1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo prevent surprise game charges, set controls on the account and payment route that actually process each purchase. A parent may need to configure more than one store: a console setting, for example, will not necessarily cover a game publisher’s separate checkout or a purchase billed through a different app store.
Approval and a spending limit solve different problems. Approval asks an adult to authorize an eligible purchase before it goes through. A spending cap limits the money available to spend, often by using a funded account balance. Neither control should be assumed to cover every download, subscription, in-game item, or virtual-currency transaction.

Start by finding the account that charges for each purchase
Before changing settings, list the devices and accounts your child can use: phones and tablets, consoles, PC game stores, and publisher accounts. Then work out how each game purchase is billed. The same game may offer purchases through a device’s app store, a console or PC platform, or a publisher’s own payment flow. A control generally applies only within the store or payment system that provides it.
Start with a recent receipt, purchase history, or payment statement if you are trying to trace a charge that already happened. Look for the store or service named as the seller or processor; the device the child used is not enough to identify the payment route. For future purchases, check the checkout screen and the account signed in to the store before relying on a family setting. A single game can use one route for buying the game and another for optional in-game purchases.

- List the devices and accounts. Include app-store accounts, console accounts, PC storefront accounts, and separate game or publisher accounts. If the child uses more than one account or device, include each one.
- Identify the checkout route. Check the store receipt, purchase history, or payment statement for the service that processed a transaction. Do not infer the billing route just from the device the child used.
- Enable an approval rule where available. Choose a setting that covers the kind of purchase you want reviewed, such as in-app purchases, rather than assuming a general download rule covers everything.
- Set a defined budget separately if you need a ceiling. Use a funded balance on services that support one, or a monthly spending limit where available. A request-and-approval setting alone is not a budget.
- Check in-game spending and virtual currency. Determine whether the purchase is processed by the platform or by the game publisher, and whether the relevant control covers it.
- Verify the result. Test with a harmless eligible request or check the parent’s notifications and purchase history. Recheck after a device, account, operating-system, or region change.
These steps are a practical starting point, not a promise that one setting blocks every route. The platform controls below were described in official support pages accessed on October 13, 2026; menus, eligibility, and regional behavior can change.
Approval versus a spending limit
| Control | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase approval | Routes eligible purchases to an adult for a decision before they are completed. | Which purchases trigger a request, who receives it, and whether subscriptions, certain content, external checkouts, or virtual currency are excluded. |
| Funded balance | Restricts spending to money already available in the child’s account, where the service supports this approach. | Whether the account can be topped up without approval, whether other payment methods remain available, and what happens when funds run out. |
| Monthly spending limit | Sets a spending ceiling for purchases covered by that platform’s stated control. | Which store purchases count toward the limit and whether the setting is available for the child’s account and region. |
A request workflow gives an adult a chance to consider each covered transaction; a balance is a budget only if the child cannot bypass it by using another payment method or store. To make a limit meaningful, look for other available payment routes as well as the setting itself.
When comparing platforms, ask five separate questions: Is the control a request or a ceiling? Does it cover downloads, paid apps, subscriptions, in-app purchases, or only some of these? Which store or payment processor is covered? Does the child’s age, account role, or region affect eligibility? Can a parent see requests, spending notifications, or purchase history? Those distinctions matter more than the label on a menu. A control called “parental controls” may address age-appropriate content without covering every way to pay.
There is no single cross-platform setting that covers every purchase. Microsoft and Nintendo describe balance-based budgeting approaches, PlayStation offers a monthly store-spending limit, and Steam describes a cart request workflow rather than a stated monthly cap. Google Play and Apple describe approval mechanisms for eligible purchases. Epic’s controls are specific to Epic payments. Choose a combination that matches the child’s stores and the outcome you want, and remember that adding funds is not the same as approving each item.
Google Play: choose which purchases need approval
A Google family manager can choose the family member’s “Purchase & download approvals” category. The listed choices include all content, purchases using the family payment method, in-app purchases, or no approval. Select the narrowest category that matches the intended rule; choosing one category should not be treated as proof that other types are covered.
Google Play states that purchase approval settings apply only to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system. They therefore do not automatically govern a game’s separate web checkout or a purchase processed by another platform. For a game that supports more than one checkout route, identify which route the child is using before relying on this setting.
Google also notes that some content and subscription categories are excluded from purchase requests, and that behavior can vary depending on whether a family payment method is configured. Review the actual approval options and the family payment setup rather than assuming that every paid item will generate a request. These details come from Google Play Help, accessed October 13, 2026.

Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Apps & Websites > Restrictions > Ask to Buy > Require Purchase Approval
Enable “Require Purchase Approval” for the child. The child’s age and country or region can affect defaults and whether the child can turn the setting off, so do not assume every family sees the same controls or behavior. Apple also describes newer iOS and iPadOS behavior for requesting exceptions to certain limits. Confirm the operating-system version and region before following steps from a different device or support page.
Ask to Buy is an approval mechanism for eligible purchases, not a universal spending ceiling. Check which transaction types are eligible in the child’s account, and identify the payment route for any game that offers checkout outside Apple’s billing flow. Apple’s support article was available at the time of access on October 13, 2026.
If the menu labels do not match, first confirm that the child is in the family group and check the current Apple guidance for the device’s software version. Age and regional eligibility can change what is available, so a missing option does not necessarily mean the family account has no purchase controls. Do not promise that the same request behavior applies to every child or every kind of transaction.
Microsoft and Xbox: require approval or fund a set balance
Microsoft describes two distinct approaches through Family Safety. For a child account with a credit card, enable “Require approval for every purchase” under Manage spending. This is the closer fit if you want an adult to review each covered purchase rather than letting the child spend directly from a card.
For a defined budget without adding a credit card, put a chosen amount into the child’s Microsoft account balance. Microsoft says “their account cannot be overdrawn.” Its guidance also describes approval when a purchase exceeds the child’s age limit or when funds run out. The balance approach sets available funds; it is not the same as an approval prompt on every transaction.

These controls concern the Microsoft account and store purchases covered by Microsoft’s system. Do not assume they control a charge billed directly by an unrelated publisher or a different platform. The settings and balance behavior described here are from Microsoft Support, accessed October 13, 2026.
Choose the route based on the goal: requiring approval for every covered purchase is suited to adult review, while adding a set balance gives the child access to a defined amount. If funds run out, Microsoft’s guidance describes approval in that situation; do not interpret this as permission to use an unrelated payment method. Check whether a card or other account is available elsewhere in the game or store, since it could create a separate payment route.
Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Account: restrictions are not the same as a budget
A parent or guardian Nintendo Account in a family group can set purchase restrictions for a child or supervised account. Nintendo’s guidance says those restrictions can cover eShop purchases and some in-game items. Separate age-based restrictions control which content is visible in the eShop; visibility restrictions and purchase restrictions address different risks.

Nintendo also describes using a fixed account balance to give a child a defined budget. Keep that separate from purchase restrictions: Nintendo lists some balance top-ups or code redemptions among actions that purchase restrictions do not block, even though spending money already added to the balance can be controlled. If you rely on a fixed balance, consider how the account could receive additional funds.
Check the account’s country and whether the child uses a Switch 2, Switch, or Switch Lite before following device-specific navigation. The applicable controls and menus may depend on the device and region. These details are from Nintendo’s official support guidance accessed October 13, 2026.
Think of Nintendo’s age-based visibility options and purchase restrictions as separate layers: one concerns what appears in the eShop, while the other concerns buying. Neither should be mistaken for a universally enforced allowance. A defined balance can make the budget tangible, but check the account’s ability to receive more funds, including top-ups or code redemptions that may not be blocked by purchase restrictions.
Steam: let a child request payment for a cart
Steam Families is the current family feature set that replaces Steam Family Sharing and Family View. An adult can create a family, assign a child role to an account, and configure parental controls. For purchases, Steam describes a request workflow: “Children can request an adult in the family to pay for their shopping cart.”
The adult can approve and pay through a mobile device or email. Once approved, the game is added to the child’s account. This provides a decision point before the adult pays for the requested cart. Steam’s documented workflow is request-based; a monthly spending cap is not stated in the support guidance referenced here. If you need a fixed ceiling, do not treat the request feature as an equivalent budget control. These details come from Steam Support, accessed October 13, 2026.
Recommended Free Tools
For a Steam household, check that the accounts are in the family and that the child role and parental controls are configured. The described approval is for an adult to pay for the child’s shopping cart; it is not evidence of a general spending cap across the child’s other stores or payment methods. Use the request flow when you want an adult to decide whether to pay for a specific cart.
Epic Games: publisher controls cover only Epic payments
Epic’s parental-control page describes purchase controls for payments made through Epic. It explicitly excludes payments made on other platforms, including PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, and purchases made with in-game currencies such as V-Bucks. If the charge is processed by a console or another store, configure the control with that platform instead of relying on Epic’s setting.
Epic describes a daily spending threshold for accounts where the user indicates an age under 13. Treat that as a rule limited to the Epic-payment context, not as a general allowance across games or devices. Verify the child’s account details and market before relying on the threshold because account rules and availability may vary. The scope and exclusions described here come from Epic’s parental-controls page, accessed October 13, 2026.
The important distinction is who processes the payment. A setting on the publisher account cannot be assumed to block a transaction billed by a console or PC platform, and Epic’s stated exclusion for purchases made with in-game currency means that restricting Epic payments is not the same as preventing every use of virtual currency. Identify where the currency or item is bought and which account is charged.

PlayStation: a monthly limit is available through family controls
The PlayStation Family App overview says parents can manage a child’s PlayStation Store spending by adding funds, viewing balances, and setting a monthly spending limit. This is a platform-specific control for the child’s PlayStation Store purchases, not a universal control for every purchase the child might make on another device or through a separate publisher checkout.
The official overview establishes that the monthly limit exists, but it does not establish the current menu-by-menu setup path for every PS5, account, and region configuration. Use the current PlayStation support guidance for the family account’s region before changing settings. Do not rely on a navigation path copied from a different region or older account interface. This description is based on the PlayStation Family App overview accessed October 13, 2026.
Adding funds, viewing the remaining balance, and setting a monthly limit are related but distinct tasks. Decide whether you want to manage what is available in the account or impose a monthly ceiling for covered PlayStation Store purchases. Then verify the actual child account and region-specific instructions in the current app or support materials rather than assuming a menu path will match every setup.

After setup, confirm the child account’s role and the selected purchase category, then check that the parent can receive or view the expected approval request. If the platform offers activity reporting or purchase history, use it to confirm which account and store processed past transactions. For any test, choose an eligible, harmless request and do not complete a real charge unless you intend to make that purchase.

- A request did not appear: the item may be outside the selected approval category, excluded by the platform, or billed through another store or publisher. Check the receipt or purchase history to identify the processor.
- A child spent beyond the intended budget: check whether a payment card, other store account, additional top-up, or in-game currency route remained available. A funded balance only constrains spending through that balance.
- The setting is missing or looks different: confirm the child’s account role, age, region, device, and operating-system version. Some rules and menus vary by those factors.
- A game still offers purchases after restrictions are enabled: distinguish the ability to open or play a game from the ability to buy through a particular checkout. Configure the service that processes the transaction.
Recheck settings when the child gets a new device, joins another family account, changes region, or updates the operating system. A purchase control is only as broad as the account and billing flow it governs.
For a final audit, compare the result against the original goal. If the goal is advance permission, look for the expected request and ensure the right adult receives it. If the goal is a firm ceiling, check the balance or spending-limit display and consider whether the child can add funds or use another store. Keep purchase history or notification features enabled where available so unexpected activity can be traced to the service that processed it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I stop my kid from buying games?
Start by identifying every device, store account, and payment route the child can use. Turn on purchase approval for eligible purchases where available, and check that the rule applies to the relevant game store rather than only to the device or publisher account. For a stricter budget, use a supported account balance or monthly store limit and check for other payment methods or top-ups.
Can I require approval for in-app purchases?
Some services offer approval options that include in-app purchases. Google Play lists an in-app purchases approval category, but it only applies to transactions made through Google Play billing. Apple describes Ask to Buy for eligible purchases; check the child’s age, region, device software, and the current eligibility rules. A game’s separate web checkout or another platform’s billing flow may need its own control.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I set a spending limit on Xbox or PlayStation?
Microsoft Family Safety describes requiring approval for every purchase on a child account with a credit card, or funding the child’s Microsoft account with a set amount when you want a balance-based budget. PlayStation’s Family App overview describes adding funds, viewing balances, and setting a monthly spending limit for a child’s PlayStation Store purchases. Use current account- and region-specific instructions, and do not assume either control covers purchases billed elsewhere.
Best Value
Does a spending limit require approval for every purchase?
No. A balance or monthly ceiling limits available spending for purchases covered by that service, but it is not necessarily a request workflow. Conversely, an approval setting asks an adult to decide on eligible transactions but is not automatically a monthly budget. Choose the control that matches your goal, and check whether another payment route can bypass it.
Why did a purchase go through without a request?
The transaction might be outside the selected approval category, excluded by the service, or billed by another store or publisher. Some Google Play content and subscription categories are excluded from requests, and Google Play approval settings apply only to Google Play billing. Check the receipt or transaction history, then configure the account that actually handled the charge.
Will publisher controls stop purchases on a console?
Not necessarily. Epic states that its purchase controls do not cover payments made through platforms such as PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch, or purchases made with in-game currencies such as V-Bucks. Set controls with the platform that processes the payment, and examine virtual-currency purchases separately.
Do I need to check settings again after a device or region change?
Yes. Account roles, age rules, regional availability, device navigation, and operating-system behavior can affect what settings are available. Revisit the family controls after a new device, account, software update, or region change, and confirm that requests and spending activity appear as expected.
