Roku Volume Leveling is designed to make sound more consistent when you switch between shows, apps, or commercials. On a supported Roku TV, start playing something, press the Star button, then go to Sound Settings > Sound Mode > Customize sound mode > Volume Leveling and choose Low, Medium, or High. The setting is not available on every Roku device, and active volume modes may affect surround-sound output.
What Roku Volume Leveling does
Roku describes Leveling as a way to keep volume more consistent across different kinds of entertainment, reducing the need to adjust it when changing apps or when a commercial begins. Roku Support puts it this way: “Leveling: Enables consistent volume across different types of entertainment so you do not have to change the volume every time you switch apps or a commercial comes on.” This is the intended effect, not a guarantee of identical behavior across every device, app, or audio format.

Roku also lists two other volume modes:
- Off: Leaves audio in its normal mode.
- Leveling: Aims for more consistent volume between content.
- Night: Raises quieter sounds and reduces louder ones, for listening with less disturbance.
Leveling and Night address related but different listening preferences: Leveling targets differences across content, while Night reduces the contrast between quiet and loud sounds.

How to turn on Volume Leveling
On a Roku TV
- Start playing a show or movie.
- Press the Star button on the remote.
- Select Sound Settings > Sound Mode > Customize sound mode.
- Scroll to Volume Leveling and select Low, Medium, or High.
Roku notes that some apps assign a different function to the Star button. If the sound settings do not appear in the app you are using, open another app, such as The Roku Channel, change the setting there, and return to the original app.

On a Roku Streaming Player or Streambar
During playback, Roku’s support instructions give the path Star > Sound Settings > Customize sound mode. For a Streambar, Roku also lists Home > Settings > Audio > Volume mode. The available menu items depend on the model; some Roku streaming devices do not support volume modes.

Choosing Low, Medium, or High
The Leveling controls adjust how even the volume sounds. Roku says Low allows volume to go up and down between shows, commercials, and apps, while High keeps it more even. Roku lists Medium but does not give a more precise technical definition for it in its support guidance.
- Low: Choose this if you want some volume variation to remain.
- Medium: Try it as an available middle setting, but Roku does not specify exactly how it differs from Low or High.
- High: Choose this if your priority is keeping levels more even.
There is no decibel target or universally best level stated by Roku. Adjust the setting to your preference and listening situation.

What to know about surround sound
Roku says volume modes are unavailable for some audio formats. It also warns that streamed movies and shows using surround formats such as Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos may be converted to stereo when a volume mode is active. The wording is conditional: this does not establish that every Roku device converts every surround signal.
If you use an audio/video receiver or soundbar and want to hear a surround format, Roku says you may need to set volume modes to Off. Check the settings and signal path for your particular device and setup if preserving surround output matters; the trade-off is that you may lose the more consistent levels Leveling is meant to provide.

When Speech Clarity may be more relevant
If the main problem is dialogue being hard to understand against music or effects, Roku describes Speech Clarity as a separate feature on supported Roku audio devices. It makes dialogue easier to hear relative to other scene audio without raising the whole scene’s loudness. It is not the same setting as Volume Leveling.
