In Playwright, threshold controls the first; maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio control the second. Start with repeatable captures and strict comparisons, inspect real diffs, and allow only the smallest tolerances that absorb harmless rendering variation without hiding meaningful UI changes.
What screenshot thresholds control
Playwright Test uses the pixelmatch library for screenshot comparisons. Its visual comparisons guide defines threshold as the acceptable perceived color difference between corresponding pixels. The SnapshotAssertions API reference describes comparison in YIQ color space.
thresholdis a per-pixel color tolerance: it determines whether a corresponding pixel pair counts as different.maxDiffPixelsis the maximum number of pixels in the whole image allowed to count as different.maxDiffPixelRatiois the maximum permitted proportion of changed pixels in the whole image.
These controls are distinct. A threshold of 0.2 does not mean that 20% of the screenshot may differ; it is Playwright’s documented default for per-pixel color comparison. The aggregate limits are unset by default, so any counted difference can fail unless you configure a limit.
How to choose a threshold in practice
Playwright documents 0.2 as the default threshold; 0 is stricter and 1 is more permissive. The documentation does not prescribe one universal value for an application. Use the default as a starting point, not as a promise that every page or rendering environment needs no adjustment.

#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Choose meaningful screenshot states. Cover the page layouts and UI states where visual regressions matter. Keep browser, viewport, fonts, data, and capture timing consistent wherever your project controls them.
- Begin with strict comparison. Run representative tests, then inspect the actual expected and received images. Do not choose a loose number before seeing what is causing the differences.
- Stabilize capture inputs. Fix changing content or timing at its source where possible. Playwright retries screenshot assertions until consecutive screenshots match; it also documents ways to hide or neutralize volatile elements.
- Classify the remaining noise. If corresponding pixels differ slightly in color, consider a small change to
threshold. If a small, understood area still differs, consider a lowmaxDiffPixelsormaxDiffPixelRatio. Do not use an aggregate allowance to conceal a large changed region. - Keep exceptions narrow. Configure tolerances on the sensitive assertion or project rather than weakening unrelated screenshots with one broad global allowance.
- Review intentional UI changes. Approve the change and update its reference screenshot using Playwright’s documented
--update-snapshotsworkflow. Raising a threshold is not a substitute for reviewing an expected design change.
Playwright example: configure both kinds of tolerance
Use assertion-level options when only one screenshot needs a different allowance. This example is runnable inside a Playwright Test test file; replace the URL and snapshot name with the page and state your test covers.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('account page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/account');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account-page.png', {
threshold: 0.2,
maxDiffPixels: 25,
});
});
Here, threshold uses the documented default, while maxDiffPixels allows at most 25 pixels to count as different. That count is an example setting, not a recommended universal tolerance. Remove the aggregate limit for strict comparison, or establish an appropriate limit from reviewed diffs on your own stable captures.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
For a ratio-based limit, use maxDiffPixelRatio instead of a count when a proportional allowance better fits screenshots with different dimensions. The options are alternatives for controlling aggregate changed area; they do not replace the per-pixel color threshold. Playwright supports screenshot assertion settings both on an individual assertion and in shared test configuration.
Make captures repeatable before loosening tolerances
A threshold can absorb small rendering noise, but it cannot make an unstable capture trustworthy. Playwright’s guide recommends controlling volatile elements, including with a custom stylesheet that hides or neutralizes them. Avoid capturing incidental hover states unless hover is the state under test.

Common threshold problems and fixes
Every tiny rendering change fails
Check whether the capture environment or page content changes between runs. Stabilize those inputs first. If the remaining difference is a minor color variation between corresponding pixels, test a modestly higher threshold and verify that meaningful changes still fail.
A large visual change passes
Review whether threshold is too permissive or whether maxDiffPixels or maxDiffPixelRatio allows too much changed area. Lower the relevant allowance and inspect the diff. A per-pixel tolerance and an aggregate limit can mask different kinds of change.

The same screenshot fails intermittently
Look for dynamic content, hover effects, animation, asynchronous loading, or inconsistent data. Playwright retries screenshot assertions until consecutive screenshots match, but retries do not replace making the captured state deterministic.
An intentional redesign keeps failing
Review the received screenshot, then update the baseline through the documented Playwright snapshot update workflow, such as --update-snapshots. Do not expand tolerances merely to accept a known, reviewed design change.

If you need rendered screenshots for a visual workflow but do not want to build and maintain capture infrastructure, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request; it is a capture service, not a replacement for Playwright’s visual-diff assertions or baseline review.
Example request, using the API parameters shown in the ScreenshotNeo documentation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
