To limit a child’s spending or playtime, check both the family settings for the device or store account and the parental controls for the game publisher’s account. They govern different things: for example, Epic’s payment controls do not block a purchase billed through PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or Steam.
Start by identifying the device the child plays on, the account that owns the game, and where each purchase is billed. Then set controls at the relevant layer below. Menu names and availability can vary by console generation and account region.

Which account’s controls do you need?
A child may use one account to sign in to a console, another to access a store, and a publisher account inside a game. A purchase can be billed to the platform store or directly through the publisher. Setting a limit in one place does not necessarily cover transactions handled by another.

- Check the sign-in and game accounts. Find the family account that manages the device or store, and whether the game is linked to a separate publisher account.
- Check the billing route. Look at the store or payment method used for a purchase. Set purchase controls with the account that handles that charge.
- Set the controls in both relevant places. Use family or platform settings for console and store activity; check the publisher’s account settings for game-specific content, communication, and publisher-billed transactions.

How do I set parental controls on Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo describes controls through the console and the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. The exact options and steps depend on whether the child uses a Switch or Switch 2 and on the app version.

- Use the console or app to manage restrictions and playtime, review gameplay history, and allow selected games to ignore restrictions.
- Use the parent or guardian Nintendo Account’s eShop restrictions to limit spending or restrict visibility of content based on age.
- For Fortnite, Nintendo recommends also setting up Epic Games Parental Controls. A Switch-level allowance for the game does not replace controls over age-rated experiences and features within Fortnite.
- On Switch 2, GameChat restrictions have separate app controls.
Check Nintendo’s current instructions for the child’s console generation and account country before choosing settings; features and steps are not identical across generations.
How do I set a spending limit on PlayStation?
PlayStation spending limits are managed through family management and parental controls. Use the current PlayStation family-management settings to manage the child’s access and spending; the exact interface can differ by console. PlayStation’s support guidance includes a PS5 setup, so confirm the instructions match the child’s console.

If you change a setting while the child is playing, PlayStation notes that the change may not take effect until the child signs out and back in.

- Sign in with an organizer account and open Settings > Account > Family settings.
- Choose the child’s account.
- Open Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download.
- Turn on Ask a parent.
Microsoft also says purchase approval requirements can be changed from a PC. In Microsoft Family Safety, an organizer can add money to a child’s Microsoft account for purchases to draw from an allowance, require approval for every purchase, and review spending activity. Microsoft says children need approval for purchases above their age limit or when their account balance is empty.
Set Xbox and connected-device time limits
Microsoft Family Safety lets a parent set app and game limits for connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices using its app or web controls. Set the allowed hours per day and permitted time windows; schedules can differ by day. On Xbox, screen time continues to count while the child remains signed in, even if they are not actively using the console.

What do Epic Games parental controls cover?
Epic’s controls apply to Epic account services, including Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys, and the Epic Games Store. Epic describes options for spending limits, chat restrictions, playtime limits, content filters, and activity reports. Configure them in addition to the platform’s family settings when the child plays through a console.

Epic says an account indicating that its player is under 13 has a $100 daily limit on purchases made using Epic payment. A parent or guardian PIN is required to override purchases above that limit. Epic describes the limit as applying to the daily total of Epic-payment purchases across Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys, and the Epic Games Store.

This is not a cap on all game spending. It excludes purchases billed through PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, or Nintendo, and purchases made with in-game currency such as V-Bucks. Set the relevant platform-store controls separately for those transactions.
Check the random-item setting separately
Epic offers an Allow Paid Random Items setting for spending V-Bucks or V-Buck-purchased content on random-reward items. Epic says availability varies by region, so the setting may not appear for every account.
What about Roblox and other games?
The current setup details in this guide do not establish Roblox’s spending controls, so do not assume it has a particular allowance, approval, or spending-limit feature. Check Roblox’s current official help guidance before changing account settings or relying on a limit.
For another game, identify who bills the purchase and check both the device or store’s family controls and the game publisher’s current account-safety settings. A store approval setting will not necessarily govern purchases billed elsewhere, and a publisher setting may not cover platform-store charges.
