Close Steam normally before shutting down. Doing this ahead of time matters: Steam says you cannot bypass a login request once you are offline, and some games still require a connection or an external launcher.
Prepare Steam and your games while you are online
Steam Support describes Offline Mode as a way to play games through Steam without an active connection to the Steam Network. It is not a substitute for preparing the client and titles in advance. Steam needs to have saved the information required to start offline, and a game may need a connected first launch or an update before it is ready.

- Sign in with Remember me enabled. Open the Steam desktop client while connected. At the login window, check Remember me before signing in. If Steam later asks you to log in after the connection is gone, Steam says there is no way to bypass that requirement without going online.
- Update the games you intend to play. Let each game’s update finish before moving on. Steam and games do not receive updates in Offline Mode, so an update still waiting to download can prevent you from using the current files you expect.
- Launch each game once while connected. Open every intended title, let its first launch and any required downloads or installation finish, confirm that it reaches a playable state, then exit back to Steam. Steam says most games need this initial connected launch. A title showing “100% – Ready” is not, by itself, proof that it will work offline.
- Check that Steam can save your credentials. In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Security. Confirm that Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected. If that setting is selected, Steam may not retain the information it needs for Offline Mode.
- Switch Steam to Offline Mode. From the main Steam window, choose Steam > Go Offline… and follow any confirmation shown by the client.
- Exit Steam normally. Before shutting down or disconnecting, close the client manually rather than force quitting it. Steam recommends a normal exit because stored information is needed for Offline Mode.
Check whether each game is a realistic offline candidate
Steam’s Offline Mode setting affects the Steam client; it cannot remove a game’s own network requirement or make a separate launcher available. Assess each title individually before you lose access.

Steam’s own caution is specific: “Games that require an active connection or use an external launcher will not work in offline mode.” If a title falls into either category, changing Steam’s setting will not make it playable without a network. If it passes the checks, that is still a practical readiness check, not a guarantee for every individual game.

What Offline Mode disables—and what it does not do
Offline Mode allows supported games to be played through Steam without an active connection to Steam’s network. Features that require a connection are unavailable, and Steam and games cannot receive updates until the client is online again. The mode does not make a network-dependent game independent of its own service, and it does not keep cloud data synchronized while you play.
Protect your saves when you reconnect
Steam Cloud does not sync a game while Steam is offline. Progress made offline therefore remains local until synchronization can resume, while the cloud may still reflect the last state that synced online. Steam warns that playing offline is very likely to cause a conflict when you return online. Cloud data can include save files and other game-specific data, and Steam cautions that support may not be able to recover lost data.

- When you have a connection again, open Steam and allow synchronization to finish.
- If Steam presents a conflict prompt, read it carefully before choosing which save copy to keep. The prompt is asking you to resolve differing versions; choosing the wrong copy can discard the progress you meant to preserve.
- Do not assume that local offline progress has already replaced the cloud copy. Check the choices presented by Steam before confirming.
Troubleshoot common Offline Mode failures
Steam asks for a login after the connection is gone
Steam says there is no way to bypass a login requirement without going online. The reliable prevention is to sign in while connected with Remember me checked and verify that Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected in Steam > Settings > Security. If Steam is already asking for credentials and you have no connection, the documented recovery is to go online; do not expect Offline Mode to bypass the prompt.
A game shows “100% – Ready” but will not start
Steam’s Offline Mode FAQ notes that “100% – Ready” does not necessarily mean the game is ready for offline play. Steam says the Steam client and/or the game files may need updating. Reconnect, let any available client or game updates complete, then launch the title online again before trying Offline Mode.

The game opens Steam but still needs the internet
Check whether the game requires an active connection or relies on an external launcher. Steam identifies both as reasons a game will not work offline. Its Offline Mode control cannot override those requirements.
Steam Cloud shows a save conflict
Offline play stops cloud synchronization, so a prompt after reconnecting is possible. Compare the available copies and choose deliberately; Steam warns that lost cloud data may not be recoverable through support.

When to reconnect
Reconnect periodically when you can. Steam recommends doing so because neither Steam nor your games receive updates while offline. A later update may affect what is available to play, so prepare again before the next period without internet: let updates finish, launch the games you plan to use, and switch to Offline Mode before disconnecting.
