Google AI Overviews put a generated summary above or among Search results for some queries; traditional results foreground links to web pages. The Overview can help you get oriented on a complex question, but it can make mistakes. For a link-focused view, choose Google’s Web filter. When accuracy matters, open and compare the sources rather than relying on the summary alone.
What is the difference between AI Overviews and regular Google results?
An AI Overview is a generated answer embedded in a Google Search results page. It synthesizes information and presents links intended to help you explore further. It appears for some searches, not every query.

Traditional results put web pages front and center: you scan titles and snippets, open relevant pages, and combine what you learn. Search pages can also include other features, such as local business information or weather, so “traditional results” does not necessarily mean a page containing only blue links. Google describes the Web filter specifically as a text-based link view without features such as AI Overviews.

How do AI Overviews show their sources?
Overviews include links to supporting web content, but a citation is a route to a source, not proof that every sentence in the summary is correct or fully supported. Google said in May 2026 that AI responses may include contextual inline links, article suggestions, subscription labels, previews of public discussions and firsthand perspectives, and desktop hover previews. To check a consequential claim, open the linked page and find the relevant passage. Then compare it with another credible source, preferably a primary source when one is available. If an Overview seems to have misunderstood an ambiguous question, try a more precise search or inspect ordinary results too.
Are AI Overviews accurate?
They can be useful, but they are not a guaranteed answer. Google Search Help warns that “AI Overviews can and will make mistakes,” and says information may be inaccurate or offensive. Google’s July 2024 explanation says the feature uses generative AI and a customized Gemini model alongside Search quality and ranking systems and the Knowledge Graph. Google describes it as designed to identify relevant web results that corroborate the generated overview and to help with complex questions drawing on multiple sources. In a May 2024 post, Google also described possible failure modes: the system may misinterpret a query, miss language nuance, or lack good information; unusual searches can surface satirical or misleading material that appears relevant. Google said it had made improvements to address such cases. Its post also reported company testing that found accuracy on par with featured snippets and higher user satisfaction and higher-quality clicks, including more time spent on destination pages. Those are company-reported test claims, not a guarantee for every query or a substitute for checking a particular answer. See Google’s May 2024 update on AI Overviews.
- For everyday orientation, use the summary to identify terms, angles, or sources worth exploring.
- For health, legal, financial, safety, disputed, unusual, or time-sensitive questions, verify the details against authoritative and current sources before acting.
- If the summary and linked pages do not appear to agree, trust the evidence in the original sources over the generated wording.
What does user behavior evidence show about clicks?
A 2026 study by Athena Chapekis, Anna Lieb, Sono Shah, and Aaron Smith analyzed one month of browsing data from a representative panel of 900 U.S. adults. It estimated that about 1% of AI Overview visits included a click to a source cited in the Overview. The study also found an association between Overviews and fewer clicks and more browsing sessions ending. These are observational findings: they describe measured behavior and adjusted associations, not proof that an Overview alone caused people not to click. The result is specific to the study’s U.S. panel and period, not a universal rate for all users or searches. See the 2026 study hosted on arXiv.

Can you turn off AI Overviews or see just links?
Google treats AI Overviews as a core Search feature and says core features cannot be turned off. After searching, select the Web filter to see text-based links without features such as AI Overviews. This is a filtered view within Search, not a separate search product. Google’s help page documents the control: AI Overviews in Google Search Help.
Google also offers a separate AI Mode conversational experience. On supported mobile devices and in supported regions and languages, you may be able to expand an Overview and continue into AI Mode with the original search context carried over. That handoff is optional; AI Mode is distinct from the Overview itself.

Use an Overview as a starting point
For a multi-part question where you need a quick map of the topic, the synthesis may help you see the main ideas before exploring the supporting links. Treat it as an introduction, not the final word.
Use the Web filter when you want pages first
If you prefer to choose sources and build your own answer, select Web after searching. This view emphasizes text-based links instead of features such as AI Overviews.

Verify when a mistake would matter
For claims that are high-stakes, disputed, unusual, or likely to change, check the original sources and compare them with other reliable pages. Neither a fluent summary nor a conventional results list removes the need to judge source quality.
Why Google includes Overviews
Google says Overviews are intended to help with questions that might otherwise require several searches while preserving links for further exploration. The company reported 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews in June 2026; it separately reported more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode.
