The literal character, JavaScript escape u20B9, and HTML reference ₹ all represent the same character.
Use U+20B9 for the Indian rupee sign
The Unicode Standard names U+20B9 the INDIAN RUPEE SIGN and identifies it as the character for India’s official rupee currency symbol. Do not substitute U+20A8 RUPEE SIGN: it is an older sign that is not formally tied to one currency. Unicode Standard, Version 17.0, Chapter 22.

Character identity and visual rendering are separate checks. Your fixture can contain U+20B9 while the browser’s available fonts lack a suitable glyph, producing a missing-glyph box or unexpected mark. Check both the DOM text and the rendered result.

In JavaScript or TypeScript, either the literal symbol or its Unicode escape works:
#1 Best Overall
const amountWithSymbol = '₹1,234.56';
const amountWithEscape = 'u20B91,234.56';
In HTML, use the literal symbol or the numeric character reference:
<span>₹1,234.56</span>
<span>₹1,234.56</span>
These are alternative source representations of the same intended code point; using an escape does not fix a font that cannot render it.

Capture and compare a Playwright screenshot
toHaveScreenshot() is a Playwright Test assertion. On its first run it creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare against that baseline. This minimal test isolates the amount as a locator:

test('renders Indian rupee amount', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setContent('<span>₹1,234.56</span>');
await expect(page.locator('span')).toHaveScreenshot('rupee-amount.png');
});
For a complete interface, assert on the page or on the component containing the symbol; for a focused glyph check, an element assertion keeps unrelated layout out of the comparison. Playwright documents visual comparisons, PageAssertions, and Page screenshot APIs.

Keep screenshot baselines dependable
Playwright cautions that browser rendering can vary with host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other conditions. Its guidance is to run tests in the environment used to generate the baseline. Fonts are especially relevant when checking a specific currency glyph. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.
- Generate and review the baseline with the same operating system, browser project and version, and font setup used for CI comparisons.
- Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing. This helps the capture settle within a run; it does not make output identical across different platforms or font environments. See PageAssertions.
- If repeatable glyph rendering matters, pin or bundle a suitable font and confirm its U+20B9 coverage in the actual browser and environment. No single font family is established here as universally safe.
- Use a screenshot stylesheet only when a deterministic test-specific override is required; make sure it does not conceal the font behavior the test is meant to verify.
- Playwright exposes threshold and other comparison options. A looser pixel threshold can hide differences, but it will not correct a missing or incorrectly rendered glyph.
Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect rupee glyph
- Inspect the fixture and DOM text. Confirm the character is U+20B9, whether entered literally or as
u20B9or₹. Check that it has not been replaced by U+20A8 or a visually similar character. - Inspect the browser output. If the page shows a box or unexpected mark, check the fonts available to the test browser and confirm the selected font has a U+20B9 glyph. Verify the result in the test environment rather than assuming the code point guarantees a particular appearance.
- Align baseline and comparison environments. Use the same browser project, browser version, host conditions, and font setup. If the glyph differs only in CI, compare CI’s rendering setup with the environment that generated the baseline.
- Choose the right screenshot scope. Use a locator assertion to isolate the symbol when only glyph rendering matters; use a page or containing component assertion when placement, spacing, and surrounding layout are part of the test.
- Do not mask the symptom with tolerance. If a threshold change makes the test pass, still review whether the glyph is correct. A tolerance can accept pixel variation, not supply the intended character or font.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot returned directly by an API, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. The request can capture a page that displays the rupee symbol; it does not replace a Playwright Test baseline assertion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright’s screenshot assertion test that the text is U+20B9?
No. A screenshot assertion compares rendered pixels against a baseline; check the DOM text separately if the exact code point is part of the test.
Should I use a page screenshot or a locator screenshot for the rupee sign?
Use a locator when the glyph alone is under test. Choose the page or containing component when its position, spacing, or surrounding layout matters.
