the extra capacity associated with clan members according to the server’s population calculation.
- Set Overpopulation Cleanup Interval in minutes. A shorter interval processes excess followers sooner; a longer interval leaves more time to move or store them before cleanup.
- Save the settings, then restart or reload the server using the host’s normal workflow.
- Join the server and verify that the setting is enabled and that the displayed values match what you saved.
Some control panels omit advanced settings. If you cannot find Use Minion Population Limit or the population fields, look for file or FTP access instead of assuming the setting does not exist.
Set the limit in ServerSettings.ini
Dedicated servers store the corresponding options in ServerSettings.ini. The exact directory depends on whether the server is self-hosted, rented, running through a management panel, or installed with a particular platform. Use your host’s documented configuration location rather than copying a path from another installation.

Editing procedure
- Stop the dedicated server, or follow the host’s documented safe-edit procedure.
- Make a backup copy of
ServerSettings.ini. - Open the file as plain text and locate the existing minion-population entries. If they are absent, add them in the same section and formatting style used by the rest of the file.
- Set the limiter to the required Boolean value and enter numeric values for the base, per-player allowance, and cleanup interval. Do not add quotation marks unless the file already uses them for that setting.
- Save the file without changing its extension or character encoding.
- Start or reload the server through the host’s normal control panel.
- Check the server log or in-game settings, when available, to confirm that the new values were read.
A web panel may regenerate ServerSettings.ini when you save another setting. If your changes disappear, edit the panel’s own advanced-configuration field or apply the file change after the panel has finished writing its configuration.
How base and per-player capacity interact
The base value establishes the starting allowance. The per-player value supplies additional capacity tied to clan membership. Because implementations and labels can change, use the wording in your current settings screen as the authority for whether the first clan member is included in the per-player calculation or whether the value applies only to additional members.

- the number of players who will normally belong to the largest clan;
- the number of active combat thralls and pets that clan needs at one time;
- how quickly you want the server to process followers left above the limit.
Increase the base value when a solo player must support more active followers. Increase the per-player value when capacity should grow with clan size. If you want a fixed server-wide ceiling regardless of clan size, use a base value that meets your target and set the per-player value to zero, provided the current build accepts that configuration.
What the official-server numbers mean
Funcom’s June 15, 2021 announcement described the official-server soft cap as a 50-follower base limit and 15 followers added per clan member. The same announcement used a five-member clan as an example: 125 followers at the soft cap and 225 at the hard cap. The hard cap was described as 100 followers above the soft cap.

These are historical official-server figures, not a universal recommendation for private servers. A private administrator can select different values or disable the limiter. The exact live or Enhanced-build behavior in 2026 should be checked against the settings exposed by the current server build.

Which followers count toward the limit?
Funcom’s official follower-limit description applies the limit to placeable combat thralls and pets. It also states that players may keep as many crafter thralls as they wish. Followers placed in crafting stations or storage boxes do not count toward the maximum and are not removed by this cleanup system, according to Funcom’s FAQ.
This distinction matters when reducing a clan’s population. Removing a crafter from the world is not the same as moving a combat follower into a crafting station or storage container. Before lowering a limit, identify which followers are active, placeable combat followers and which are stored or assigned to crafting.
What happens when a clan exceeds the hard cap?
If a clan exceeds its hard cap, Funcom says the server periodically selects followers for deletion. The published selection method scores each follower by multiplying its level by its tier; when scores are tied, the system chooses randomly. That means an over-cap cleanup is not simply “remove the newest follower” or “remove the lowest-level follower.”
Because deletion can be permanent, move followers you cannot risk losing into the storage or crafting arrangements that the current rules recognize as exempt before changing the limit. Do not wait for the cleanup interval to expire if the server is already above its hard cap.

Troubleshooting
The setting is missing from the panel
Look for an advanced-settings view, then check whether the host offers direct file or FTP access. Hosting panels do not necessarily expose every Conan Exiles option.
The value saves but has no effect
Confirm that UseMinionPopulationLimit is enabled, save the file after stopping the server, and perform the host’s required restart or configuration reload. A panel may overwrite manual edits when it regenerates the file.
Followers disappear after lowering the limit
Check the cleanup interval and the hard-cap state. Active placeable combat thralls and pets can be selected when the clan is over the hard cap. Move valuable followers into crafting stations or storage boxes before the next cleanup check, where the published rules treat them as exempt.
The current labels do not match the manual
The clearest primary manual reference is version 1.6 from 2020, while the official cap announcement dates from 2021. Treat those documents as definitions of the settings and historical behavior, not proof that every 2026 interface uses identical labels. Record the values shown by your current build and test with a nonessential follower before applying a large population change.
