To restrict access, set your child’s family-account game-content limit below that rating, or use a title-specific block where available. Ratings vary by region, so check the rating shown for your location before choosing an age level.
The ESRB listing includes blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol; it also notes in-game purchases. See ESRB’s GTA VI rating. PlayStation’s US product page has said the game’s rating was unconfirmed, so treat the ESRB entry as the US ESRB assignment, not a universal or platform-store rating: PlayStation’s US GTA VI page.

How to block GTA 6 on a child’s PS5
Use a child account in your PlayStation family so a family manager can set controls for that child. The PS5 provides age-based game restrictions, and PlayStation also supports game exceptions; the exact options can depend on the account and current platform controls.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child’s account, then open Parental Controls.
- Choose a restriction level or customize the level for PS5 games. To block a game rated M in the US, set the permitted game age level below Mature.
- For a specific game rather than a broad age limit, check the current game rating and the console’s available exception settings. PlayStation support describes game exceptions, but do not assume every account offers the same override behavior.
You can also manage the child’s settings in the PlayStation Family app: select the child, open settings and Parental Controls, then choose the restriction level and PS5 game age level. The ESRB outlines both routes in its PS5 parental-controls guide; PlayStation’s support instructions are at PlayStation parental controls.

How to block GTA 6 on Xbox
Make sure the child is managed as a family member. Xbox family controls offer age-based content filtering through the Xbox Family Settings app or the console, and the app can also allow or block an individual title.
- In the Xbox Family Settings app, select the child under Your Family, then open Content Restrictions.
- Turn on Filter Inappropriate Content, choose Allow Content Suitable for Age, and confirm the child’s age. An age limit below the local rating should restrict access when the filter applies.
- For a title-specific decision, use the app’s option to allow or block that game. The ESRB guide says children need parental confirmation for individually restricted games.
- On the console, open Settings > Privacy and online safety, select the family member, and adjust Content restrictions. Menu labels may vary by software version.
These routes are documented in the ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls guide. ESRB says Xbox restrictions apply to Xbox One and later consoles and Windows 10 devices; do not assume the same cross-device coverage for PlayStation.

Age rating or one-game approval: which should you use?
| Approach | What it does | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Age-based game restriction | Limits games according to the child’s permitted age level. | Useful when you want a general rule for games, not just GTA VI. |
| Title-specific block or exception | Applies a decision to an individual game where the platform provides that control. | Useful when the child’s general age setting is acceptable but you want a different rule for one title. Availability and behavior depend on platform settings and account. |
On Xbox, the ESRB guide explicitly documents title-level allow/block controls in the family app. PlayStation support describes exceptions for games; check the current console or app options rather than assuming a particular override flow. For either platform, use the game’s local rating when making the decision.

Set communication, playtime, and spending rules separately
A game-age filter is not a complete family policy. Review the separate controls that match your household’s rules:

- Communication and user-generated content: Decide whether the child may communicate with other players or view and share user-created material.
- Playtime: Set limits or schedules independently of which games are permitted.
- Spending: Review purchase permissions and spending limits. The ESRB entry notes in-game purchases for GTA VI.
Both PlayStation and Xbox provide family-control categories beyond age-based game access. See the ESRB’s overview of parental-control tools for the broader categories.

The M (Mature 17+) assignment above is the US ESRB rating. Ratings are regional, and PlayStation’s US product page has listed GTA VI’s rating as unconfirmed while the ESRB has a specific US entry. Outside the US, check the local rating shown by the game’s store or rating authority; do not apply the ESRB age label as though it were a PEGI or other regional classification.
