In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Under Apps, find the running game or app and choose the device you want from its Output list. If it remains silent, check its app-specific volume and mute setting.
Set an app’s audio output in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find the game or app. It may need to be running before it appears in the list.
- Open the app’s Output control and select the intended playback device, such as your headset or speakers.
- Check that the app is not muted and raise its app-specific volume if needed.
- Return to the app and test the sound. Its output can differ from the system-wide default, so you can route a game to a headset while other audio continues through speakers. Exact labels can vary with Windows updates. Microsoft’s app-audio instructions cover Windows 11 and Windows 10.
If the output device is missing or the app is still silent
Confirm Windows can see the device
If the intended device is not in the app’s Output list, check Windows’ system sound settings and the device’s properties to confirm it is detected and enabled. Microsoft’s general Windows sound troubleshooting guide covers output-device and playback checks.

Check the app’s own controls
Verify the app’s Volume mixer slider is up and its mute control is off. App-level volume and mute settings can silence one app even when system sounds are audible.
Restart audio services or update the driver
If routing and volume checks do not help, Microsoft recommends restarting Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then testing again. Updating the audio driver is another troubleshooting measure. These steps are for persistent audio problems, not normally necessary just to change an app’s output.

Windows 10: different route, with an end-of-support caveat
Microsoft’s Windows 10 instructions use a different path: right-click the taskbar volume icon, choose Sounds, and check the Playback tab and default device. Then return to Volume mixer to confirm the app’s device. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the route and available labels may vary by version and updates.
