How to Keep an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Running on a Raspberry Pi During Indian Monsoon Outages

A Pi-only battery cannot keep a YouTube stream alive through a power cut. Back up the full chain, tune FFmpeg to measured upload and test recovery before relying on it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Raspberry Pi stream survives a monsoon power cut only if the whole chain survives: the Pi, its video input, network equipment and internet connection all need power and a working connection. Match the power supply to your exact Pi model, keep the stream bitrate below measured upload capacity, back up every essential device, then test power-loss and network recovery on your actual setup. A Pi battery by itself cannot keep a stream online if the router, modem or camera loses power.

What has to keep working for the stream to stay live?

An FFmpeg process can keep sending video only while its input, power and route to YouTube remain available. Before choosing a UPS or changing encoder settings, map every part of the stream path.

  • Video source: the camera, capture device or file storage that FFmpeg reads. Include any separately powered camera, capture card or USB device.
  • Encoder: the Raspberry Pi and any attached storage, cooling or other peripherals.
  • Local network: router, modem or optical network terminal (ONT), and any switch needed to connect the Pi.
  • Internet service: the ISP connection and any upstream network equipment on which it depends.
  • YouTube configuration: the live event, ingest address and stream key configured in YouTube Live Control Room.

Make a simple inventory of what is mains-powered and what must stay on. If any required component loses power or connectivity, the stream can stop even when the Pi itself is running.

How should I power a Raspberry Pi for an unattended stream?

Match the supply to the exact board

Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance recommends an official power supply suitable for the model. Its model-specific recommendations include 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi 500; using a 5 V, 3 A supply with those models limits peripheral power to 600 mA. Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400 are listed at 5 V, 3 A, while Raspberry Pi 3 is listed at 5 V, 2.5 A. Check Raspberry Pi’s current documentation for your exact board before buying or wiring a backup supply: model availability and power guidance can change.

Those are supply recommendations, not a measurement of the stream’s actual power draw and not a prediction of battery runtime. USB devices, storage, cooling, cable length and voltage drop can all affect whether the Pi remains stable. A supply or battery that is nominally rated for the board may still be unsuitable for the complete connected load.

Back up the complete chain, not just the Pi

Put every essential powered component on backup: the Pi, its input device if separately powered, and the router, modem or ONT and switch needed for internet access. Check the backup unit’s output, connectors, transfer behavior and usable runtime under the actual load. A Raspberry Pi UPS or battery backup is useful only if it can power the attached devices your setup depends on.

There is no defensible universal UPS size or runtime for this installation without the exact equipment and measured load. A unit’s advertised capacity or a supply’s maximum rating is not the same as runtime under your stream’s load. Test your assembled setup rather than assuming a published figure will apply.

Will my internet work during a power outage in India?

It depends on the service and equipment at your address. A backed-up router cannot guarantee that an ISP’s local equipment, fibre path or mobile network remains available through a power cut. Ask your provider about the connection serving your location and test it during an actual or controlled outage. If you add a backup connection, consider whether it shares the same vulnerable equipment or power source as the primary one. There is no established India-wide provider recommendation that can answer this for every address.

Which FFmpeg and YouTube settings should I use?

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the compatibility baseline, then choose a conservative setting that fits your measured upload and the Pi’s ability to handle the input. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it advises not exceeding four seconds. Follow the codec and audio options currently listed in YouTube Live Control Room and its encoder guidance, because recommendations can change.

Choose bitrate from measured upload, not the advertised plan

YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused: the total stream bitrate should not exceed the remaining capacity. Measure stable outbound upload at the location and at the times the stream will run. If other devices share the connection, account for their traffic too. A result from a quiet moment is not a guarantee of sustained upload during busy periods or an outage.

YouTube’s currently surfaced H.264 recommendations include the following. They are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of what a particular Pi can encode or what a variable internet connection can sustain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
H.264 output YouTube recommended bitrate YouTube listed minimum
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 2 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 6 Mbps

These figures are codec-specific and should be checked against YouTube’s live guidance before configuring a stream. Leave the recommended upload headroom above the aggregate bitrate, including audio. If the connection cannot sustain the desired output with margin, lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate rather than running at the link’s limit.

Consider whether FFmpeg needs to encode

If your source is already in a format YouTube accepts and does not need resizing or other changes, stream-copying may avoid a video re-encode. If FFmpeg must encode, the Pi has to handle the selected codec, resolution and frame rate in real time; capability depends on the Pi model, software, input path and settings. Do not assume a YouTube bitrate recommendation proves that a Pi can encode it. Test the complete workload and watch for dropped frames, overheating or encoder errors.

How do I start FFmpeg and restart it after a disconnect?

First create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the ingest address and stream key shown there, and use the current values and instructions displayed for that event. Do not put the stream key in a public script, screenshot, command history or support post; treat it like a password.

The following is a configuration pattern for a file-based stream, not a universal command. Replace the input path, ingest address, key, frame rate and bitrate with values that match your source, YouTube event and measured connection. For a live camera or capture device, the input options are device- and operating-system-specific; substitute and test the correct input rather than copying the file input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "<INGEST_ADDRESS>/<STREAM_KEY>"

In this example, the selected video bitrate is 2,500 kbps and the keyframe interval is 60 frames. At 30 fps, that is a two-second interval; if you change frame rate, recalculate the GOP length so the keyframe interval remains two seconds. The bitrate is only an example, not a recommendation for every connection or video. Confirm the codec, audio format, ingest URL structure and settings against the current YouTube instructions shown for your event. The -stream_loop -1 and -re options are for reading a file repeatedly at its natural rate; remove or adapt them for a live input.

Use a service manager to recover from an FFmpeg process exit

For a headless Linux installation using systemd, a service can start FFmpeg after boot and retry it after a process exit. Keep the command in a script with restricted permissions or use a protected environment file for secrets. For example, save your tested command in /usr/local/bin/youtube-stream.sh, make it executable, and create a service unit such as:

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-stream.env
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/youtube-stream.sh
Restart=always
RestartSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

In the script, use the environment variable for the key rather than writing it in a world-readable file; restrict access to both the script and /etc/youtube-stream.env. Then enable and start the service with:

sudo chmod 700 /usr/local/bin/youtube-stream.sh
sudo chmod 600 /etc/youtube-stream.env
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service
journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f

Adapt permissions and ownership to the user that runs the service. Validate the unit on the OS image you actually use. A service manager can retry FFmpeg when it exits; it cannot restore a failed camera, internet connection, invalid stream key, exhausted battery or damaged storage. A network drop may not make FFmpeg exit immediately, so a restart policy alone is not proof that reconnect will work. Test both process-exit recovery and temporary network-loss behavior separately, and verify that YouTube receives video again.

How should I test the setup before relying on it?

Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using the complete deployed chain, and monitor YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube advises testing the full stream before going live, monitoring stream health and checking backup-encoder failover. A controlled test should exercise the failure modes your setup is meant to handle.

  1. Test ordinary streaming: confirm video and audio reach YouTube, check stream health and watch for dropped frames or encoding errors.
  2. Test mains transfer: interrupt mains to the backup unit under controlled conditions. Confirm that the Pi does not reboot or show undervoltage, the input remains available, and every required network device stays on.
  3. Test a network interruption: interrupt the connection in a controlled way, restore it, and observe whether FFmpeg reconnects or exits and whether YouTube receives the stream again.
  4. Test process restart: stop the FFmpeg process deliberately and confirm the service manager retries it, then check the stream in Live Control Room.
  5. Test power restoration: verify the equipment boots in the intended order after a full shutdown or outage and that the service starts without manual login.
  6. Test battery exhaustion safely: if the UPS exposes status and your setup supports it, verify that it can trigger a clean shutdown before power is lost. Do not deliberately corrupt storage to test this.

These are recommended checks, not a claim that a particular Pi, UPS or ISP has been tested here. Raspberry Pi documentation warns that sudden power loss can risk storage integrity. If a backup unit provides battery-status signalling, configure and test a graceful shutdown path rather than relying on the Pi’s ordinary power supply or an RTC battery for outage protection.

What commonly stops a Raspberry Pi stream, and how do I recover?

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Pi reboots or reports undervoltage Inadequate supply, voltage loss through a cable, or connected peripherals drawing more power than expected Confirm model-specific supply guidance, inspect cables and connectors, and test with the actual peripherals attached.
Pi stays on but the stream disappears during a cut Router, modem/ONT, switch, camera or capture device lost power Back up every required powered component and repeat a controlled mains-transfer test.
FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no incoming video Network is down, ingest address or key is wrong, or the source/input has failed Check the input, internet connection, current event credentials and FFmpeg logs. If a key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the protected configuration.
FFmpeg exits and stays stopped No process supervision, invalid options, missing input or another fatal error Inspect the service status and journal, correct the underlying error, and verify the restart policy with a controlled process-stop test.
Network drops but FFmpeg does not exit The process is still running while its network connection is unusable Do not rely only on an exit-based restart policy. Test the deployed FFmpeg behavior after a network drop and select a recovery approach that you have verified.
YouTube reports poor stream health or frames are dropped Upload is unstable or overcommitted, encoding cannot keep pace, or settings do not suit the connection Check stream health, remeasure upload under realistic conditions, preserve 20% headroom and reduce output demands if needed.
The stream fails after the battery runs down Backup runtime is shorter than the outage or shutdown begins too late Measure runtime under the full deployed load and configure a tested clean shutdown if the UPS and system support battery status.
