What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set a fixed browser viewport width and height in CSS pixels before navigating to the website, then choose separately whether to capture the visible viewport or the full page. If you need more bitmap detail, set a device scale factor; it changes output pixel dimensions without necessarily changing the responsive layout. Keep those choices consistent in the configuration used for every scheduled run.
Which dimensions should you set?
There are two different dimensions to think about: the browser viewport, which determines how the page lays out, and the screenshot bitmap, which determines the image’s pixel dimensions. They are related, but they are not always identical.

- Viewport width and height: measured in CSS pixels. These values influence responsive breakpoints and the visible browser area.
- Output scale: a device scale factor or equivalent setting multiplies bitmap dimensions. A higher scale can create a sharper, larger file without changing the CSS viewport.
- Capture extent: choose the viewport, full scrollable page, a selected element, or a clipped region. This is separate from viewport sizing.
Choose a viewport that represents the layout you need to monitor—such as a desktop or mobile state. For recurring comparisons, keep viewport, scale, capture extent, and relevant browser settings unchanged. If you need to compare different device layouts, define a separate stable configuration for each one rather than forcing every site or device into the same dimensions.

In Playwright, set the viewport before navigating. The documented API is page.setViewportSize({ width: 640, height: 480 }); replace those example values with your target dimensions. Playwright notes that many websites do not expect the viewport to change after navigation, so apply the size first. See the Playwright Page API.

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png' });

})();
For a whole-page image rather than only the visible viewport, use the screenshot option fullPage: true:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png', fullPage: true });
Use that option only when the full scrollable document is the intended output; a full-page capture can be much taller than the configured viewport.

Set dimensions with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s page viewport is likewise separate from screenshot extent. Set it before navigation, then use fullPage when you need the complete scrollable page. Puppeteer’s screenshot options also include clip, type, quality, and omitBackground. The precise accepted options and defaults depend on the installed version; the current documented ScreenshotOptions page identifies version 25.12.0. See Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
For a full-page capture, change the screenshot call to await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png', fullPage: true }). To capture only a region or element, use Puppeteer’s documented clipping or element screenshot approach rather than changing the viewport to imitate a crop.

Choose CSS-pixel or higher-resolution output
At a scale factor of 1, output bitmap dimensions generally match the CSS-pixel dimensions of the capture area. A device scale factor greater than 1 produces more bitmap pixels for the same CSS layout. That can improve detail, but it also increases image dimensions and typically the file size.
For example, shot-scraper documents that a 390 × 844 CSS-pixel capture at scale factor 3 yields a 1170 × 2532-pixel image. This is an illustration of the multiplication, not a universal recommended size. See the shot-scraper documentation.

Use shot-scraper for repeatable command-line captures
shot-scraper provides command-line width and height controls, a scale-factor option, and multi-shot configuration. Its configuration approach is useful when a scheduled job captures several pages: store the intended settings centrally and apply them to each relevant capture. Do not assume every page should share a viewport if the goal is to compare different responsive layouts. The documentation’s release PDF is identified as Release 1.11-3-g760c114; check the version installed in your environment when relying on exact option behavior. See shot-scraper documentation.
Make scheduled captures consistent
- Define the target layout. Decide whether each recurring capture represents a desktop, tablet, or mobile viewport and choose its CSS-pixel width and height.
- Choose the capture area. Specify viewport, full page, element, or clip. Keep this choice distinct from viewport size.
- Choose output resolution. Use scale 1 for a bitmap close to CSS-pixel dimensions, or a higher scale when additional image detail is required.
- Save settings in the job configuration. Apply the same dimensions and relevant browser options on every run instead of resizing after navigation.
- Check the resulting image. Confirm the responsive layout and actual pixel dimensions once the scheduled capture is running; full-page height can vary with page content.
Common problems and fixes
- The layout differs from the intended device. The viewport may be set too late or the width may fall on the wrong side of a responsive breakpoint. Set it before navigation and use the intended CSS-pixel width.
- The output image is larger than expected. Check the device scale factor. A scale factor multiplies bitmap dimensions; reduce it if you need CSS-pixel-sized output.
- The screenshot ends at the visible window. The default capture is viewport-bounded. Enable the tool’s full-page option if the entire scrollable document is required.
- Repeated captures drift in size or appearance. Compare the scheduled job’s viewport, scale, capture extent, and browser configuration with the saved configuration. A manually changed or inconsistent setting can alter the result.
- A full-page screenshot is unexpectedly tall. Full-page capture includes the document’s scrollable area, not just the viewport. Check page content and confirm that full-page output is actually wanted.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; the API supports viewport presets and custom dimensions, scale, full-page capture, and scheduled or automated workflows. Its clean-shot steps can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing the screenshot scale change a site’s responsive layout?
Not necessarily. Viewport width and height determine the CSS layout; scale increases bitmap resolution independently.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I use one viewport size for every scheduled website capture?
Only when you are monitoring the same layout target. Use separate stable configurations when you need distinct mobile, tablet, or desktop views.
