To run compatible memory at its supported XMP or EXPO speed, enable the profile stored on the RAM in your Gigabyte BIOS, then save and restart. The setting name and menu location vary by motherboard and BIOS version, and a profile’s advertised speed is not guaranteed on every CPU, board, and memory combination.
Before changing the setting
Check the exact motherboard model and revision, processor, and memory kit. Gigabyte’s support page provides model-specific manuals and memory support information; use the manual for your board because BIOS menus and recovery instructions differ. Gigabyte’s AM5 feature page says supported boards can detect both AMD EXPO and Intel XMP profile formats, but support depends on the memory module and board model: EXPO and XMP support.

Enable an XMP or EXPO profile
- Restart the computer and enter BIOS using the startup prompt or the key specified in your motherboard manual.
- If BIOS opens in a simplified view, switch to its advanced interface if one is available.
- Open the memory or overclocking settings. Depending on the board generation, look for XMP/EXPO Profile, Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.), Advanced Memory Settings, or System Memory Multiplier. Gigabyte manuals use different labels across generations.
- Select an available profile for your installed memory kit. Gigabyte’s AMD 800-series BIOS manual describes XMP/EXPO Profile as a control that lets BIOS read profile data from supported memory modules; the option appears only when a suitable module is installed. See the AMD 800-series BIOS manual.
- Use the board’s save-and-exit command, as described in its manual, and let the system restart.
- After startup, check the reported memory speed in BIOS or your operating system to confirm the change took effect.
If you cannot find a profile
First confirm that the installed memory exposes an XMP or EXPO profile and that your board supports the module. Gigabyte’s manuals show profile controls are conditional on compatible memory, and its AM5 page qualifies detection by both module and product model. Check the motherboard manual and memory support list before trying manual tuning.
Gigabyte BIOS manuals also document manual controls such as System Memory Multiplier. These are not a universal substitute for a profile: the appropriate multiplier and any timing or voltage changes depend on the specific memory, processor, and board. Use manual settings only with model-specific guidance and an understanding that an unsuitable setting may make the system unstable or prevent it from booting.

Profile or manual tuning?
| Approach | What it does | When to use it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| XMP or EXPO profile | Loads supported settings stored on the memory module. | As the first choice when BIOS detects a profile for the installed kit. | Availability and operation at the profile speed depend on the memory, motherboard, and processor combination. |
| Manual multiplier or timing changes | Lets you set memory parameters individually. | Only when you have checked the exact board’s documentation and need to configure settings manually. | More hardware-specific; incorrect changes can cause instability or a boot failure. |
Older Gigabyte manuals may use the X.M.P. and System Memory Multiplier wording, while newer AMD BIOS documentation uses XMP/EXPO terminology. For examples of older labels, consult the Z370M AORUS GAMING manual. The Intel 700-series BIOS manual also warns that memory timing changes can destabilize the system or prevent booting: Intel 700-series BIOS manual.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the computer becomes unstable or will not boot
Restore optimized or default BIOS settings, or clear CMOS using the procedure for your exact motherboard. Gigabyte’s Intel 700-series manual identifies these as recovery options after problematic memory changes. Follow the board manual for the correct steps; do not assume the recovery procedure is identical across Gigabyte models.
