Use the UPI app linked to your bank account, open the controls for the correct account, and choose the action that matches your situation: Set UPI PIN for first-time setup, Change UPI PIN when you know the existing PIN, or Reset UPI PIN when you have forgotten it. Complete only the verification method shown by your bank and app.
A UPI PIN is a private 4–6 digit authorization code. It is not your debit-card PIN, bank MPIN, or app passcode. Never disclose it to a caller, chat agent, merchant, or anyone claiming to be bank support.

The practical difference is whether you already know the code. If you know it and want a replacement, choose Change; if you do not know it, choose Reset and complete the recovery check. Set is for first-time activation. These options all concern the PIN for a selected bank account, so check the account name before continuing—especially if more than one account is linked.
What a UPI PIN is—and what it is not
The UPI PIN authorizes transactions from your linked bank account. NPCI describes it as a 4–6 digit code. A bank-issued MPIN, debit-card ATM PIN, one-time password, phone unlock code, and UPI-app passcode serve different purposes and should not be substituted for one another.
- UPI PIN: authorizes UPI payments and other supported account transactions.
- Debit-card PIN: authenticates card or ATM use; it is not automatically your UPI PIN.
- MPIN: a bank’s separate mobile-banking credential where offered.
- OTP: a one-time verification code sent during an approved registration or recovery flow.
- App passcode or biometric: unlocks the app on your device; it does not replace the UPI PIN at the bank level.
Anyone who asks you to read out a UPI PIN or OTP is asking for a secret that should remain under your control. NPCI’s official guidance states: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.”

The OTP is not your new PIN, and neither credential should be handed to someone else. Only enter requested details into the official app screen or another bank channel you reached independently.
Before you start: prepare a safe setup
- Use the official UPI or bank app installed from your phone’s legitimate app store.
- Make sure the phone number in the app is the same number registered with the bank account.
- Choose the intended bank account if several accounts or banks are linked.
- Keep the linked debit card available if the app asks for its last six digits and expiry date.
- Use a private location. Do not let another person watch the screen or dictate a PIN.
- Install app and operating-system updates, and avoid performing the setup over a public or unknown Wi-Fi network.
You do not need to buy a device, notebook, or other product to create a UPI PIN. Writing the code where another person can find it creates an avoidable security risk.
Before entering card information, verify that you are in the genuine app and that the displayed bank account is the one you intend to use. Do not follow a setup link sent by an unsolicited caller or message. If the app tells you to use a bank-specific process you do not recognize, leave the screen and contact the bank through its official app, website, number printed on your card, or branch.

How to set a UPI PIN for the first time
1. Open the account controls
- Open the UPI app registered with your bank-linked mobile number.
- Go to the area named something like Bank account, My accounts, UPI accounts, or Manage bank account.
- Select the exact bank account for which you want to create the PIN.
- Tap Set UPI PIN or an equivalent first-time setup control.
2. Complete the verification the app actually offers
NPCI’s BHIM instructions describe entering the last six digits and expiry date of the linked debit card, followed by an OTP or other on-screen verification. Banks and apps can implement additional or different checks, so follow the prompts shown for your account rather than a generic online sequence.

- Read the OTP from the bank’s authorized message and enter it only in the active setup screen. Do not disclose it to anyone.
- If the app offers another supported route, such as Aadhaar-based verification, use it only when it appears inside the official flow and you understand what is being requested.
3. Create and confirm the PIN
- Enter a 4–6 digit PIN that is difficult for someone who knows you to guess.
- Do not use a birth year, phone-number fragment, card number, or an obvious sequence.
- Re-enter the same PIN when prompted.
- Wait for the success confirmation before closing the app, then make a small transaction only if you need to verify that the account is working.
Do not read the PIN aloud, save it in an unprotected note, send it in a message, or enter it after following instructions from an unsolicited caller.
How to change a UPI PIN when you know it
1. Find the Change control
- Open the UPI app and enter the bank-account management area.
- Select the relevant account.
- Tap Change UPI PIN. Do not select Reset UPI PIN unless you have forgotten the current code.
2. Verify and replace it
- Enter the current UPI PIN if the app requests it.
- Enter a new 4–6 digit PIN.
- Confirm the new PIN exactly as requested.
- Wait for the confirmation message and close the session if you are finished.
Some banks add device, card, OTP, or other checks. NPCI’s BHIM guidance separates the Change and Reset controls, but it does not make every app’s fields identical. If you cannot complete the change, stop rather than repeatedly guessing.
Changing a known PIN is not the same as asking the app to recover a forgotten one. A Change flow may ask you to prove you know the current PIN; a Reset flow instead uses the recovery verification available for that bank and app. If you are unsure whether you remember the code, do not test random combinations to find out. Use the appropriate recovery option instead.
How to reset a forgotten UPI PIN
Use Reset, not Change
- Open the official UPI app and select the bank account concerned.
- Tap Reset UPI PIN, Forgot UPI PIN, or the equivalent label.
- Follow the displayed authentication route. NPCI’s BHIM flow shows debit-card details and an OTP for this process.
- Create and confirm a new PIN only after the app confirms that verification succeeded.
Understand optional authentication methods
NPCI’s 7 October 2025 circular describes UIDAI face authentication as an optional method for setting or resetting a UPI PIN in place of card credentials or Aadhaar OTP. It is not universal. The bank and app must implement it, and the device and security conditions must pass their validation checks. If you do not see face authentication, that does not mean your account is defective; use the route provided by your bank.
Do not assume that a method available in one app, bank, or account will appear in another. The circular describes an additional option, not a requirement for every provider. If an app offers face authentication, the method should appear as part of its own official setup or reset flow; do not install an unfamiliar app or share a face-authentication or OTP code because a caller claims it is necessary.

When reset verification fails
- Check that you selected the correct account and that its mobile number and card details are current.
- Confirm that the OTP is the newest one and has not expired.
- Do not keep retrying guessed information or ask a stranger to “unlock” the account.
- Contact the bank through its verified app, official website, number printed on the card, or a branch.
Bank staff should not ask for your UPI PIN. They may guide you through an official process, but you must enter credentials yourself in the genuine app or bank channel.
What to do if you enter the wrong PIN
Several incorrect attempts can cause the bank to temporarily block sending money through UPI. The threshold, waiting period, and exact behavior vary by bank. Do not keep trying combinations. If you know the PIN, wait for the bank’s stated recovery period or use the supported change route; if you have forgotten it, use Reset UPI PIN.
A failed payment does not justify giving your PIN to someone who promises to reverse it. A legitimate support representative can investigate a transaction without receiving your secret code.

If you are temporarily blocked, the exact duration and next step are bank-specific. Follow the message in the official app or ask the bank through a verified channel. Repeated attempts are not a shortcut: they may prolong the problem or trigger further restrictions. Do not share your PIN with anyone who says they can clear the block immediately.
UPI PIN scams to avoid
A QR code cannot “collect” money for you
NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance says scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is for making a payment, not receiving money. A supposed refund, prize, salary, cashback, or incoming transfer should not require you to scan an unsolicited QR code and authorize it with your PIN.
- To receive money, provide the appropriate UPI ID or account details through a trusted process; do not approve an unexpected payment request.
- Read the amount and recipient shown on the confirmation screen before authorizing any payment.
- Reject collect requests you do not recognize.
- Never install remote-control software because a caller says it is needed to issue a refund.
Pause before approving a request that arrived unexpectedly, even if the person says it is a refund or a payment someone owes you. A QR scan followed by PIN entry authorizes a payment. If the screen shows a recipient or amount you did not intend, cancel rather than proceeding.

Impersonated support
Fraudsters may claim to be from a bank, payment app, courier company, or government service. They may say a transaction failed, a card must be “verified,” or a PIN is needed to reverse a payment. End the conversation and contact the institution using a verified channel. Your PIN and OTP remain private even when the caller knows your name or recent transaction details.
What if your phone is lost or another person uses it?
If the phone or SIM associated with UPI is lost, act promptly. NPCI advises blocking the mobile number and contacting the bank. Ask the carrier to suspend or replace the SIM, secure the device through its operating-system tools, and review recent bank transactions from a trusted device or branch.
A UPI PIN is required to authorize UPI transactions, but a lost phone still creates risk through SIM access, unlocked sessions, notification exposure, or social engineering. Change relevant passwords, revoke access where the bank provides that control, and report suspicious activity immediately.
If another person has had access to your phone, secure the device and account promptly rather than relying on the PIN alone. Contact the bank using a verified route if you see a transaction you do not recognize or cannot secure the linked account. Do not let someone who found the phone guide you through a “recovery” call or ask you to reveal a PIN or OTP.
When the expected option is missing
- No bank account appears: confirm that the app’s mobile number matches the bank’s records and that SMS permissions and network service are working.
- Set PIN is unavailable: the account may already have a PIN, may not be eligible for that app, or may require the bank’s own app.
- Change is missing: look under the selected account’s manage or security controls, not only the app’s payment screen.
- Reset is unavailable: the bank may require debit-card details, branch assistance, or another supported verification method.
- Card details are rejected: recheck the last six digits and expiry date, ensure the card belongs to the selected account, and stop after reasonable attempts.
- OTP does not arrive: verify mobile service, wait for the newest message, and never use an OTP forwarded by another person.
- Face authentication is absent: it is optional and implementation-dependent, not a feature every account must provide.
If the app repeatedly fails after you have checked the account and network, use the bank’s official support route. Do not move the conversation to an unverified number or social-media account.
When a menu label differs from the examples in this guide, look for the selected account’s bank-account or account-management controls. A missing option may reflect the bank’s implementation or the account’s eligibility, not a need to install a third-party tool. Confirm the next step directly with the bank rather than trusting search results, unsolicited links, or a number sent to you by a stranger.

How to set a UPI PIN with the bank directly
Some banks support PIN setup or recovery in their own mobile application, internet-banking flow, or branch-assisted process. The eligibility and menu names are bank-specific. Start from the bank’s official app or the phone number printed on your card, ask which channel supports UPI PIN setup, and complete verification yourself. The same privacy rules apply: staff should not receive your PIN or OTP.
NPCI’s BHIM instructions document the card-detail route for BHIM, but that does not mean every bank handles setup or reset identically. If you want to use the bank directly, ask which official channel supports the exact task—first-time setup, a known-PIN change, or forgotten-PIN reset. Do not mistake general bank support for permission to disclose credentials; the bank can explain the steps while you enter them privately.
Questions to check before authorizing a transaction
- Is this payment one I intentionally started?
- Does the recipient name and amount match what I expect?
- Did I reach this screen from the official app rather than an unsolicited link, call, or QR code?
- Am I being asked to enter a PIN to receive money? If so, stop—the request is a warning sign.
Secure PIN habits after setup
- Use a PIN that is not reused for your phone, cards, or other accounts.
- Shield the screen at ATMs, shops, and public places.
- Change the PIN through the app if you suspect someone saw it.
- Keep app notifications and device lock protection enabled.
- Review bank alerts and report unauthorized transactions through the bank immediately.
The safest workflow is simple: select the correct account, choose Set, Change, or Reset based on your situation, complete only the verification offered inside the official app, and keep the resulting PIN to yourself.

Official guidance
NPCI’s UPI Frequently Asked Questions describe the 4–6 digit PIN, privacy rules, wrong-entry consequences, and lost-phone guidance. NPCI’s BHIM UPI guidelines, updated 4 June 2026, show separate Change and Reset controls and a card-details-and-OTP reset route. NPCI’s circular dated 7 October 2025 describes optional UIDAI face authentication subject to implementation and validation. NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance explains that QR scans and PIN entry are for making payments, not receiving them. App wording and account eligibility can still differ by provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I forget my PIN?
Select the affected bank account in the official UPI app and choose Reset UPI PIN or the equivalent forgot-PIN option. Follow the verification route the app offers; NPCI’s BHIM flow shows debit-card details and an OTP. Optional methods such as UIDAI face authentication are not available in every app or account. If verification fails, stop retrying and contact the bank through a verified channel.
How do I set my UPI-PIN with the bank directly?
Some banks support setup or recovery in their own app, internet-banking flow, or at a branch. The route depends on the bank. Start from its official app, website, the number printed on your card, or a branch, and ask which channel supports your task. Enter credentials yourself; do not tell staff or callers your PIN or OTP.
What happens if I enter the wrong UPI-PIN during a transaction?
Several wrong attempts may temporarily block sending money through UPI. The attempt threshold and block behavior vary by bank. Do not keep guessing: follow the bank’s instructions, use Change if you still know the PIN, or Reset if you have forgotten it.
In case my mobile is used by another person, will there be any security breach?
The UPI PIN is required to authorize UPI transactions, but someone with access to your phone or SIM may still create risk through an unlocked session, notifications, or social engineering. Secure the device, contact the bank promptly if the phone or SIM is lost or you see suspicious activity, and block the mobile number when appropriate. Never disclose your PIN or OTP.
The Bottom Line
Use Set for first-time setup, Change when you know the current PIN, and Reset when you have forgotten it. Select the right bank account, follow only the verification route shown by its official app or bank, and keep your PIN and OTP private. A QR code and PIN authorize a payment—they are not a way to collect money.
