People on your home network can test with localhost. Friends elsewhere need Java allowed through the host firewall and TCP port 25565 forwarded from the router to the server computer. The steps below cover a Windows or Linux host, common connection failures, backups, and the trade-offs between running the server yourself and using managed hosting.

What you need before installing AQM2
AQM2 is a large 1.19-era pack that combines adventure and RPG content with quests, technology, magic, new biomes, structures, dungeons, bosses, and mobs. The server must match the pack’s Minecraft target: 1.19.2. A client running another Minecraft release, another AQM2 release, or a different mod-loader build will normally fail to join even if the server itself starts.
Required software
- Minecraft Java Edition 1.19.2: The official Java server is not compatible with Bedrock Edition.
- The AQM2 1.19.2 server pack: CurseForge lists the file
server_aqm2-1.19.2_1.4.zipas a server-pack release for this Minecraft version. - Java 17, 64-bit: Forge’s 1.19.2 documentation says Minecraft and Forge compile against Java 17 and recommends a 64-bit JVM.
- A separate server directory: Keep server files away from your ordinary client instance so that client-only mods and settings are not copied accidentally.
- Network access: Local players need the host’s local address; internet players require firewall and router configuration.
What the documentation does not specify
No authoritative AQM2 documentation establishes a universal minimum for RAM, CPU model, player count, or current hosting price. Your practical capacity depends on the world, view distance, number of loaded chunks, automation, exploration, and simultaneous players. Start with conservative settings, watch the server log and in-game responsiveness, and increase resources only when measurements show a need.

Download the correct AQM2 server pack
- Create a new directory such as
AQM2-1.19.2-server. Do not put it inside your client’s.minecraftinstance unless the pack documentation explicitly requires that layout. - Open the official AQM2 files page on CurseForge and select the Minecraft 1.19.2 server-pack entry. Confirm that the download is a server pack rather than a client profile or an unrelated Minecraft version.
- Download the server archive, currently listed as
server_aqm2-1.19.2_1.4.zip. - Extract the archive directly into the new server directory. Preserve its folder structure, scripts, libraries, configuration directories, and any bundled Forge files.
Do not combine this archive with files from another AQM2 release. A pack update can change mods, configuration formats, and world behavior; mixing versions produces missing-mod errors or crashes that are difficult to diagnose.
Install and verify 64-bit Java 17
Forge 1.19.2 expects Java 17. Newer or older Java versions may allow the process to launch but can also cause class-version errors, illegal-access errors, or an immediate shutdown. Install a 64-bit Java 17 distribution for your operating system, then open a new terminal so the updated PATH is loaded.
Check the active runtime
Run this command from Command Prompt, PowerShell, Terminal, or a shell:
java -versionThe output should identify Java 17 and a 64-bit virtual machine. If it reports another major version, either update your system PATH or edit the AQM2 launch script so it points to the Java 17 executable. On a 64-bit Windows installation, verify that the selected Java executable is under a 64-bit program directory; on Linux, verify the package architecture with your distribution’s package tools.

When Java is installed but the server still uses the wrong version
- Open a fresh terminal after changing environment variables.
- Run
where javaon Windows orwhich javaon Linux to see which executable is being selected. - Use the full path to the Java 17 binary in the supplied launch script if another Java installation takes precedence.
- Do not delete the pack’s libraries or replace its Forge files while fixing Java selection.
Launch Forge for the first time
Server packs commonly include a Windows batch file and a Unix shell script, often named run.bat and run.sh. Use the files included with the AQM2 archive rather than inventing a command that omits Forge libraries or arguments.
- Open a terminal in the server directory, or double-click the supplied Windows script. On Linux, make the shell script executable if necessary and run it from that directory.
- Allow the first launch to create the Forge libraries, configuration folders, logs, and world directory. The initial process may take longer than later starts.
- Expect the dedicated server to stop after the first run if the EULA has not been accepted. Forge documents this as normal behavior.
- Read the EULA supplied in the active server directory. Depending on the pack’s launcher layout, the file may be
eula.txtat the server root orrun/eula.txt. - Only if you agree to Minecraft’s EULA, change the line
eula=falsetoeula=true, save the file, and start the same supplied script again.
If no EULA file appears, you may have launched the script from the wrong working directory or the process may have failed before initialization. Check the terminal output and logs/latest.log, then run the script from the directory that contains the pack’s files.
Configure the server before inviting players
After the EULA is accepted, stop the server cleanly once configuration is complete. Edit server.properties with a plain-text editor; save it as text rather than allowing a word processor to add formatting.
Important settings
- Server name or message: Set the description that appears in a server list.
- Difficulty: Choose the level appropriate for your group before the world is established.
- View distance: A higher value can increase chunk processing and network traffic. Lower it if the host struggles while players explore.
- Whitelist: Enable it when only named friends should join, then add those Java usernames from the server console.
- Online-mode and authentication: Leave authentication-related values at their secure defaults unless you understand the consequences of changing them.
server-ip: Usually leave this blank. Binding it to a specific interface is only needed for a deliberate multi-interface network setup; an incorrect value can prevent the server from listening.
Change one setting at a time and restart when required. Keep a copy of the original properties file so you can identify which change caused a startup or connection problem.

Let players connect on the same network
Start the server and wait until the console reports that it is ready for connections. On the host computer, open Minecraft Java Edition 1.19.2 with the exact AQM2 client pack and choose Multiplayer followed by Add Server. Enter localhost as the address. Minecraft Help identifies localhost as the local test address.
Another computer on the same home network should connect using the host’s private IPv4 address, such as an address beginning with 192.168., 10., or 172.16–172.31. Find that address with ipconfig on Windows or ip addr on Linux. Do not share a private address with someone who is outside your network; it is not routable from the public internet.

Mojang’s Java server guidance notes that firewall and port-forwarding configuration may be required. The usual Java server port is TCP 25565.
Configure the host firewall
- When the operating system asks whether Java may communicate on a network, allow it on the appropriate private network.
- If no prompt appears, create an inbound rule for the Java server process or for TCP port 25565. Restrict the rule to networks and source addresses you trust where your firewall supports that control.
- Keep the operating system, Java runtime, and router firmware updated.
Forward the router port
- Sign in to the router’s administration interface.
- Create a port-forwarding rule for TCP 25565 to the server computer’s private IPv4 address.
- Reserve that private address with a DHCP reservation, or assign a carefully managed static address, so the rule does not point to the wrong computer after a reboot.
- Save the rule and restart the server if the router requires it.
Share your public address privately with invited players; if the router or internet provider changes it, you will need to send the new address. A remote player normally enters the public address followed by :25565, for example example-address:25565. Minecraft Help describes this public-address-plus-port format.

Exposing a service to the internet carries security risk. Use a whitelist, strong account security, regular backups, and the smallest firewall exposure that meets your needs. If your provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, ordinary port forwarding may not work; in that case, use a provider-supported tunnel or managed hosting rather than weakening unrelated firewall rules.

Every player should install the same Minecraft Java Edition version (1.19.2), the same AQM2 release, and the same Forge/mod-loader and mod versions used by the server pack. A client copied from a newer pack release is not interchangeable with the server even when both display “AQM2.”
- Compare the pack version shown by the launcher with the server-pack filename and release.
- Remove extra client-only mods when the pack documentation does not include them for multiplayer.
- Do not copy the entire client
modsfolder into the server directory; client-only files can crash a dedicated server. - If a join attempt reports a missing or extra mod, compare the mod lists and versions rather than repeatedly restarting.
Operate and back up the world safely
Clean shutdowns
Use the server console’s stop command before closing the terminal or rebooting the host. A clean stop flushes world data and reduces the chance of region-file corruption.
What to back up

Copy backups only while the server is stopped, or use a backup method that safely snapshots locked files. Keep dated copies on a different disk or machine so a failed drive does not destroy both the live world and its backup. Before changing the pack, make a fresh backup and test that you can restore it to a separate directory.

Updating AQM2
Do not replace individual mods at random. First verify that an AQM2 server-pack release and all required mods support the Minecraft and Forge versions you intend to run. Record the old version, back up the world and configuration, install the new pack in a separate directory, and migrate only the files the release instructions say to carry forward. A separate test world can reveal startup or generation problems before you expose the update to players.

Self-hosting is appropriate when you want complete control and can maintain a reachable machine. Managed hosting is useful when you prefer an externally reachable endpoint and a provider that handles much of the installation workflow. Modrinth describes its hosting service as integrating modpack installation and providing SFTP access, but each provider’s limits and terms differ.

Choose self-hosting if file-level control and local administration matter more than convenience. Choose managed hosting if router configuration, uptime, or automated pack installation is the main obstacle, and confirm the provider supports the exact AQM2 1.19.2 release before paying.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The server exits immediately
- Run
java -versionand confirm Java 17, 64-bit. - Launch the supplied script from the server directory so relative library paths resolve.
- Open
logs/latest.logand read the first error and its surrounding stack trace; later errors are often consequences. - Check that the archive was fully extracted and that no security tool quarantined a library.
The server stops at the EULA stage
Confirm that eula.txt is in the active directory used by the launcher. Set eula=true only after accepting the EULA, save the file, and restart the same script. Editing a similarly named file in the wrong folder will produce the same EULA prompt again.
Mods are missing or the wrong versions load
Download the exact AQM2 1.19.2 server pack again, compare its release number with each client, and remove files copied from another pack or Minecraft version. A server pack is not interchangeable with a client-only installation.
Local connections work but friends cannot join
- Retest locally with
localhostto prove that the server process is running. - Test from another device on the same LAN using the host’s private IP.
- Recheck the host firewall rule for TCP 25565.
- Recheck that the router forwards TCP 25565 to the current private IP of the server computer.
- Have the remote player use the current public address with
:25565. - Investigate carrier-grade NAT, double NAT, or an ISP inbound-port restriction if the rule appears correct but the port remains unreachable.
A player receives a client mismatch error
Compare Minecraft 1.19.2, the AQM2 release, Forge version, and every required mod on both sides. Reinstalling the client pack from the same release as the server is usually safer than manually replacing one jar.
