How to Set the Default Audio Device or Speakers in Windows 11 and Windows 10

Set the default audio output in Windows 11 under Settings > System > Sound, or in Windows 10 from the taskbar or the classic Sound dialog, and fix common wrong-device problems.

To set the default audio output in Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Sound and select your speakers, headphones, or other playback device under Output. In Windows 10, choose the device from the volume list on the taskbar, or set it as the permanent default in the classic Sound dialog under Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound. This guide covers both versions, how to tell which device is actually playing, and what to check when sound still does not come out of the right place.

Set the default output in Windows 11

  1. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select the speakers, headphones, or other device you want to use. Microsoft describes this selection as setting the output device, which becomes the default for playback.
  3. Play a short sound, such as a video or a system sound, and confirm that it comes from the hardware you expect. Do not assume Windows chose the right device automatically when several outputs are listed.
  4. If there is still no sound, work through the checks in the troubleshooting section below.

Set the default output in Windows 10

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Since that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, so plan any long-term audio setup with that in mind. The steps below still apply to Windows 10 PCs in use today.

  1. Select the sound icon on the taskbar, then select the arrow beside the volume control to open the list of connected output devices. Choose the one you want.
  2. For a default that persists, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.
  3. On the Playback tab, select the intended device, choose Set as Default Device, and then select OK.
  4. Play a test sound. If it still fails, open the device’s properties and confirm that Use this device (enable) is selected.

Choose the right output when several are listed

A USB headset or speaker, a television connected over HDMI, or a display’s built-in audio output can appear alongside your built-in speakers. Sound goes to whichever device is selected, so the most common cause of “no sound” is a correct device with the wrong output chosen.

Microsoft’s guidance on this point is direct: “If you’re connecting to an audio device—such as headphones or speakers—using USB or HDMI, you might need to set that device as the default audio device.” (Microsoft Support, Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.)

Work through these checks in order. Each step is a troubleshooting option, and none is guaranteed to fix every case.

1. Check the connection, volume, and mute state

  • Confirm the USB or HDMI cable is firmly connected, and that the device is powered on.
  • Check the system volume and the volume of the individual app. An app can be muted or turned down even when the system volume is fine.
  • Make sure the speaker or headphone icon is not showing a mute symbol.

4. Handle a device Windows does not list

Playback output is not the same as recording input

The steps above choose where sound plays. Microphones and other recording devices are set separately. In Windows 10, use the Recording tab in the classic Sound dialog. Changing your playback default does not change your microphone, and the reverse is also true.
