How to Fix Windows Update Stuck at 0%, 35%, 50%, or 99%

A stuck Windows Update percentage is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Check whether it is still progressing, then use the Windows-version and error-specific troubleshooting steps.

A Windows Update percentage that appears stuck does not, by itself, reveal the cause—or prove that the update has stopped. Check whether the number has changed recently, whether Windows shows an error code, whether the PC still responds, and whether the screen is downloading or installing after a restart. If progress truly has not moved, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than guessing from the percentage.

Why is my Windows update stuck at a certain percentage?

Update time varies with the size of the update, connection speed, and network settings. Microsoft gives no universal time limit for deciding that an update is frozen. A slow-moving screen alone is not enough to diagnose a failure.

A persistent stall can have several causes, including a delayed or incomplete download, a connection problem, too little disk space, stopped update services, driver incompatibility, or damaged system files. The displayed error code and what the PC is doing are more useful clues than the percentage alone. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide explains that time depends on connection speed, network settings, and update size: Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.

Windows Update stuck at 0% or 100%: what to check

Microsoft treats 0% and 100% separately from the 51–99% range. If the update remains at 0% or 100%, first consider whether the device is still downloading or installing and whether it is responsive. Avoid interrupting a visible installation or restart phase. When it is safe to do so, restart the PC, check its internet connection, and check available storage.

  • Restart: Do this when the PC is responsive and is not visibly in the middle of installing or restarting.
  • Connection: Check that the PC can reach the internet; connection trouble can prevent an update from downloading completely.
  • Storage: Check available disk space, particularly if this is a Windows version upgrade.

Windows update stuck at 35%, 50%, or 99%: follow the same troubleshooting path

Microsoft’s percentage-specific guidance covers 51–99%, and a separate case for 0% or 100%; it does not provide distinct rules for exactly 35% or 50%. So treat 35% and 50% as symptoms, not diagnoses. For a persistent stall in the 51–99% range, Microsoft advises checking for updates again or running the Windows Update troubleshooter. Its guidance is to retry or run the troubleshooter if the installation remains at the same percentage.

If the percentage is still changing, the update may simply be taking longer because of its size or the connection. If the same number remains unchanged and Windows is responsive, continue with the built-in troubleshooting sequence below. See Microsoft’s percentage-specific update guidance.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Microsoft recommends the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help for Windows 11. The general troubleshooter instructions say to run it from Settings, restart when it finishes, and check Windows Update again. The Settings path differs by Windows version:

  • Windows 11: Open Settings, go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run next to Windows Update. Microsoft also points Windows 11 users to the automated troubleshooter in Get Help.
  • Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.

When troubleshooting completes, restart if prompted, then return to Windows Update and check for updates. Microsoft’s instructions are in How to run troubleshooters in Get Help. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the steps above describe its troubleshooting path, not a claim that it continues to receive support.

Check whether an upgrade needs more storage

Microsoft’s upgrade guidance specifies at least 16 GB of free space for an upgrade on a 32-bit operating system and 20 GB for an upgrade on a 64-bit operating system. These are upgrade figures, not a universal free-space requirement for every monthly update. For a device with a small hard drive, Microsoft says a USB drive may be inserted during the upgrade process. Extra storage is relevant only when space is the constraint; it is not a general fix for a stuck percentage.

Use the error code to choose the next step

If Windows displays an error code, use Microsoft’s error-code guidance to identify the relevant branch instead of trying unrelated fixes. Examples listed in its troubleshooting guide include:

When to try DISM and System File Checker

If the symptoms or troubleshooting results point to damaged or missing Windows system files, Microsoft documents the built-in Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool and System File Checker (SFC). These tools target system-file problems; they are not a guaranteed fix for every update stall.

Follow Microsoft’s instructions in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. Note that DISM may use Windows Update to obtain the files it needs. If Windows Update cannot provide them, DISM may not be able to complete using that source.

Before deeper repair, protect your files

Back up important personal files before trying deeper update repairs. If the built-in troubleshooter, connection and storage checks, and the error-specific guidance do not resolve the problem, use Microsoft’s version-specific troubleshooting and upgrade-error instructions. Avoid treating third-party driver-updater or PC-cleaner software as a substitute for Windows’ built-in repair workflow.
