Edit the generated ServerConfig.toml in your BeamMP server’s working directory. In the [General] section, change the quoted Name and Description values, save the file, and restart the server. A typical configuration looks like this:

What the two settings control
BeamMP reads two strings in ServerConfig.toml for the text displayed to players:
Name: the server title shown in the server list.Description: the descriptive text shown in the server list when the server is public.
Both values belong under the [General] heading. They are ordinary TOML strings, so keep the value inside matching quotation marks.

Find the correct ServerConfig.toml file
Start the server once to generate it
A new BeamMP installation does not necessarily contain a configuration file immediately. Start the server one time using your normal launch method. BeamMP then generates ServerConfig.toml.

The file is written to the server’s working directory. That may be different from the directory containing the BeamMP executable. If you cannot see the file beside the executable, check the folder from which the server process is launched, or the working-directory setting in your shortcut, service definition, script, or hosting panel.
Confirm you are editing the active instance
Multiple BeamMP instances can each have their own working directory and configuration. Before changing a file, identify the instance you intend to modify and close or stop that instance if your operating procedure requires it. Editing a copy in another folder will not change the server players are joining.
Change the name and description in the TOML file
- Stop the BeamMP server, or follow your host’s documented editing procedure if it supports live configuration changes.
- Open the active
ServerConfig.tomlfrom the server’s working directory in a plain-text editor. - Find the
[General]section. - Replace the text between the quotation marks after
Name =. - Replace the text between the quotation marks after
Description =. - Save the file as plain text, preserving the
.tomlextension. - Start or restart the BeamMP server.
For example:

Private = falseThe last line is included to show the public-list setting. It is separate from the name and description fields, but it determines whether those details can appear in the public server list.

Keep TOML syntax intact
- Use
Name = "..."andDescription = "..."with an equals sign. - Use straight quotation marks, not typographic “smart quotes.”
- Keep each assignment on its own line.
- If your text contains a quotation mark, ensure the resulting TOML remains valid rather than leaving an unmatched quote.
- Save changes to the file that the running server actually uses.
Make the server visible in the public list
A correctly edited name or description will not make a private server appear publicly. BeamMP’s configuration uses Private = true to keep a server out of the public server list. Set Private = false when public listing is intended.

A private server can still have a name and description for the people who connect through its private access method, but it does not appear in the public listing while the private flag is enabled.
Format server-list text
BeamMP documents formatting codes that can be placed before the text they should affect. The same codes can be used in the name and description where BeamMP supports them, with the documented exception that ^p creates a newline in descriptions only.

Apply a style or color
Put the code immediately before the characters it should affect. For example:

Description = "^oClean runs and friendly driving^r^pJoin the next session"In this example, ^l requests bold text, ^2 selects one of BeamMP’s documented colors, and ^o requests italics. The ^r reset returns following text to the default formatting, while ^p inserts a line break in the description.

Formatting is optional. A plain string is often easier to read across different clients, while codes are useful when a short title needs emphasis or a longer description needs clear lines.
Respect the documented character limits
The BeamMP manual lists a maximum of 250 characters for Name and 1,000 characters for Description. The documentation records these limits but does not state a publication year for them, so treat them as the current documented limits and verify behavior after upgrades.
- Count the complete value stored for the setting, including formatting codes, when keeping a string within the documented ceiling.
- Keep the most important identifying words near the beginning, since a long value may be truncated by a particular display even when it remains within BeamMP’s documented limit.
- Use
^ponly in descriptions; BeamMP documents that code as a description newline.
If a value exceeds the documented limit, shorten it before troubleshooting other parts of the configuration. A concise name and a description split into a few readable lines are easier for players to scan.
Restart the server after saving
Restarting is the step that applies file-based changes. A safe sequence is:
- Stop the BeamMP process cleanly.
- Save
ServerConfig.tomlin the active working directory. - Start the same server instance again.
- Wait for it to finish loading and register normally.
- Check the server list or connect directly to confirm the displayed text.
If the old name remains, allow time for the server list to refresh, then verify that the process was restarted and that you edited the file belonging to that process. Do not assume that changing a similarly named file in the executable directory changes the active configuration.

Use environment variables on BeamMP v3.2.0 and newer
For server release v3.2.0 or newer, BeamMP supports environment variables that can override the TOML values. The documented variables are:
BEAMMP_NAME="My BeamMP Server"
BEAMMP_DESCRIPTION="Welcome to the server"Environment-variable values, including numeric values for other supported settings, must be supplied as strings. Set these variables in the environment used to launch the BeamMP process, then restart that process.
When an override appears to do nothing
- Confirm the server is running v3.2.0 or newer.
- Check that the variables are defined for the same user, service, container, or panel that launches BeamMP.
- Use the exact variable names
BEAMMP_NAMEandBEAMMP_DESCRIPTION. - Put the values in quotes where your shell or service configuration requires quoting.
- Restart the process after changing the environment.
If an environment variable is present, it can take precedence over the corresponding value in ServerConfig.toml. That explains why a correctly edited TOML file may not change the displayed name or description on a v3.2.0-or-newer server.

BeamMP’s VPS guidance describes hosting panels that provide fields for an AuthKey, server name, and description. Some providers do not expose the underlying TOML file for direct editing. When a panel supplies dedicated Name and Description fields, enter the values there and use the panel’s save and restart controls.
Panel interfaces differ, so the exact button labels and location are provider-specific. The underlying rules do not change:
- Enter the name and description as text, using the panel’s fields rather than creating a second configuration file.
- Use the documented formatting codes if the panel passes them through to BeamMP.
- Restart the server through the panel after saving.
- Check the panel’s private/public control if the server should appear in the public list.
If a panel offers both editable fields and environment-variable settings, determine which one is active for the server version and launch method. A provider may regenerate configuration during a restart, so keep the intended values in the panel or environment mechanism that the provider documents.
Local file or hosted panel: which route should you use?

Choose the local-file route when you control the BeamMP process and need direct access to TOML. Choose the panel route when the provider manages the server files and exposes supported fields. In either case, identify the active launch configuration before changing values.
Troubleshoot a name or description that does not appear
The file cannot be found
Start the server once so BeamMP can generate the file. Then search the process’s working directory, not only the folder containing the executable. A shortcut, service, script, container, or panel can set a different working directory.
The old text is still displayed
Check that you saved the correct file, preserved the .toml extension, and fully restarted the same server instance. On v3.2.0 or newer, look for BEAMMP_NAME or BEAMMP_DESCRIPTION in the launch environment; those values can override the file.
The server is missing from the public list
Inspect the Private setting. Public listing requires Private = false. If the server is private, changing its name or description alone cannot make it appear in the public list.
Formatting looks wrong
Check each code’s placement and spelling. Use the documented forms such as ^l, ^o, ^r, and ^p; place ^p in descriptions when you need a line break. Remove formatting codes temporarily and test with plain text to separate a syntax problem from a display or refresh issue.

The configuration will not load
Restore valid TOML syntax: matching quotation marks, one assignment per line, and the [General] heading exactly as written. If you made several edits, compare the affected lines with a simple working example and restart again.
