When a DayZ server will not start, first determine whether the process is exiting, BattlEye is failing, or the server is running but unreachable. Launch it with logging enabled, read the newest RPT/profile log, and change one layer at a time: configuration, files and mission, Windows runtime, BattlEye, network, then mods.

Start by identifying the failure stage
Different symptoms point to different evidence. Use the symptom that matches what you can observe, then follow the corresponding first action.

Do not make several unrelated changes before collecting evidence. A clean log from the failed launch is more useful than a successful launch produced after five simultaneous edits.

Capture the exact failure with logging enabled
The RPT/profile log is the primary record of DayZ server startup. The official DayZ server configuration reference documents -doLogs, -adminLog, and -netLog; it also states that a configuration file supplied with -config is mandatory.
Create a repeatable launch command
Put a batch file in the server installation directory so every test uses the same arguments. Adjust the executable path and mission-related options to match your installation:

Note the time of the attempt. Open the newest RPT or profile log created at that time, not an older file from a previous configuration.
Read the last meaningful error, not just the first warning
Search the newest log for Cannot open, Missing addons, SCRIPT (E), BattlEye messages, and port or bind errors. The final fatal line often names the missing file, mission, dependency, or path. Keep a copy of the failing log before trying a fix; otherwise a later launch can overwrite the most useful evidence.
Validate serverDZ.cfg before touching networking
A missing, malformed, or incorrectly referenced configuration file can stop the server before networking begins. Confirm the exact path passed to -config. If the batch file runs from a different working directory, use an explicit path rather than assuming Windows will find the file.

Check syntax and required values
- Make sure every setting uses the expected spelling and includes its terminating semicolon.
- Keep quotation marks balanced around text values; one missing quote can make the parser reject the remainder of the file.
- Confirm that the hostname, password, administration settings, and other required entries are present for your configuration.
- Verify that the mission/template value names a template actually installed with the server.
- Save the file as plain text with the expected filename, rather than accidentally creating
serverDZ.cfg.txt.
Bohemia Interactive Community’s DayZ server configuration reference makes the consequence explicit: “There is no default name; when non is specified, the server won’t launch due to the mandatory settings.” Treat a missing required value as a startup error, not as a cosmetic naming issue.

Make one controlled correction at a time
After editing the configuration, launch with the same batch file and compare the new RPT with the saved failure. If the process advances farther, keep that change and continue. If it fails at the same line, revert the edit and test the next suspected value. This creates a clear cause-and-effect trail.
Confirm the mission and installation files exist
The -mission argument or mission/template entry in the configuration must point to content present in the server installation. A typo, incomplete update, or copied client-only folder can prevent startup.
Interpret common file messages
Cannot open: the server cannot find or read the named file or path. Check spelling, capitalization where relevant, the working directory, and whether the file was actually installed.Missing addons: a mission or mod references a dependency that was not loaded. Verify that the dependency exists and is included in the correct load argument.- Mission-related failure with no clear filename: temporarily select a known-good, installed mission template and test a vanilla launch. If that works, the original mission path or package is the problem.
Do not copy random files from a client installation to fill a missing server directory. Compare the server’s installed files with the distribution or update process you used, then repair that installation if files are absent.
Check Windows runtime components and permissions
An immediate close can be caused by a missing Visual C++ Redistributable or a DLL that Windows cannot load. Installing packages blindly is slower and can leave the real error unresolved.

Use Event Viewer to identify a missing module
- Press
Win+R, entereventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs and then Application.
- Find the error at the time of the failed launch. Record the faulting application and exact module name.
- Use that module name to determine whether the Visual C++ runtime, a server file, or another dependency is missing.
If the event identifies a Visual C++ runtime component, install the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for the server’s architecture, restart if Windows requests it, and run the same test again. If the event names a DayZ or BattlEye DLL instead, repair the server files and permissions rather than treating every crash as a runtime problem.
Check account and folder permissions
The account launching the server must be able to read the installation, write logs and profiles, and create or access the BattlEye service directory. A protected or inherited folder permission can look like a missing-file error. Test from a directory where the service account has normal read/write access, and avoid granting broad permissions to the whole machine when a specific folder permission is sufficient.
Repair BattlEye initialization failures
BattlEye startup problems commonly involve a blocked executable, missing files, or insufficient Windows permissions. The BattlEye FAQ identifies security software blocking BEService.exe, BEService_x64.exe, or the BattlEye service directory as a frequent cause.
Check the files and paths DayZ expects
- Confirm that
BEService.exeorBEService_x64.exeexists in the installation used by the server. - The DayZ server reference places
BEServer_x64.cfgbesideBEServer_x64.dll. Verify that both are present in the expected BattlEye directory. - If you use custom locations, check the paths supplied through
-BEpathand-profiles. A path that points to a nonexistent or unwritable folder can prevent service initialization or log creation.
Check antivirus and security history
- Open the antivirus or endpoint-security quarantine and detection history.
- Look for the BattlEye executable or service directory at the exact time of the failed launch.
- If it was blocked or quarantined, restore it only if you obtained the server files from a trusted source.
- Add a narrowly scoped exclusion for the verified BattlEye executable or service directory, then retest.
Do not disable all security protection as a permanent fix. If the files are present and unblocked, inspect folder permissions and the BattlEye log before changing anything else.

A damaged or incomplete BattlEye service directory can be rebuilt, but deleting it should not be the first response. Save the existing BattlEye log, stop the server, and recreate the directory only after confirming that the service files are missing or corrupted. Then launch once with logging enabled so you can verify that the service is installed and started.

Separate a running server from an unreachable server
If DayZServer_x64.exe remains active and continues writing logs, startup has probably succeeded. At that point, changing serverDZ.cfg or reinstalling the executable will not solve a blocked port.
Test locally first
- On the server machine, use the DayZ client’s direct-connect option with
127.0.0.1:2302. - If local connection fails, inspect the server log, Windows Firewall, and the configured port before involving the router.
- If local connection succeeds, test from another device on the same network. This distinguishes a Windows rule from an internet-facing forwarding or public-IP issue.
The setup and troubleshooting guidance identifies UDP ports 2302–2305 as the normal range to check. The exact game and Steam query ports depend on your launch configuration, so read the values in the batch file and server settings rather than forwarding an arbitrary range.
Verify Windows Firewall and router forwarding
- Create inbound Windows Firewall rules for the configured DayZ server executable or required UDP ports.
- Forward the same UDP ports on the router to the server’s current local IP address.
- Reserve that local IP in the router or configure a static address so forwarding does not silently point to another device after a reboot.
- Check that the client is using the server’s public IP when connecting from outside the LAN, and the local address when testing inside it.
A browser listing can fail even when direct connection works. Query traffic, firewall rules, or Steam service reachability may be the missing layer. Record whether the process is running, whether local direct connect works, and whether only public clients fail; those are three different problems.

Mods add files, dependencies, scripts, paths, and load-order requirements. Remove both -mod and -serverMod temporarily and launch the unmodified server with the same configuration and ports.
Interpret the result
- Vanilla fails: continue with configuration, mission, runtime, BattlEye, or network diagnosis. The mod set is not yet relevant.
- Vanilla starts and is reachable: the base server is healthy; isolate the mod set.
- Vanilla starts but a specific mission fails: verify that mission’s files and dependencies separately from the general mod collection.
Use binary search for a large mod collection
- Divide the enabled mods into two groups of roughly equal size.
- Launch with only the first group and inspect the RPT.
- If it fails, divide that group again. If it succeeds, test the other half.
- Repeat until one mod or dependency chain remains.
- Check its path, required dependency, load order, and compatibility with the mission. Look for
SCRIPT (E),Missing addons, andCannot openmessages.
Adding mods one at a time is slower but useful when the collection is small. Binary search is more efficient for large sets because each launch eliminates roughly half the suspects.
Account for browser maintenance and filtering
Not every visibility problem is local. Bohemia’s support information notes that scheduled Wednesday maintenance can affect server-browser visibility. If your process is running, local direct connect works, and firewall and forwarding checks are clean, check the official service-status or support notices before rebuilding the server.
Browser filters can also hide a healthy server. For testing, remove restrictive filters and verify whether BattlEye-protected servers are excluded. BattlEye bans and ban administration are handled by BattlEye, not Bohemia Interactive; a ban-related visibility issue therefore requires the BattlEye process, not a DayZ configuration edit.
Choose the smallest remedy that matches the evidence

When managed hosting is the better operating model
Self-hosting is reasonable when you can maintain Windows, updates, backups, firewall rules, router forwarding, BattlEye, and mod files. If those recurring tasks—not one isolated error—are the burden, managed hosting changes the operating model rather than fixing a particular misconfiguration.
Before moving, document your current mission, configuration values, mod list and load order, player data, backup requirements, and port assumptions. A host can remove some operating-system and network work, but you still need to validate the server’s files, mods, permissions, and restore process. Choose this route because maintenance is the problem, not because a single malformed configuration file is inconvenient.
