Agree with your child which recreational apps and games are allowed, when they fit into the day, and what they must not displace. Then use the device’s built-in family controls to set predictable time allowances or schedules. There is no universal daily screen-time quota established specifically for children with ADHD; choose a routine around your child’s sleep, schoolwork, activity, family time, and individual needs.
Start with the routine, not a preset number
First decide what the boundary is meant to cover: one game, a group of games, or all recreational use on a device. Check whether the game itself offers play-time settings, purchase controls, chat restrictions, or parental settings.

Talk through the plan with your child in plain terms. For example, agree that a game is available after homework and ends before the bedtime routine. Make clear what happens when time is up, and follow the plan consistently. A family media plan is more useful than a limit introduced without explanation: ask what your child uses and why, and consider co-viewing or playing together. The AAP parent guidance recommends combining controls with family involvement.

Set limits using the device’s family controls
Start with controls already available for the child’s device. The FTC identifies Apple Family Sharing, Google Family Link, and Microsoft Family Safety as free starting points for families. Exact features and menus depend on the device, software version, and region.
iPhone or iPad: use Screen Time through Family Sharing
Apple’s UK instructions, updated September 23, 2026, describe managing a child’s Screen Time through Family Sharing and the child’s account. Apple says family devices should be updated so settings sync; the latest controls require version 27 software across family devices, while earlier Screen Time may remain available on devices that cannot update. - Set up Family Sharing and the child’s account if you have not already done so.
- On the parent or guardian device, open Settings, tap Family, choose the child, then tap Screen Time.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. Set time allowances for a category such as games, or fine-tune limits for individual categories or apps. Use schedules to define when use is permitted.
- Check that the settings have synced across the family’s devices, then explain the limit and the routine to your child.
Apple says its Time Allowances can set boundaries across app categories such as entertainment, games, and social media. A category allowance is useful when a child uses several games; an individual-app setting is more targeted. Choose the scope that matches the agreement you made with your child.
Android or Windows: begin with the family-management tools
For Android, start with Google Family Link; for Windows, start with Microsoft Family Safety. The FTC’s June 2026 family screen-time guidance identifies both as free options. Use each provider’s up-to-date setup instructions because menus and capabilities can change. Confirm whether the control applies to the device, a category, or a particular game, and whether it blocks use or simply reports it.

Check game settings and what happens when time is up
Device-level limits may not cover every concern. Review the game, gaming platform, and app settings for purchases, downloads, chat, content ratings, and play-time controls. The FTC recommends checking controls on gaming platforms, apps, and websites; on shared devices, a parent PIN or separate profiles can help protect settings and purchases.
Tell your child what to expect when the allowance ends. A visible countdown or timer can act as a transition cue if stopping is difficult, but a timer by itself does not lock an app or enforce a limit. Use the device’s controls for enforcement. CHADD’s 2015 parent resource on screen-smart parenting suggests timers alongside reasonable limits; it is not a guide to current device setup.

Account for learning, assistive, and therapeutic apps individually
Do not assume that every app should count as recreational use—or that a particular app must be exempt. If your child uses an app recommended by a clinician or required for a school accommodation, ask the clinician or school team how to distinguish that use from recreational games in your family’s plan. The appropriate treatment of those minutes depends on the app’s purpose and the child’s circumstances.

Review the boundary against your child’s day
After putting the controls in place, observe how the routine affects sleep, school responsibilities, physical activity, family participation, and emotional regulation. The AAP describes interference with these areas and strong irritability when media ends as possible warning signs of problematic media use, not as a diagnosis. If concerns persist, discuss them with your child’s healthcare provider; CDC guidance emphasizes that children with ADHD differ in their individual health needs.

When comparing controls, check whether they cover a device, category, or single game; enforce a block or only report use; support daily allowances and weekday or weekend schedules; allow parent management from another device; and handle purchases, chat, downloads, or content ratings. Also verify compatibility with your child’s device and software. No single feature set applies universally across platforms, so choose controls that fit your agreement and that you can explain and maintain consistently.
