How to Set Screen Time Limits on an Amazon Fire Tablet

Daily screen-time limits live in the Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard, not Settings. Here are the app and browser steps, plus how they differ from screen timeout.

Daily screen-time limits on a Fire tablet are set in the Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard, not in the tablet’s regular Settings menu. In the Parent Dashboard mobile app, tap Daily screen time on the home screen. In the browser version, choose Set up time limits from the dashboard home. You need at least one child profile for either route to work.

Before you start: use a child profile

Amazon’s Parent Dashboard is available to customers who have at least one child profile. If your child currently uses the tablet through your own adult profile, create a child profile first. Amazon says the general Fire Tablet Parental Controls are meant to restrict an adult profile for users 13 and older. For children under 13, Amazon points caregivers to child profiles.

Amazon describes Amazon Kids child profiles as available at no additional cost on compatible devices. Amazon Kids+ is a separate, optional subscription for premium child-friendly content. Amazon’s screen-time instructions do not say it is required.

Set a daily screen-time limit

Option 1: Parent Dashboard mobile app

  1. Open the Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard app and sign in with your Amazon account.
  2. On the home screen, select Daily screen time.
  3. Choose the child profile and set the limits that suit your household.

Option 2: Parent Dashboard in a browser

  1. Sign in to the Parent Dashboard in a web browser with the same Amazon account.
  2. On the dashboard home, select Set up time limits.
  3. Adjust the limits. The browser dashboard also lists controls for weekday and weekend access, which is useful if school days and weekends need different rules.

Amazon’s own wording for this task is “Set daily screen time limits.”

How much time should you allow?

The Amazon support guidance covers where the controls are, not how many minutes a child should get. Any specific number is your decision, based on age, school routine and what the child does on the tablet. It is not an Amazon recommendation.

If your menus look different

Amazon says Kids features vary by device, and that Amazon Kids is available only in select marketplaces. Labels and menus may not match this guide on every model, software version or country. For help inside the dashboard, use More > Help in the app or More > Help Center in the browser. Amazon’s Fire Tablet Help pages cover model-specific differences.

Screen time is not the same as screen timeout

These two settings are easy to confuse.

Setting What it does Where to find it
Daily screen time Limits how long a child can use the tablet each day Parent Dashboard: Daily screen time (app) or Set up time limits (browser)
Screen timeout Controls how long the display stays on when the tablet is idle. It is not a usage allowance. Tablet Settings > Display or Display & Sounds > Display Sleep or Sleep

Shortening the timeout saves battery. It does nothing to limit how long a child plays.

Parental Controls on an adult profile

The general Parental Controls on an adult profile do something different from child-profile time limits. They restrict access to features such as web browsing, purchases, selected content types, wireless connectivity, the camera and location services. They suit teens and older users, and they don’t replace the child profile’s kid-friendly experience for under-13s.
