How to Set Permissions for AI Agents Connected to Smart-Home Devices

Limit an AI agent to the smart-home devices and actions its task needs. Enforce permissions outside the model, add safeguards for sensitive controls, and review platform access separately.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give an AI agent access only to the devices and actions it needs, and enforce that limit in the integration, tool server, API gateway, or policy service—not in the model’s prompt. Keep status checks separate from device control, require added authorization for sensitive actions, and review the smart-home platform’s own app and household-member permissions as a separate layer.

Where to enforce an AI agent’s permissions

A prompt can tell an agent not to unlock a door or change a setting, but it is not a reliable authorization boundary. OWASP advises against implementing authorization in generative-AI instructions because they can be manipulated or ignored. Enforce policy in the system that executes each tool call, and reject requests that fall outside the grant even if the model asks for them. See the OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet and the OWASP AI Security and Privacy Guide.

For each request, the enforcement layer should check who initiated it, which agent is acting, what operation it requested, which device is the target, and whether the current task grant permits that combination. Use deny-by-default rules: anything not explicitly authorized should fail.

Set a narrow grant for the agent’s job

List the devices and actions it actually needs

Start with the task, not the list of everything connected to the home. A status-answering assistant may need only read access to selected device states. A scheduled-lighting assistant may need permission to control specific lights during a defined task, not access to every device in the home. These are design examples; exact controls depend on the integration.

Separate reading from changing devices

Expose read-only status and write/control functions as distinct permissions. Prefer purpose-specific tools such as read_temperature and set_thermostat_target over one broad “control home” tool. Allowlist device identifiers and operation names, validate the arguments, and verify that the target belongs to the home and user covered by the grant. OWASP recommends giving agents only the tools required for their task and using narrow, per-operation permissions.

Keep administrative powers out of ordinary tasks

Do not expose unrestricted device control, account management, or home administration by default. Bind access to the person, agent, task, tool, and target device. Where supported, use short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials and revoke them when the task or integration ends. OWASP’s guidance on agent security calls for minimal-scoped, short-lived signed tokens and separation between policy decisions and agent execution.

Add approval for high-impact actions

Locks, cameras, alarms, and access-management settings can affect physical safety or privacy. Make these tools unavailable unless the use case requires them; if they are needed, put an approval or confirmation check in the execution path. This is a risk-based safeguard, not a claim that every platform requires confirmation for every command. OWASP recommends explicit authorization for sensitive operations. Google describes locks as sensitive devices with additional requirements for third-party apps requesting access.

Apply the same step-up logic when a task expands its scope, switches from reading to writing, or moves to a more sensitive device or action class. A grant to report a thermostat reading should not silently become permission to change the target temperature.

Review the smart-home platform’s separate access controls

The agent’s tool policy and the connected home platform’s app or member permissions are different layers. A platform may offer broad linked-app or household-member controls rather than per-agent, per-command rules. Do not assume that changing one layer narrows the other.

Google Home linked-app access

Google Home lets a home Manager grant or revoke a linked third-party app’s access to home data, members, and selected device types. Review whether the app’s requested device types fit its purpose: Google gives lock access as a potentially reasonable request for a vacation-rental app, but not for a movie-streaming app. Google also says sensitive devices such as locks have additional certification requirements for third-party access. See Google’s guide to third-party apps and services in Google Home.

Google Home household members

Google distinguishes Admins from Members. Admins can manage members and home settings. For Members, Settings access covers device controls and settings as well as home-wide settings; Activity access covers device and home activity history. Give Admin status only to trusted co-managers, and leave Settings or Activity access off for a Member who does not need it. See Google’s guide to managing people and permissions in a home.

Unlink an unused Google Home service

  1. Open the Google Home app and choose Add → Link app or service → Works with Google.
  2. Select the linked service, then choose Unlink account.
  3. Confirm the action only if you intend to remove that service’s connection: Google says this flow removes all devices from the service, not just one selected device.

Google’s documented steps are at its linked-services help page. App labels can change, so check the current wording in Google Home. Do not assume this menu or its all-devices unlink behavior applies to Alexa, Apple Home, Home Assistant, or another platform.

Include people and physical access in the threat model

API scopes are not the whole story. Google warns that a guest with physical access may be able to interact with devices—for example, adjust a thermostat, view video on a display, or use microphone and camera buttons. Consider who is a household member, what their app permissions allow, and who can reach the devices in person. See Google’s household-member guidance.

Use network isolation as defense in depth

A VLAN or firewall rule can limit what smart-home devices communicate with on the network, reducing exposure if a device is compromised. It does not decide whether a particular AI agent may issue a particular device command, so it cannot replace authorization in the tool or API layer. NIST’s SP 1800-15, published May 26, 2021, describes Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) as a way to restrict IoT network communications to what a device needs for its intended function. Actual support for VLANs, MUD, and firewall controls varies by router and device.

Check a permission design before enabling it

  • Scope: Does the grant name the needed devices and operations, or does it cover the whole home?
  • Enforcement: Does a tool server, API, gateway, or policy service check every call, or are limits only written in a prompt?
  • Identity: Is the grant tied to the initiating user, agent, and task, or shared as a persistent integration credential?
  • Sensitive actions: Are locks, cameras, alarms, and security settings unavailable unless needed, with added authorization where appropriate?
  • Review and revocation: Can you see decisions, audit effective permissions, and revoke access when the task or integration ends?
  • Network containment: Can you isolate IoT traffic as an additional safeguard without treating it as command authorization?
