What TamingSpeedMultiplier does
TamingSpeedMultiplier is the ARK server configuration value that scales the speed of creature taming. The ARK Official Community Wiki’s current configuration reference, accessed in 2026, lists 1.0 as the default. Increasing the number increases the intended taming rate; reducing it below 1.0 makes taming slower.

The multiplier is not a universal promise of a particular number of minutes. Actual duration still depends on the creature species, the food being used, taming effectiveness, the game edition and server version, and other configuration values. A value of 5.0 should therefore be read as an intended five-times scaling of the baseline, not as a guarantee that every creature will finish in exactly one-fifth of a listed time.
Choose the correct configuration file
For a dedicated ARK server, this setting belongs in GameUserSettings.ini, inside the [ServerSettings] section. It does not belong in Game.ini. The exact folder depends on whether you self-host, use a Linux or Windows installation, or rent a managed server, but the active saved configuration is the file that matters.

- Self-hosted server: locate the live server’s saved configuration directory, not an untouched example or default template.
- Managed server: use the provider’s settings or expert-configuration editor when available; it writes to the active configuration for you.
- ARK: Survival Evolved versus ARK: Survival Ascended: directory names, panel labels, and available controls can differ. Do not assume a path or label from one edition applies unchanged to the other.
Before changing anything, make a copy of the current file or use your host’s backup function. A backup gives you a known-good configuration to restore if a formatting mistake prevents the server from starting.
Set the multiplier by editing the INI file
Use this procedure when you control the server files directly.
- Stop the server. Shut it down cleanly before editing. A running process may rewrite the file when it saves or stops, potentially discarding your change.
- Open the active
GameUserSettings.ini. Use the file in the server’s saved configuration location. If you operate more than one instance, verify the instance and map you intend to change. - Find
[ServerSettings]. Search the file for that exact section header. If it is missing, create the section using the INI format documented for your server platform. - Add or edit one setting line. Put the following line under
[ServerSettings]:
TamingSpeedMultiplier=5.0- Remove duplicates. Keep one active
TamingSpeedMultiplierline. Two entries can make it unclear which value the server or management panel will retain. - Save the file. Preserve the
.iniextension and plain-text formatting. Do not add quotation marks around the value. - Start or restart the server. Configuration changes normally take effect when the server loads its settings, not while an existing session is running.
- Confirm persistence. After the restart, reopen the file or panel and make sure the line still exists with the value you selected. If it disappeared, a panel, startup script, or template may be regenerating the file.
LinuxGSM’s ARK dedicated-server documentation also places this type of option in [ServerSettings]. The exact directory is platform-specific, so follow the layout used by your installation rather than copying a path from another host.
How to choose a taming value

The first three values are useful reference points, not independently measured completion times. Very high settings can make parts of the taming loop feel irrelevant and may undermine the progression your group expects. Decide whether players should still need to gather food, protect an unconscious creature, and monitor effectiveness; then choose a rate that supports that goal.

Do not promise a fixed duration for every dinosaur from the multiplier alone. For a particular creature, use a current taming calculator that identifies its game edition, version, food assumptions, and related rates. Treat the result as an estimate for those assumptions, not as a universal server guarantee.
Use a managed host’s configuration panel
A managed host can avoid manual path and file-permission work. Nitrado documents both a web-interface method and direct editing of GameUserSettings.ini. Panel names change over time, so the practical route is:
- Open the server in the provider’s control panel.
- Enter the general settings, expert settings, or configuration editor used for ARK server options.
- Search for the taming-speed field, or open the raw INI editor and find
[ServerSettings]. - Enter the numeric value, such as
5.0, without extra text. - Save the configuration and use the panel’s restart control.
- After the server returns online, verify that the value remains in the panel or generated INI file.
Nitrado describes the setting this way: “When set to a higher value, will increase the speed at which taming occurs on your ARK: Survival Evolved server.” The panel is a convenience layer; it does not change what the underlying server option means.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting

The multiplier itself is independent of the hosting choice. A value of 5.0 means the same intended scaling whether it was entered in a text editor or a web form, provided both servers use the same game edition, version, and related settings.

Why single-player taming can differ from a dedicated server
The official configuration reference notes that bUseSingleplayerSettings=True applies an additional 2.5 multiplier to TamingSpeedMultiplier. A single-player test can therefore feel substantially faster than a dedicated server using the same visible taming value when the dedicated server does not enable that option.
For example, a single-player setup showing TamingSpeedMultiplier=4.0 with bUseSingleplayerSettings=True is subject to the additional 2.5 factor. A dedicated server that uses TamingSpeedMultiplier=4.0 but leaves the single-player option disabled does not receive that same extra adjustment. When comparing results, record both settings rather than comparing the taming number alone.

- Remember that a single-player session may also use a different collection of local settings than a dedicated server.
Verify the change without overinterpreting the test
After the restart, perform a controlled sanity check rather than trying to derive a universal timing chart.
- Choose a creature and food combination whose normal taming behavior you already recognize.
- Confirm the server has loaded the intended multiplier in its file or panel.
- Begin taming and watch for the expected change in progress relative to your known baseline.
- Check that effectiveness, food consumption, and narcotic use behave normally for the species.
- If the result is unexpected, stop changing values at random and work through the troubleshooting section below.
This test confirms that the server loaded a setting; it is not an independently measured performance benchmark and should not be used to claim an exact number of minutes for every creature.

Operational practices for a shared server
Announce the change
Tell players when the multiplier will change and whether the new rate applies to newly started tames only or is intended as a general server-policy change. Players planning long sessions may have made resource and breeding decisions based on the previous progression.

Keep a written configuration record
Record the date, value, game edition, server version, and whether bUseSingleplayerSettings was enabled. This makes later comparisons possible when a host migrates the server or regenerates its configuration.
Change one relevant variable at a time
If you alter taming speed, food consumption, narcotic requirements, and related rates simultaneously, you cannot tell which change caused an unexpected result. Apply the multiplier, restart, test, and only then decide whether another setting needs adjustment.
Restore deliberately
If the new rate harms progression, stop the server, restore the saved configuration or replace the value with the prior number, and restart again. Do not leave multiple competing lines in the file as a workaround.
Practical examples
Standard progression
Leave the line as TamingSpeedMultiplier=1.0. This matches the documented baseline and is the clearest choice when you want server behavior close to the default.

Fast cooperative server
Use TamingSpeedMultiplier=5.0 when your group wants substantially shorter waits. Test it with a familiar tame and make sure the resulting food and narcotic demands still fit your server’s economy.
Single-player comparison
If a local game feels faster than a dedicated server despite the same visible value, compare bUseSingleplayerSettings first. The documented additional 2.5 multiplier explains why equal-looking numbers do not necessarily produce equal behavior.
